The Taming of the Queen Book Review:

By the #1 New York Times bestselling author, a novel of passion and power at the court of a medieval killer, a riveting new Tudor tale featuring King Henry VIII’s sixth wife Kateryn Parr. Kateryn Parr, a thirty-year-old widow in a secret affair with a new lover, has no choice when a man old enough to be her father who has buried four wives—King Henry VIII—commands her to marry him. Kateryn has no doubt about the danger she faces: the previous queen lasted sixteen months, the one before barely half a year. But Henry adores his new bride and Kateryn’s trust in him grows as she unites the royal family, creates a radical study circle at the heart of the court, and rules the kingdom as Regent. But is this enough to keep her safe? A leader of religious reform and the first woman to publish in English, Kateryn stands out as an independent woman with a mind of her own. But she cannot save the Protestants, under threat for their faith, and Henry’s dangerous gaze turns on her. The traditional churchmen and rivals for power accuse her of heresy—the punishment is death by fire and the king’s name is on the warrant... From the bestselling author who has illuminated all of Henry’s queens comes a deeply intimate portrayal of the last: a woman who longed for passion, power, and education at the court of a medieval killer.

Dark Tides Book Review:

Named a Best Book of the Month by CNN and MSNBC Named a Most Exciting New Book of Fall by PopSugar #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory’s new historical novel tracks the rise of the Tidelands family in London, Venice, and New England. Midsummer Eve 1670. Two unexpected visitors arrive at a shabby warehouse on the south side of the River Thames. The first is a wealthy man hoping to find the lover he deserted twenty-one years before. James Avery has everything to offer, including the favour of the newly restored King Charles II, and he believes that the warehouse's poor owner Alinor has the one thing his money cannot buy—his son and heir. The second visitor is a beautiful widow from Venice in deepest mourning. She claims Alinor as her mother-in-law and has come to tell Alinor that her son Rob has drowned in the dark tides of the Venice lagoon. Alinor writes to her brother Ned, newly arrived in faraway New England and trying to make a life between the worlds of the English newcomers and the American Indians as they move toward inevitable war. Alinor tells him that she knows—without doubt—that her son is alive and the widow is an imposter. Set in the poverty and glamour of Restoration London, in the golden streets of Venice, and on the tensely contested frontier of early America, this is a novel of greed and desire: for love, for wealth, for a child, and for home

Hard Red Spring Book Review:

An ambitious and unforgettable epic novel that spans a hundred years of Guatemala’s tumultuous history as experienced by four American women who are linked by the mysterious disappearance of a little girl In 1902, a young girl watches her family’s life destroyed by corrupt officials and inscrutable natives. In 1954, the wife of the American ambassador becomes trapped in the intrigue of a cold war love affair. In 1983, an evangelical missionary discovers that the Good News may not be good news at all to the Mayan refugees she hopes to save. And in 1999, the mother of an adopted Mayan daughter embarks on a Roots Tour only to find that the history she seeks is not safely in the past. Kelly Kerney’s novel tells a powerful story that draws on the history of Guatemala and the legacy of American intervention to vividly evoke The Land of Eternal Spring in all its promise and all its devastating failures. This is a place where a volcano erupts and the government sends a band to drown out the sound of destruction; where a government decree reverses the direction of one-way streets; a president decides that Pat Robertson and Jesus will save the country; and where a UN commission is needed to determine the truth. A heartrending and masterfully written look at a country in perpetual turmoil, Hard Red Spring brilliantly reveals how the brutal realities of history play out in the lives of individuals and reveals Guatemala in a manner reminiscent of the groundbreaking memoir I, Rigoberta Menchu.

Taming Tess Book Review:

When architect Tess Abbot's house catches on fire during renovation, she blames building contractor Roman St. John for the blaze. A man of his word, Roman honors a boast Tess had goaded him into making, that if the job wasn't done on time she could move into his house. As bad an idea as moving in with a hot, marriage-minded man is, the career-minded, never-going-to-marry Tess stubbornly holds him to his word. But escalating sexual tension and close quarters confound her determination to keep her hands off the one man who could reduce her to the "June Cleaver" status her father has planned for her. But Tess adds spark to Roman's life and he likes it. Now all he has to do to win Tess' love is to tame her...but not too much...in this modern day Taming of the Shrew story.

Cabin Fever Illustrated Book Review:

There is a certain malady of the mind induced by too much of one thing. Just as the body fed too long upon meat becomes a prey to that horrid disease called scurvy, so the mind fed too long upon monotony succumbs to the insidious mental ailment which the West calls cabin fever. True it parades under different names, according to circumstances and caste. You may be afflicted in a palace and call it ennui, and it may drive you to commit peccadilloes and indiscretions of various sorts. You may be attacked in a middle-class apartment house, and call it various names, and it may drive you to cafe life and affinities and alimony.

The Book of Bradley Book Review:

The Book of Bradley is a self-help book for people who don't really need any help but who still like to ask questions. Knowing that helps me out because now I can write whatever pops into my f***ing head. My goal in answering questions was to write something original, lift the skirts of the Muse, get some traction. My unstated goal was to take control of your nervous system using black marks on a white background forcing you to scan your eyes from left to right and on down the page, pausing to enjoy the pictures before turning the page and locking onto the next word and the next and so on until you reach a saturation point where your brain can't function normally, anymore, but has to reconsider its previous limitations, self-imposed or rather imposed outside the bounds of memory by insuperable gods, let's call them that. Now, you have to ask yourself: Do I want to keep reading? What if something happens? I have a lot of years dedicated to building and bolstering my belief system. Someone just lifted the latch on I don't know what and I don't know what's going to happen once that door or portal opens. Holy sh*t. I'd better put this book back and not tell anyone about this. Unless... who are these gods and what have they done to me without my knowledge or consent?Tough questions. Tough questions. I guess there's only one thing to do. I'll let you answer this one. I got the rest.
