Southern Cultures The Help Special Issue Book Review:

Southern Cultures: The Help Special Issue Volume 20: Number 1 – Spring 2014 Table of Contents Front Porch, by Harry L. Watson "Lauded for her endless gifts and selfless generosity, Mammy is summoned from the kitchen to refute the critics of southern race relations; cruelly circumscribed and taken for granted, she silently confirms them all." The Divided Reception of The Help by Suzanne W. Jones The more one examines the reception of The Help, the less one is able to categorize the reception as divided between blacks and whites or academics and general readers or those who have worked as domestics and those who haven't. Black Women's Memories and The Help by Valerie Smith "Cultural products—literary texts, television series, films, music, theatre, etc.—that look back on the Movement tell us at least as much about how contemporary culture views its own racial politics as they do about the past they purport to represent, often conveying the fantasy that the United States has triumphed over and transcended its racial past." "A Stake in the Story": Kathryn Stockett's The Help, Ellen Douglas's Can't Quit You, Baby, and the Politics of Southern Storytelling by Susan V. Donaldson "Like The Help, Can't Quit You, Baby focuses on the layers of habit, antipathy, resentment, suspicion, attachment, and silence linking white employer and black employee, but in ways that are far more unsettling." "We Ain't Doin' Civil Rights": The Life and Times of a Genre, as Told in The Help by Allison Graham "Perhaps because the modern Civil Rights Movement and television news came of age together, the younger medium was destined to become an iconographic feature of the civil rights genre." Every Child Left Behind: Minny's Many Invisible Children in The Help by Kimberly Wallace-Sanders "The question arises: wouldn't the mammy characters be rendered more believable in their altruism if it extended beyond white children to all children?" Kathryn Stockett's Postmodern First Novel by Pearl McHaney "Pleasure and anger are dependent on one another for heightened authenticity. Discussing The Help with delight and outrage seems just the right action." Not Forgotten: Twenty-Five Years Out from Telling Memories Conversations Between Mary Yelling and Susan Tucker compiled and introduced by Susan Tucker "I am glad she used what the women told us and made something different from it. She made people listen. I know it is fiction, and I know not everyone liked it, but she made people not forget. What more can you want?" Mason-Dixon Lines Prayer for My Children poetry by Kate Daniels About the Contributors Southern Cultures is published quarterly (spring, summer, fall, winter) by the University of North Carolina Press. The journal is sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Center for the Study of the American South.

The Help Behind the Story Book Review:

Kathryn Stockett's unconventional childhood in Mississippi, along with a special relationship with her family's housekeeper, set the backdrop for this intriguing story of discrimination, privilege, and friendship. The brutal and unflinching honesty of this novel exposes many of the negative parts of Southern culture that some would like to forget, while simultaneously displaying Stockett's dark sense of humor. What unusual challenges did the author face on her journey from manuscript to published book? From where did she draw inspiration for her vivid characters? Why did The Help inspire such passionate fans as well as detractors? How do we as humans cope with severe loss in our lives, especially when it happens over time? Why do people discriminate against and judge one another? Can three women from very different perspectives help to bring about change in a era of firmly held prejudices? All of these issues and more are explored in the award-winning tale of The Help. Experience: The Behind the Story Effect After reading a BTS... Bookclub In a Box Discusses the Help by Kathryn Stockett Book Review:

It's 1962 in Jackson, Mississippi, and Skeeter has just graduated from Ole Miss. At a time and place where the ideal white woman is petite with carefully groomed straight hair and even more carefully groomed manners, Skeeter is tall and outspoken, with curly hair. Her mother wants Skeeter to wed; Skeeter wants to be a journalist. With the help of two of the town's black maids, Skeeter sets out to write a book telling the maids' stories from their point of view. But in Jackson, where a black boy is blinded for accidentally using a whites-only bathroom, and Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers is shot in his driveway in front of his children, this is a dangerous undertaking. Every Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide includes complete coverage of the themes and symbols, writing style and interesting background information on the novel and the author.

A Study of Deities of Rig Veda with the Help of Science Book Review:

This Is Probably For The First Time That A Serious Study Of Deities Of Rig Veda Has Been Made With The Help Of Modern Research Methodology And Science To Find Out What The Rishis Had Said, A Few Thousand Years Back, About The Deities. Efforts Were Also Made To Identify These Gods. It Is A Finding Of Great Importance That What Rishis Had Said About These Gods Is Being Corroborated By The Western Science Today. Dr. Gupta Has Grouped These 33 Gods Of Rig Veda In Three Categories: (I) Natural Phenomena Gods Sky, Earth, Fire, Air And Water. All The Material Things Are Produced By Their Permutations And Combinations. These Five Natural Phenomena Gods Have Their Sub-Gods Also. For Example, Agni Has Surya Agni (Nuclear Energy), Apan Napat Agni (Agni In The Sky Like Lightning), Davanal (Agni On Earth), Badvanal (Agni In The Oceans Or Water) And Jathragni (Agni In The Body); (Ii) Gods Connected With Soul Energy Such As Vishnu (Can Be Compared With A Modern Generating Station), Brahama, Who Induces The Tiny, Invisible, Weightless Particles Of Soul Energy In All The Living Beings To Give Them Life, Shiva, Who, At An Interval Of Time, Takes Out This Particle Of Soul Energy From All The Living Beings And They All Become Dead, And Yama, Who And Whose Assistants Take These Tiny Particles Of Soul To A Place Called Yama Loka; (Iii) Craftsmen Gods Such As Vishvakarma, Tvastha And Ribhugan Who Assemble And Mix The Five Basic Elements In Different Proportions To Create Structures Or Forms So That Soul-Particles Can Be Introduced In Them; And (Iv) Miscellaneous Gods Such As Rishis And Other Men, Animals (Cow, Frog, Etc.) Raised To Godhood, And Other Important Things Like Meaning Of Prayer, Does Rig Veda Give History Etc.

A Cross Cultural Analysis of Help Seeking for Symptoms of Depression in Japanese Primary School Teachers Book Review:

This cross-cultural study investigates help-seeking for depression among Japanese primary school teachers. Help-seeking for depressive symptoms is examined quantitatively by administering the Help-Seeking Scale for Depression among participants. In addition, this study qualitatively examines the help-seeking pathways of participants according to Kleinman's explanatory model of help-seeking. The objective of the study was to determine possible motivators for Japanese and other Asian people to seek professional help for symptoms of mental illness. The participants consisted of 71 Japanese school teachers from four primary schools located in the Kansai region of Japan. Participants' conceptualizations of depression were assessed using the Help-Seeking Scale for Depression (HSSD) after reading a vignette describing depressive symptoms. Participants' perceived severity of depressive symptoms (hypothesis 1) and prior therapy/counseling experience (hypothesis 2) significantly predicted professional help-seeking. The prevalence of depression was significantly higher in female participants (hypothesis 3); results indicating prevalence were non-significant for males. Hypotheses 1 and 2 were supported at p
