Ten Tough Problems in Christian Thought and Belief Book Review:

An all-powerful God who permits unspeakable horrors and sent a Son who threatened more to come, forever, to those who don't believe in him. An inspired holy book that turns out to be full of archaic nonsense, moral failures, and contradictions. A world of disagreement not just between Christians and other religions, but within Christianity itself. Blood sacrifice and a tale of the walking dead as the very foundation of faith. These are just a few aspects of Ten very Tough Problems that David Madison describes in this wonderfully deep yet humorous dismantling of his former faith. Combining rigorous scholarship with engaging personal reflections and refreshing wit, he offers understanding and even some laughs while walking with readers past the gravestones of Christian thought and belief.

God Is Not Great Book Review:

Christopher Hitchens, described in the London Observer as “one of the most prolific, as well as brilliant, journalists of our time” takes on his biggest subject yet–the increasingly dangerous role of religion in the world. In the tradition of Bertrand Russell’s Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris’s recent bestseller, The End Of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope’s awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.

The Universal Christ Book Review:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From one of the world’s most influential spiritual thinkers, a long-awaited book exploring what it means that Jesus was called “Christ,” and how this forgotten truth can restore hope and meaning to our lives. “Anyone who strives to put their faith into action will find encouragement and inspiration in the pages of this book.”—Melinda Gates In his decades as a globally recognized teacher, Richard Rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. Yet Rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in Christianity: Jesus. Most know who Jesus was, but who was Christ? Is the word simply Jesus’s last name? Too often, Rohr writes, our understandings have been limited by culture, religious debate, and the human tendency to put ourselves at the center. Drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God’s constant, unfolding work in the world. “God loves things by becoming them,” he writes, and Jesus’s life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from God—except by its own negative choice. When we recover this fundamental truth, faith becomes less about proving Jesus was God, and more about learning to recognize the Creator’s presence all around us, and in everyone we meet. Thought-provoking, practical, and full of deep hope and vision, The Universal Christ is a landmark book from one of our most beloved spiritual writers, and an invitation to contemplate how God liberates and loves all that is.

The God Delusion 10th Anniversary Edition Book Review:

The God Delusion caused a sensation when it was published in 2006. Within weeks it became the most hotly debated topic, with Dawkins himself branded as either saint or sinner for presenting his hard-hitting, impassioned rebuttal of religion of all types. His argument could hardly be more topical. While Europe is becoming increasingly secularized, the rise of religious fundamentalism, whether in the Middle East or Middle America, is dramatically and dangerously dividing opinion around the world. In America, and elsewhere, a vigorous dispute between 'intelligent design' and Darwinism is seriously undermining and restricting the teaching of science. In many countries religious dogma from medieval times still serves to abuse basic human rights such as women's and gay rights. And all from a belief in a God whose existence lacks evidence of any kind. Dawkins attacks God in all his forms. He eviscerates the major arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of a supreme being. He shows how religion fuels war, foments bigotry and abuses children. The God Delusion is a brilliantly argued, fascinating polemic that will be required reading for anyone interested in this most emotional and important subject.

Christian Beliefs Book Review:

Christian Essentials Made Plain and Simple God doesn’t call every Christian to go off to seminary, but there are certain matters of doctrine—that is, the church’s teaching—that every Christian simply must know. Theology is important because what we believe affects how we live. If you’re a relatively new believer in Jesus, or if you’re a more mature Christian looking for a quick brush-up on basics of the faith, Christian Beliefs is for you. This readable guide to twenty basic Christian beliefs is a condensation of Wayne Grudem’s award-winning book on systematic theology, prized by pastors and teachers everywhere. He and his son, Elliot, have boiled down the essentials of Christian theology for the average layperson and made them both clear and applicable to life. You will learn about the Bible, the characteristics of God, what it means that we are created in the image of God, what God has done for us in Christ, the purpose of the church, and much more. Each chapter includes questions for personal review or group discussion. These truly are twenty basic beliefs that every Christian should know. Wayne Grudem is a master teacher with the ability to explain profound truths in simple language. He is a man of deep conviction and theological passion—and those who read this book will be both educated and encouraged in the faith. R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky Based on Systematic Theology, this summary will certainly help beginners with Christ to get the hang of their faith. J. I. Packer, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia As Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology contracts into a compact book, I do not lose my enthusiasm for the truth he loves and the clarity of his words. Caught in the Pulpit Book Review:

What is it like to be a preacher or rabbi who no longer believes in God? In this expanded and updated edition of their groundbreaking study, Daniel C. Dennett and Linda LaScola comprehensively and sensitively expose an inconvenient truth that religious institutions face in the new transparency of the information age—the phenomenon of clergy who no longer believe what they publicly preach. In confidential interviews, clergy from across the ministerial spectrum—from liberal to literal—reveal how their lives of religious service and study have led them to a truth inimical to their professed beliefs and profession. Although their personal stories are as varied as the denominations they once represented, or continue to represent—whether Catholic, Baptist, Episcopalian, Methodist, Mormon, Pentecostal, or any of numerous others—they give voice not only to their own struggles but also to those who similarly suffer in tender and lonely silence. As this study poignantly and vividly reveals, their common journey has far-reaching implications not only for their families, their congregations, and their communities—but also for the very future of religion.

A Thematic Access Oriented Bibliography of Jesus s Resurrection Book Review:

The keystone of Christianity is Jesus's physical, bodily resurrection. Present-day scholars can be significantly challenged as they forage through voluminous documents on the resurrection of Jesus. The literature measures well over seven thousand sources in English-language books alone. This makes finding specific sources that are most relevant for specific scholarly purposes an arduous task. Even when a specific book is relevant, finding the parts of the book that are most relevant to the resurrection rather than other topics often requires additional effort. A Thematic Access-Oriented Bibliography of Jesus's Resurrection addresses these challenges in several ways. First, the bibliography organizes more than seven thousand English sources into twelve main categories and then thirty-four subcategories, which are designed to help you find the most relevant literature quickly and efficiently. Embedded are pro and con arguments which support efficient access through brief annotations and then annotate the diversity and complexity of the field of religion by including sources that represent a diverse range of views: theistic (e.g., Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc.), agnostic, and nontheistic. The objective of this bibliography is to provide convenient access to relevant sources from a variety of perspectives, allowing you to browse or find the one source accurately and with ease.

Discourses on Livy Book Review:

Discourses on Livy is the founding document of modern republicanism, and Harvey C. Mansfield and Nathan Tarcov have provided the definitive English translation of this classic work. Faithful to the original Italian text, properly attentive to Machiavelli's idiom and subtlety of thought, it is eminently readable. With a substantial introduction, extensive explanatory notes, a glossary of key words, and an annotated index, the Discourses reveals Machiavelli's radical vision of a new science of politics, a vision of "new modes and orders" that continue to shape the modern ethos. "[Machiavelli] found in Livy the means to inspire scholars for five centuries. Within the Discourses, often hidden and sometimes unintended by their author, lie the seeds of modern political thought. . . . [Mansfield and Tarcov's] translation is careful and idiomatic."—Peter Stothard, The Times "Translated with painstaking accuracy—but also great readability."—Weekly Standard "A model of contemporary scholarship and a brave effort at Machiavelli translation that allows the great Florentine to speak in his own voice."—Choice

How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian Book Review:

The acclaimed Bible scholar and author of The Historical Jesus and God & Empire—“the greatest New Testament scholar of our generation” (John Shelby Spong) —grapples with Scripture’s two conflicting visions of Jesus and God, one of a loving God, and one of a vengeful God, and explains how Christians can better understand these passages in a way that enriches their faith. Many portions of the New Testament, introduce a compassionate Jesus who turns the other cheek, loves his enemies, and shows grace to all. But the Jesus we find in Revelation and some portions of the Gospels leads an army of angels bent on earthly destruction. Which is the true revelation of the Messiah—and how can both be in the same Bible? How to Read the Bible and Still be a Christian explores this question and offers guidance for the faithful conflicted over which version of the Lord to worship. John Dominic Crossan reconciles these contrasting views, revealing how different writers of the books of the Bible not only possessed different visions of God but also different purposes for writing. Often these books are explicitly competing against another, opposing vision of God from the Bible itself. Crossan explains how to navigate this debate and offers what he believes is the best central thread to what the Bible is all about. He challenges Christians to fully participate in this dialogue, thereby shaping their faith by reading deeply, reflectively, and in community with others who share their uncertainty. Only then, he advises, will Christians be able to read and understand the Bible without losing their faith.

Exploring Faith and Reason Book Review:

Have you ever wondered if it is possible to be a conservative evangelical Christian and also believe in biological evolution-believe that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old and that human beings share a common ancestor with not only chimpanzees, but also with mice and even earthworms? In Exploring Faith and Reason, you will find that it is not only possible, it is an essential element of how many Christians come to more fully appreciate the complexity and the great glory of God's creation. Of course many people-Christians and non-Christians alike-think that Christianity and evolution are opposing concepts. They perceive several specific points of conflict between them. Bruce Glass addresses each of these concerns by citing Scripture and the world's most respected theologians and by the application of reason. Revealed is a deeper and richer understanding of Biblical Scripture and its history. But most importantly, readers will gain a greater appreciation of the power and the capabilities of a living God that transcends space and time, as this insight is united with the findings of science. Kirkus Reviews described Exploring Faith and Reason this way: "Smart, well-informed... lucid, engaging... Glass delivers a superb exposition of Darwinian theory and a meticulous, sharply reasoned discussion of the evidence that supports it. His logic is impeccable when he insists that evolutionary theory does not rule out the existence of God." Tremper Longman III, Ph.D., Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies at Westmont College said, "As a non-scientist, I found that Exploring Faith and Reason presents an accessible, fascinating, and compelling presentation of evolution. As a biblical scholar, I appreciate Glass' grasp of theological issues and the biblical text. His conclusion that evolution and Christianity are compatible is a crucial message for the church today." Peter Enns, Ph.D., Professor of Christian Studies at Eastern University said, "Glass has provided a thorough look at the evidence and the processes of evolution, along side a compelling case for its compatibility with Christianity. His theological analysis is very sound as he addresses several of the commonly perceived points of tension between the Christian faith and evolution. For a thorough understanding of these issues, this book is among the very best resources available." Reverend Jordan Ogden, Lead Pastor at Antioch Community Church in Dallas, said: "Mr. Glass tackles a historically controversial topic with finesse. Wherever one may be on the issue of evolution, Glass' superb scholarship and unbiased commentary on issues of faith does not disappoint." Reverend Dr. Kristin Huffman, Associate Pastor at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston, said: "Bruce Glass has provided a thought provoking look at the most significant theological issues arising from the advent of evolutionary science. Whatever their conclusions, readers will find Mr. Glass' treatment a welcome reminder of the richness and depth of God's Word, as well as a fresh perspective on God's glorious creation." ForeWord Clarion Reviews described it as, "Well written, thoroughly researched, and honestly fair... The book's thorough and eminently readable scientific explanations provide general science readers with a lucid understanding of this complex subject." Reverend Michael Dowd, author of Thank God for Evolution, endorsed by six Nobel Prize-winning scientists and by religious leaders across the spectrum, said that, "In Exploring Faith and Reason. Bruce Glass has emerged as a fresh voice for the reconciliation of head and heart. Couched in the language and theology of conservative evangelical Christianity, Mr. Glass' book provides a welcomed bridge between an evidential worldview and traditional Christian conviction. Believers and non-believers alike will find much of value in these pages."

The Book of Five Rings Classics Illustrated Book Review:

In "A Book of Five Rings," Miyamoto Musashi takes the reader into a world filled to the brim with devotion, self-respect, discipline, honesty and purity of thought. Written originally for warriors and samurai in a completely different time and culture, Musashi's book provides a remarkable source of inspiration for self-development today. His teachings are concise and to the point. He uses phrases like "you must understand this" and "you must practice diligently" and explains only general, but unquestionable and fundamental, concepts of the Way of the Warrior. While some of his guidelines are are not directly applicable in our time and age, those about striving to achieve improvement on the inside as well as the outside couldn't be more on target. Taken literally this book is about how to become an efficient, albeit enlightened, killer. It's value comes from reading between the lines--lines which speak volumes.

The Leap Of Faith Book Review:

The book explores the origins of religious beliefs, and some of the questions of ethics and morals that religion does not answer. It is not necessary to believe in a Creator in order to derive meaning out of life. Good and bad events will happen whether or not we believe in a God, and the fight against evil can be won without religion. Mankind's religious beliefs have become entirely inappropriate, and humans have outgrown their need for the supernatural. The survival of the human species depends upon mankind's own inner strengths and resources, and not upon any gods or spirits.

Science and Spirituality Book Review:

You have been taught, by most of society, that Science has proven that there can be no God. That is nonsense - this is just a belief, even a Dogma of Science, but it is not possible to use Science to discuss the presence of a God. That sort of thing was assumed out when Traditional Science was born almost four centuries ago, and for good reason. There was way too much to do in the study of mass and Energy - besides no one knew how to measure a thought, an emotion, a belief, etc., way back then. Although we now know how to measure brain changes when we experience such things, we still do not know how to actually measure any of these 'pure information' processes as such. If you are going to do something well, you must first establish a sound foundation. Listing all of your explicit (openly stated) assumptions and also finding out your implicit (implied, but not yet openly stated) assumptions is critical. Study of the history of Science shows that this has not yet been done well. Some really important work is needed here. So far much of Science has been built upon shifting sand. Ever since the great discoveries of the early 1900s, where it became obvious that emotional thoughts could really influence the state of waves and particles, then the reality of probability at the foundation of matter, changes should have been made in how we taught ourselves about Science. When Einstein showed us that mass and energy were just two states of the same thing, more changes in teaching about the founding assumptions of interactions was needed. When he then showed us (proven by others) that gravity distorted space, even more interactions came to light. In just about every field of Science, new interactions are showing up all of the time. The supposed of leaders of scientific societies have responded by making the impossibility of some interactions a definite Dogma that cannot be discussed, let alone questioned. The study of Philosophy, within which the spirituality of Religions is found, has been seriously damaged by most experts who try to use the logical processes of Science in a field that is all about non-logical processes. Logic can only be a minor tool here, when you start studying thoughts, emotions, out-of-body experiences, belief processes and effects, etc. In the Far East, some gurus and avatars are doing totally non-logical things, but that is not being properly studied by many scientists; because these things are non-logical and cannot be true - therefore cannot be studied. This latter choice is certainly anti-Science, but is pervasive in many fields worthy of study. If it is supposedly not true, than that should be shown to be a newly-defined reality. Only when Theology, as well as Philosophy as a whole, start to use non-logical approaches to study the field of non-logical processes will we see huge strides in this area. You are a spiritual being having a human experience. This human journey will bring you lessons to be learned as you grow in understanding; as well as required action, in your destined quest towards your Divine Creator (who we call God, Allah, Jehovah, etc.). Humans seem to have a very powerful need to understand both Who we are and Why we are here; although that has largely been trained out of us, even on our parent's knee. In the end, however, you will have to find out and follow your path to The Way that will help you grow spiritually. In the end, Destiny will win out! This small book is meant to stir up the interest of you readers who are starting to wonder about these critical 'Who we are' and 'Why we are here' questions. It is written by a student, for other students. We humans are evolving from the thinking but fearful Homo sapiens species into the loving Homo spiritus species. Learning how to truly Love demands an answer to these great questions. The time to start on your journey is NOW!

Going through difficult times provides an opportunity to see God at work. By appropriating His strength, Christians can find hope in the midst of failure, understand and manage emotions, and bring positive results from negative circumstances.
