The Secrets of Vagus Nerve Stimulation Book Review:

Are you aware there is an essential nerve in your body called the vagus nerve, which has a significant impact on your overall health? Are you willing to improve your health and overall wellbeing once and for all? Do you want to know how to activate the power of your vagus nerve? If so, then read on… The vagus nerve is not only the longest but also the most important nerve that runs in your body. It carries vital signals to and from your brain, heart, lungs, digestive system, and other major organs in your body. Should any damage be done to this nerve by your poor, unhealthy lifestyle, uncontrolled daily stress, or injury, you stand a high risk of being plagued by chronic inflammation, anxiety, depression, PTSD, digestive problems, heart diseases, and more. To give you a perspective, the World Health Organization in 2019 reported that about 263 million people globally suffer from depression, and this number is on the increase. In the US alone, the National Institute of Mental Health in its last report estimated that 17.3 million adults (7.1% of all US adults) had at least a major depressive episode, not to mention it costs the US billions of dollars annually to treat people with epilepsy, which is reported to have affected 1.3 million people in the US, according to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Now more than ever, it has become increasingly important to take back your mental wellbeing and overall health through conscious efforts in stimulating the vagus nerve. Vagus nerve stimulation has shown tremendous science-backed results in helping people who suffer from PTSD, anxiety, etc. and other conditions such as inflammation, among others. And more interestingly, these results can be achieved by applying certain natural exercises and practices that are completely inexpensive but yet proven to be highly effective. Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy in a Developing Country A Long Term Follow Up Study and Cost Utility Analysis Book Review:

Highlights: VNS therapy is feasible and effective for children with refractory epilepsy in developing countries. Cost effectiveness analyses from developed countries cannot be applied to developing countries. Successful VNS therapy does reduce the financial burden of the device, however direct cost savings are difficult to achieve. There is acceptable QALY gain with VNS therapy in developing countries, with encouraging cost per QALY. Appropriate instruments for deducing utility values for children with epilepsy are needed. Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate clinical outcomes, quality-adjusted life years (QALY), cost effectiveness and cost utility associated with VNS therapy in children with refractory epilepsy in a developing country. Methods: Retrospective review of all children who underwent VNS implantation at King Abdullah University Hospital and Jordan University Hospital in Jordan. Results: Twenty eight patients (16 males) had implantation of the VNS therapy system between the years 2007 and 2011. Mean age at implantation was 9.4 years. Mean duration of epilepsy prior to implantation was 6.5 years. The most common seizure type was generalized tonic clonic seizures. Fifteen patients showed a 50% or more reduction in seizure frequency. There was a significant reduction in total number of seizures ( p = 0.002) and emergency room (ER) visits ( p = 0.042) after VNS therapy. Atonic seizures were more likely to respond than generalized tonic clonic seizures, p = 0.034. Direct hospital costs prior to VNS implantation were analyzed in relation to ER visits and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. Cost savings per patient did reduce the financial burden of the device by about 30%. There was a QALY gain per lifetime of 3.78 years for children and 1 year for adolescents. Conclusion: Response to VNS implantation in Jordan was favorable and similar to what has been previously reported. QALY gain and cost per QALY analysis were encouraging. Cost savings were related to reduction in seizure severity. In circumstances of limited resources as in developing countries, targeting patients with frequent utilization of health services would improve cost effectiveness.

Cardiac based Vagus Nerve Stimulation Reduced Seizure Duration in a Patient with Refractory Epilepsy Book Review:

Highlights: The Aspire VNS-device was implanted in a patient with refractory epilepsy. The effects of heart rate-triggered VNS-pulses on seizure duration were evaluated. The novel VNS-device detected seizures with high sensitivity but low specificity. Responsive VNS-stimulation significantly reduced seizure duration. Abstract: Purpose: A novel vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) device was recently approved in Europe which rapidly detects increases in heart rates (HR) and applies an additional stimulus if HR-increases exceed a given threshold. The effects of HR-triggered VNS-pulses on seizures were not reported yet under controlled conditions. Here, we quantified the effects of HR-triggered VNS-pulses on the seizure duration in one patient. Methods: The novel VNS device was implanted in a 29-year old man with refractory epilepsy. After implantation, the patient underwent video-EEG telemetry for 68 h with no changes in anticonvulsant drugs. On the first day the patient only received sham-stimulation. During the following 46 h HR-related VNS-stimulation was set to 2 mA. Seizure duration was determined based on clinical signs. Results: Twelve stereotypical seizures were recorded (six during sham- and six during the active stimulation). The VNS device recognised a total of 139 events as a seizure and correctly identified 11 seizures. The HR-triggered VNS-stimulation significantly reduced the total seizure duration from 33.2 ± 4.8 s to 26.5 ± 5 s and the remaining seizure duration after the onset of the extra-stimulation from 27.8 ± 4.3 s to 16.2 ± 3.2 s. With the given configuration in this patient, sensitivity and specificity of HR-based seizure-detection amounted to 92% and 13.5%, respectively. Conclusions: This case illustrates that VNS-stimulation in response to seizure-related HR-increases is able to significantly reduce seizure duration. Despite the limitations of our case, its promising results should prompt larger studies to confirm the clinical benefit of this novel device.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Anxiety Book Review:

In 1997, Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) therapy (Cyberonics, Houston, Texas) was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of epilepsy refractory to antiepileptic medications. In 2005, VNS received FDA approval for treatment-resistant depression refractory to antidepressants, and Cyberonics recently received FDA approval for the clinical study of VNS for rapid cycling bipolar depression. Many researchers continue to investigate the anxiolytic effects of VNS in human and non-human animal models. The author presents a study of VNS effects on anxiety and the capacity of atropine methyl nitrate to attenuate these effects. The results indicate that VNS decreases anxiety in the laboratory animals tested. These findings provide evidence to support the testing and subsequent use of VNS therapy for the treatment of clinical anxiety in humans. Because many therapies that are effective in the treatment of depression effectively treat anxiety, VNS therapy should be effective and approvable for clinical anxiety. This book can serve as a research tool, training mechanism, or surgical guide to the implantation of the vagus nerve stimulating electrode in the laboratory rat. Hopefully, this resource provides information that facilitates FDA approval of VNS for treatment-resistant anxiety, a chronic, devastating and often debilitating illness.

Are you experiencing severe forms of anxiety, stress, depression, or other forms of conditions such as chronic inflammation? Do you know there is an essential nerve in your body called the vagus nerve that can significantly alter these conditions for the better? Do you want to know how to activate your vagus nerve to improve your overall health and wellbeing once and for all? If so, then this book is for you. Many attempts have been made to understand what facilitates the transmission of information between the brain and the organs of the body. As advances in technology and medicine took place, it has now been discovered what role the tenth cranial nerve called the vagus nerve plays in the human body as regards this. The vagus nerve, a nerve most people have not heard of, is the most complex and extending nerve system in the human body with connections to virtually almost all areas of the body. It controls and facilitates some of the essential processes our body undergoes, such as moderating heart rate and blood pressure, formulation of antibodies and equipping the immune system to fight against infections and diseases, and extends its roles to include aiding digestive processes, among many others. This nerve, which also controls the release of antidepressants and hormones, explains why it impacts virtually every emotional and physiological event we experience, and this includes stress, anxiety, and depression. Should any damage be done to this critical nerve, the consequences can be far too alarming to grasp. Hence, the importance that this nerve is adequately tendered and stimulated for optimal functioning. The Danger Within Us Book Review:

Did you know... Medical interventions have become the third leading cause of death in America. An estimated 10 percent of Americans are implanted with medical devices -- like pacemakers, artificial hips, cardiac stents, etc. The overwhelming majority of high-risk implanted devices have never undergone a single clinical trial. In The Danger Within Us, award-winning journalist Jeanne Lenzer brings these horrifying statistics to life through the story of one working class man who, after his "cure" nearly kills him, ends up in a battle for justice against the medical establishment. His crusade leads Lenzer on a journey through the dark underbelly of the medical device industry, a fascinating and disturbing world that hasn't been written about before. What Lenzer exposes will shock readers: rampant corruption, elaborate cover-ups, shameless profiteering, and astonishing lack of oversight, all of which leads to dangerous devices (from artificial hips to pacemakers) going to market and into our bodies. In the vein of America's Bitter Pill and A Civil Action, The Danger Within Us is a stirring call for reform and a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of American healthcare. Modulation of Heart Rate by Temporally Patterned Vagus Nerve Stimulation in the Anesthetized Dog Book Review:

Abstract: Despite current knowledge of the myriad physiological effects of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in various mammalian species (including humans), the impact of varying stimulation parameters on nerve recruitment and physiological responses is not well understood. We investigated nerve recruitment, cardiovascular responses, and skeletal muscle responses to different temporal patterns of VNS across 39 combinations of stimulation amplitude, frequency, and number of pulses per burst. Anesthetized dogs were implanted with stimulating and recording cuff electrodes around the cervical vagus nerve, whereas laryngeal electromyogram (EMG) and heart rate were recorded. In seven of eight dogs, VNS‐evoked bradycardia (defined as ≥10% decrease in heart rate) was achieved by applying stimuli at amplitudes equal to or greater than the threshold for activating slow B‐fibers. Temporally patterned VNS (minimum 5 pulses per burst) was sufficient to elicit bradycardia while reducing the concomitant activation of laryngeal muscles by more than 50%. Temporal patterns of VNS can be used to modulate heart rate while minimizing laryngeal motor fiber activation, and this is a novel approach to reduce the side effects produced by VNS. Abstract : Vagus nerve stimulation‐evoked bradycardia has been identified as an important biomarker for effective treatment of heart failure. We have shown in this preclinical study that very brief bursts of electrical pulses applied at the threshold for recruiting slow B‐fibers can effectively reduce heart rate while minimizing the activation of laryngeal muscles. We predict this novel pattern of nerve stimulation will improve the therapeutic efficacy of vagus nerve stimulation in heart failure patients.

Effects of Sub perceptual Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Brain Activity Measured Intra cranially in Humans Book Review:

The general state of the human organism is modulated by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) comprised of two balancing influences: sympathetic and parasympathetic. The basal forebrain (BF) cholinergic and the locus coeruleus (LC) noradrenergic system within the brain innervates the cerebral cortex and regulates cognitive functions such as arousal, attention, learning, and sleep. The peripheral autonomic nervous system is linked with the cortical projection systems and modulates cortical activity levels in the human brain, which has been shown in various studies of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) effect on cognitive functions, but its mechanism still remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to determine if sub-perception stimulation on the auricular branch of the vagus nerve will produce mild event-related cortical modulation. Our study provided a detailed view of local neuron population activity through depth electrodes implanted in 5 epileptic subjects, and analyzed the acute effect of VNS on intracranial EEG in post-stimulation period versus baseline in the time and frequency domains. We have found rare but significant (p

Effect of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Plasma Cytokine Profile Book Review:

A number of brain imaging studies have shown the efficacy of surgically implanted vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for the treatment of depression and epilepsy refractory to medical therapy. Direct vagus nerve stimulation effect on brain neurocircuitry has been cited as one of the mechanisms of action for this therapy. Recent studies have also shown that the normalization of plasma cytokine profile may be an additional therapeutic effects of VNS. VNS has been shown to decrease the amount of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-8 and IFN-gamma) and subsequently reduce the production of C-Reactive Protein. Furthermore, VNS also leads to decreased pain perception. There has been growing interest in the application of vagus nerve stimulation in the treatment of a constellation of medical issues that involve a perturbation of normal plasma cytokine profile. More recently, a phase II clinical trial for subjects with rheumatoid arthritis has shown that there was a significant reduction in pain and a decrease in C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in patients who received a surgically implanted VNS device that provides a maximum of 5 minutes of stimulation daily. Disruptions in the innate immune system have been shown to be one of the mechanisms that put patients at risk for developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Normalization of plasma cytokine profile may be beneficial for patients with PTSD thus VNS can potentially be utilized as a treatment modality for PTSD. For this study, we are particularly interested in determining the effect of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation of plasma cytokine profile as compared to effects from a sham device that only activates skin nociceptors.
