On the Facilitation of the Academy Book Review:

"The ‘academy’ is not restricted to the architectural limits of the university, but a broader conception of education that, through its social dissemination, ought to be continually shaped in relation to academic practice, thinking and living. Educational institutions are not solely modern providers of a pertinent workforce but foremost communities of thought with cultural, political and social importance. On the Facilitation of the Academy is thus concerned with educational issues that cohere, but also quarrels with, the university institution today as the highest institutionalised place for learning. The contributors in this volume consider practices of learning, teaching and knowledge acquisition in academic environments. It challenges educational issues in relation to conversation, discourse and tradition as well as contains contributions on threshold concepts, knowledge production and dangerous thinking. Belonging to a variety of academic orientations – philosophy, educational theory, psychoanalysis, communication studies – the authors in this volume offer different takes, but share similar features and aspects, on the worries that should occupy academe today."

Handel and Maurice Greene s Circle at the Apollo Academy Book Review:

The Apollo Academy, a musical club founded in 1731 by Maurice Greene and his friend Michael Christian Festing, was the performance location of various oratorios, odes and masques produced by composers in Greene’s circle of friends, colleagues and pupils. Many of the works performed both in and outside the academy meetings are based on subjects such as Jephtha, Deborah and the choice of Hercules which were well known in eighteenth-century England and also attracted the attention of Handel. This long-overdue study explores these works in terms of their intellectual contexts (political, religious, social and cultural), comparing them to Handel’s compositions on the same or similar subjects. Additionally, detailed source information and musical analysis of the works is included as well as a discussion of the competition between Handel and his English contemporaries in order to provide a fuller picture of the diverse musical and cultural life in London during the first half of the eighteenth century.

Art and the Academy in the Nineteenth Century Book Review:

Throughout the nineteenth century, academies functioned as the main venues for the teaching, promotion, and display of art. Contemporary scholars have, for the most part, denigrated academic art, calling it formulaic, unoriginal, and repetitious. The contributors to Art and the Academy in the Nineteenth Century challenge this entrenched notion and consider how academies worldwide have represented an important system of artistic preservation and transmission. Their essays eschew easy binaries that have reigned in academia for more than half a century and that simply oppose the avant-garde to academicism.

Capitalizing on Investments in Science and Technology Book Review:

Although the United States is currently capitalizing on its investment in science and technology effectively, there remains much room for improvement. This volume identifies the ingredients for success in capitalizing on such investments to produce national benefits, assesses current U.S. performance, and identifies future challenges. The book cites specific examples and examines several cross-cutting issues. It explores the possibility that the national research portfolio is losing diversity as a result of less long-term research in critical fields such as networking and materials. It also examines the implications of imbalances in the supply of and demand for science and engineering talent in emerging interdisciplinary fields such as bioinformatics.

Globalised re gendering of the academy and leadership Book Review:

The significance of Higher Education to national knowledge-based economies has made the sector the object of government policies, international monitoring, and corporatization. This radical global restructuring of higher education is gendered in its processes, practices, and effects. Exploring how the re-organisation of the sector has redefined academic, management, and professional roles and identities, this book considers the different impacts of structural change for men and women working at diverse levels of the academy. Drawing from empirical studies undertaken in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australasia the contributions offer a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives, including large scale comparative data and case studies. They inform what is a key policy issue in the 21st century – the re-positioning of women in the academy and leadership. Despite a range of institutional equity strategies in which women learnt the ‘rules of the game’, this book shows that structural and cultural barriers – often conceptualised through metaphors such as sticky floors, glass ceilings, chilly climates, or dead-end pipelines – have not disappeared as might be expected as the academy becomes numerically feminized. Each chapter provides an insight into how historical legacies, cultural contexts, geographic locations, modes of regional and institutional governance, and national policies are mediated and vernacularized through practice by localized gender regimes and orders. This book was originally published as a special issue of Gender and Education.
