The Veins of the Ocean Book Review:

In this “profound, daring” tale of loss and faith, a woman haunted by tragedy begins to find healing in the waters—and love—that surround her (San Francisco Chronicle). Reina Castillo’s beloved brother has been sentenced to death for an unthinkable crime that shocked the community—and Reina secretly blames herself. Devastated and grieving, Reina moves to a quiet enclave in the Florida Keys seeking anonymity and a new start, and meets Nesto Cadena, a recently exiled Cuban awaiting the arrival of the children he left behind in Havana. Inspired by Nesto’s love of the sea and capacity for faith, Reina comes to understand her own connections to the life-giving and destructive forces of the ocean that surrounds her, as well as its role in her family’s troubled history. Against a vibrant coastal backdrop that ranges from Miami to Cartagena, Colombia, author Patricia Engel delivers a profound and riveting Pan-American story of fractured souls finding solace and redemption in the beauty and power of the natural world—and in one another. “This is a writer who understands that exile can be as much an emotional state as a geographical one, that the agony of leaving tugs against the agony of being left behind. . . . To immerse oneself in Engel’s prose is to surrender to a seductive embrace, a hypnotic beauty that mingles submersion with submission.” —The New York Times Book Review

Fatal Harmony Book Review:

I may be the villain of the story, but at least I get a leading role. Evil is a term thrown around history and literature as if it's something so easily definable. A concept to fight against. Evil doesn’t exist. Neither does ‘good.’ Vampires do, though. I just happen to be one. I’ve cruised through the centuries managing to avoid all the wars, supernatural and human, but still going to all the best parties. I would say I avoided bloodshed, but it’s kind of part of the whole ‘vampire’ thing. I’ve lived on the fringes of a society that considered cruelty and sadism favorable character traits for almost five hundred years. Now I'm in the middle of a war that might just put my nonbeating heart in a lot of danger. Battles, I can handle. The impossible attraction between me and the vampire slayer, not to mention the penetrating gaze of the king of our race, on the other hand? I might not get out undead.

Vein of Love Book Review:

"Darkness isn't one shade, sweetheart." Three centuries ago, Molly Darling's ancestors signed a contract in blood-daemon blood-to protect themselves from harm. On the eve she turns nineteen, Molly leaves for her birthday party against her parent's wishes, sick of their warnings about her "betrothal to a demon." Except that she's very much betrothed, and he's very much a demon-one who's only agreed to the nuptials to use Molly's ancient daemon powers. Brash, arrogant, and built like a Greek god, Tensley Knight keeps showing up to save Molly from otherworldly attacks, only to insult her a moment later. As Molly learns more about the demon world, she realizes two things: that her family's safety depends on a successful marriage, while any chance of freedom she'll ever have calls for Tensley's demise. Yet sometimes Molly spots a tortured soul beyond those liquid grey eyes, and there's no denying the way her skin tingles when Tensley touches it. In Vein of Love, safety requires sacrifice, foe becomes lover, and one must decide whether to kiss...or to kill.

Cold Vein Book Review:

For the last three years [my daughter], has been slowly dying. Although she is sixteen, she weighs as much as an eight-year-old. Her hormone levels are those of a post-menopausal woman. We have tried everything the medical system has to offer - psychologists, psychiatrists, family therapists, dieticians, drugs ... but nothing has worked. And now here we are, she and I, flying to the other side of the world in a last ditch effort to save her. Anorexia is a difficult thing to get people to understand. Usually they will look at me incredulously. Sometimes they will come right out and say what I know they are thinking: Why can't you just get her to eat? Anne Tonner, a high achieving human rights lawyer and mother of four, is used to facing battles and winning. But when her 13-year-old daughter Claire stops eating and is diagnosed with anorexia, she is confronted with the mother of all enemies, one that is completely unfathomable and seemingly incurable. Anne and her family throw everything they have at helping Claire face the 'demon' they name 'Cold Vein'. But some three years later Claire is still ill and desperately close to death and the family is in tatters. Anne is in danger of not only losing her daughter but her whole family as well. In a last ditch effort they travel across the world to attend a clinic in Stockholm, knowing that this may be the only chance Claire has to survive. Beautifully and engagingly written, Anne's depiction of the devastating effects of anorexia has not only for the person who has it, but those around them, is honest, tough and compelling. Ultimately uplifting, this story will shed light on one of the most insidious and dangerous mental conditions.

Vessel Health and Preservation The Right Approach for Vascular Access Book Review:

This Open access book offers updated and revised information on vessel health and preservation (VHP), a model concept first published in poster form in 2008 and in JVA in 2012, which has received a great deal of attention, especially in the US, UK and Australia. The book presents a model and a new way of thinking applied to vascular access and administration of intravenous treatment, and shows how establishing and maintaining a route of access to the bloodstream is essential for patients in acute care today. Until now, little thought has been given to an intentional process to guide selection, insertion and management of vascular access devices (VADs) and by default actions are based on crisis management when a quickly selected VAD fails. The book details how VHP establishes a framework or pathway model for each step of the patient experience, intentionally guiding, improving and eliminating risk when possible. The evidence points to the fact that reducing fragmentation, establishing a pathway, and teaching the process to all stakeholders reduces complications with intravenous therapy, improves efficiency and diminishes cost. As such this book appeals to bedside nurses, physicians and other health professionals.

This book is designed to equip the reader with a detailed knowledge of the pathophysiology of chronic venous disease and an understanding of the clinical benefits of restoring venous drainage by saphenous vein-sparing procedures, including minimization of invasiveness and reduction of the recurrence rate. All of the techniques currently available for vein-sparing strategies, including novel endovenous options, are clearly described and illustrated, with explanation of the role and value of recent technical innovations. The reader is guided through the entire management process, starting from diagnosis and proceeding through evaluation of the individual patient’s needs to the successful implementation of appropriate treatment. In addition, the literature on relevant diagnostic and therapeutic protocols is thoroughly reviewed, covering all significant publications to the present day. The content is kept as simple as possible to help those new to the field. At the same time, the deep insights into theoretical and technical aspects will support even the most advanced specialists in their everyday practice.
