The Sermon on the Mount Book Review:

John Wesley wrote this series of sermon commentaries to help people understand Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. It took him over 15 years to complete this important work. Over time changes within the English language caused some of these writings to be very difficult for the average person to read and were really only suited for the most dedicated theologian. through careful and sensitive editing Claire Weakley, Jr. has brought these sermons back to life for every reader in the modern world to be able to enjoy and understand Wesley's insights and teachings regarding the Sermon on the Mount.

Sermon on the Mount Book Review:

Emphasizing the historical distance between the New Testament and our contemporary culture, The Sermon on the Mount by Scot McKnight, part of the new The Story of God Bible Commentary series, offers helpful contextual insights for those seeking to discern how to live out the Bible in today’s world. Perfect for pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and lay people alike, this highly anticipated series provides a clear and compelling exposition of the text in the context of the Bible’s overarching story. The authors move away from “application” language, which has been criticized as being too simplistic, encouraging instead a wider perspective and discussion of how the biblical story can be lived today. Offering a new type of application commentary for today’s context, the Story of God Bible Commentary series explains and illuminates Scripture as God’s Story, with each New Testament text examined as embedded in its canonical and historical setting, in order to foster discernment in living the story faithfully and creatively with and for the Church in the 21st Century.

Professor Davies here discusses the Sermon in five settings: in the setting of how Matthew intended it to be understood; in the setting of Jewish Messianic expectation; in the setting of contemporary Judaism; in the setting of the early church; and in the setting of the ministry of Jesus.

The Sermon on the Mount Book Review:

One of the most influential teachings in Christian history is Matthew 5-7, Jesus's Sermon on the Mount. Many pastors have delved into this passage, but none has offered such a comprehensive, up-to-date, and accessible exposition. Until now. Known for his keen insight and biblical understanding, Dr. R. T. Kendall offers an in-depth, verse-by-verse, and lay-friendly exposition of this matchless sermon. In fact, he gives the most thorough and comprehensive interpretation of this passage to date. His compelling, devotional-style writing brings the words of Jesus to life, and he shows readers how to put these teachings to work in their own lives. An unforgettable book for the lay reader and pastor alike.

The Sermon on the Mount Book Review:

A careful study of the four Gospels reveals the fact that Christ's ministry had, first, a special application to the afflicted people of God; second, it evidently had a peculiar reference to His own immediate disciples; and third, it had a general bearing upon the people at large. Such we take it was also the case with the Sermon on the Mount, embodying and illustrating these three distinctive features of Christ's public ministry. First, its opening section (the "Beatitudes") is most evidently addressed to those who were afflicted in their souls-those deeply exercised before God. Second, its next division referred directly to His public servants, as will be shown (D.V.), when we take it up in detail. Third, its larger part was a most searching exposition of the spirituality of the Law and the refutation of the false teachings of the elders, and was meant mainly for the people at large. We do not think that W. Perkins went too far when he said of the Sermon on the Mount, "It may justly be called the key of the whole Bible, for here Christ opens the sum of the Old and New Testaments." It is the longest discourse of our Lord's recorded in the Scriptures. He began His public ministry by insisting upon repentance (Matthew 4:17), and here He enlarges upon this vitally important subject in a variety of ways, showing us what repentance really is and what are its fruits. It is an intensely practical sermon throughout: as Matthew Henry tersely expressed it, "There is not much of the credenta of Christianity in it-the things to be believed; but it is wholly taken up with the agenda-the things to be done, for 'if any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine' (John 7:17)." Though we are told at the beginning of chapter 5 that it was His "disciples" whom Christ here taught, yet it is equally clear from the closing verses of chapter 7 that this Sermon was spoken in the hearing of the multitudes. This must be steadily borne in mind throughout, for while it contains much instruction for believers in connection with their living a good, honest, and blessed life, yet not a little in it is evidently designed for unbelievers, particularly those sections which contain a most searching setting forth of the spiritual nature of His kingdom and the character of those who enter and enjoy its privileges. Romish teachers have greatly erred, for they insist that Christ here propounded a new Law-far more perfect than the law of Moses-and that He delivered now entirely new counsel to His disciples, which was never given in the Law or the Prophets; whereas His intention was to clear the true meaning of the Law and the Prophets. which had been greatly corrupted by the Jewish doctors. But we will not further anticipate what we shall (D.V.) contemplate more fully in the studies to follow. Preface excerpt

Sermon on the Mount Book Review:

The Sermon on the Mount helps show what it means to become a “new creature in Christ” (2 Cor. 5:17). A secular illustration for this new life, which is included in this book, is found in an African story entitled “The Dirty Basket.” According to this tale, a young man became a Christian but soon learned he was still subject to strong temptations. One day this recent convert went to his grandfather to discuss his many failings. The grandfather suggested his grandson take a basket to the river and get some drinking water. The grandson looked at the basket and said it was dirty. The holes in this basket would prevent him from bringing back much water. The grandfather insisted his relative do as he had asked. The young man made six attempts to bring back water in this filthy basket and each time he failed. After returning to his grandpa and complaining about the basket, the grandfather pointed out how clean the basket had become. Also, the reeds from which the basket was made had swelled from all the water. The Sermon on the Mount helps dirty and unholy people “keep putting water in the basket” to conform more and more to the image of Christ.

Understanding the Sermon on the Mount Book Review:

These three chapters have been the most popular in the entire Bible. Anyone who has the curiosity and patience to study the indices of biblical quotations in the Church Fathers of the first three centuries will discover that Matthew 5 was quoted far more frequently than any other chapter in the Bible, while chapters 5-7 were quoted more frequently than any other three consecutive chapters. While innumerable commentaries have been written on individual books of the Bible, the Sermon on the Mount is one of the few sections within a book selected for special detailed study. The Sermon has long been recognized as the classic statement of one aspect of the Christian tradition. - Prologue.

What are They Saying about Matthew's Sermon on the Mount? Book Review:

What Are They Saying About Matthew's Sermon on the Mount? is an excellent summary of the contemporary scholarship on the Sermon on the Mount from the past thirty years. Author Warren Carter has selected the historical, source, and redaction critical studies by biblical scholars as well as ethical reflections considered most important over the past three decades. He begins, most appropriately, with the sources of the sermon, moves on to its structure, and then looks at the situation of Matthew's readers. He next analyzes the content of the sermon, together with the Lord's Prayer. Finally, he considers the ethical claims of the sermon, especially issues of interpreting the sermon for contemporary faith communities. This is an essential resource for everyone interested in understanding the Sermon on the Mount.

Reading the Sermon on the Mount Book Review:

In Reading the Sermon on the Mount, Charles H. Talbert explores the religious message put forth in the first large teaching section of the Gospel according to Matthew and finds it to have a relevance often overlooked in academic studies. Seeking to hear and understand the text of Matthew 5-7 as someone living in the Mediterranean about 100 C.E. would have encountered it, Talbert argues for a broader interpretation of the Sermon than scholars typically advance. He suggests that the Sermon cannot be reduced to a discussion of ethics but includes considerations of piety. He contends that it is a text about covenant fidelity to God and to other humans, in which Jesus seeks to affect perceptions, dispositions, and intentions. The text thus functions primarily as a catalyst for character formation rather than as a compendium of obligations.
