Animal Studies Book Review:

Prefaced with a brief introduction to the field of animal studies, the text explores the key influential terms, topics and debates which have had a major impact on the field, and that students are most likely to encounter in their animal studies classes. Animal Studies provides a guide to key concepts in the burgeoning interdisciplinary field of animal studies, laid out in A-Z format. While Human–Animal Studies and Critical Animal Studies are the main frameworks that inform the bulk of the writings in animal studies and the key concepts discussed in the volume, other approaches such as anthrozoology and cognitive ethology are also explored. The entries in the volume attend to the differences in ongoing debates among scholars and activists, showing that what is commonly called “animal studies” is far from a unified body of work. A full bibliography of sources is included at the end of the book, along with an extensive index. The book will be a valuable guide to undergraduate and postgraduate students in geography, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, women’s studies, and other related disciplines. Seasoned researchers will find the book helpful, when researching topics outside of their specialization. Outside of academia, it will be of interest to activists, as well as professional organizations.

Animal Farm Book Review:

George Orwell’s celebrated novella, Animal Farm, is a biting, allegorical, political satire on totalitarianism in general and Stalinism in particular. One of the most famous works in modern English literature, it is a telling comment on Soviet Russia under Stalin’s brutal dictatorship based on a cult of personality which was enforced through a reign of terror. The book tells a seemingly simple story of farm animals who rebel against their master in the hope of stopping their exploitation at the hand of humans and creating a society where animals would be equal, free and happy. Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before. The novel thus demonstrates how easily good intentions can be subverted into tyranny.Orwell has himself said that it was the first book in which he had tried, with full consciousness of what he was doing, ‘to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole.’ The book was first published in England in 1945, and has since then remained a favourite with readers all over the world, and has consistently been included in all prestigious bestseller lists for the past many years.

The Book of the Animals Episode 6 Bilingual English Spanish Book Review:

NEW EDITION!!Well... it seems that these animals don't want to take their medicine! But step by step, each one discovers that taking medicine is very important for the animals, as well as for the children!A funny way to learn and a funny way to teach. As everyone knows how difficult it can be to explain to young children how important it is to take medicine...---THE BOOK OF THE ANIMALS:FUN LEARNING FOR CHILDREN AND PARENTSWhat are certainly the most occurring moments in a parent's life? When their child doesn't want to wash, eat, sleep, go to school, share, take medicine, get vaccinated... And what can a parent answer to these refusals? The successful "Book of The Animals" bilingual children's books series was created with the aim to help both parents and children to discover the benefits of washing, eating, sleeping, going to school, sharing, taking medicine, getting vaccinated... in a fun as well as educational manner. Since the books are also bilingual, parents will enjoy the teaching and the interactivity they can gain from reading them with their children.THE AUDIENCEThe books are geared towards children aged 2-5, before elementary/primary school. They will likely be bilingual children whose parents want to encourage the learning of their two current languages. They will also be children whose parents want to teach a language at a young age. Some teachers have also been using the books of the series as a way to teach a second language to children, with themes easy for them to both understand and memorise.THE CURRENT BOOKSThere are currently seven books in the series. Each episode brings on new animals, new words, new situations and new stories.- Ep.1. "These Animals... Don't Want to Wash!" (2008)- Ep.2. "These Animals... Don't Want to Eat!" (2009)- Ep.3. "These Animals... Don't Want to Sleep!" (2010)- Ep.4. "These Animals... Don't Want to Go to School!" (2011)- Ep.5. "These Animals... Don't Want to Share!" (2011)- Ep.6. "These Animals... Don't Want to Take their Medicine!" (2012)- Ep.7. "These Animals... Don't Want to Get Vaccinated!" (2012)The books are all available in either bilingual or monolingual versions:- Bilingual versions: English-French, English-Portuguese, English-Italian, English-Spanish, English-Swedish, English-Creole, English-Japanese...More versions still to come!Check out the official website: www.TheBookOfTheAnimals.comREVIEW"The Book of the Animals is a planned series of illustrated books for young children. [...] These delightful books tell the story of what happens when the animals in the stories, like many young children, don't want to eat and don't want to wash...The books are very suitable both for reading to young children and for older children to use to learn to read in both languages. They might even persuade them to wash and eat their dinner! The repetitive structure is supportive of children learning new words and the illustrations work well alongside the text to help understanding of unfamiliar words.I can easily imagine young children demanding repeat readings and enjoying learning the text by heart as many children do with favourite stories. Children learning to make up and write their own stories might well want to write a personalised version, using the structure as a prop.I think the stories would work well both in the home and in the classroom."(Review published in The Cass School of Education, by Dr Raymonde Sneddon, Research Fellow for "The Cass School of Education" at the University of East London, and Honorary Research Fellow of Birkbeck College, in the Department of Applied Linguistics)SUPPORT'The Book of The Animals' series is supported & recommended by ABRIR UK, a Brazilian Association for Educational Projects in the United Kingdom. website:

One Hundred Dogs and Counting Book Review:

A challenging foster dog inspires an experienced foster mama to explore where the endless stream of unwanted dogs is coming from—and how things could change. After nearly a year struggling to find a home for a particular foster dog, Cara begins to wonder how the story ends—when will all the dogs be saved? Even after the one-hundredth foster dog passes through Cara’s home, the stream of homeless dogs appears endless. Seized by the need to act, Cara grabs her best friend, fills a van with donations, and heads south to discover what is really happening in the rural shelters where her foster dogs originate. What she discovers will break her heart and compel her to share the story of heroes and villains and plenty of good dogs, in the hope of changing this world. From North Carolina where pit bulls fill the shelters and heart-worm rages to Tennessee where dogs are left forgotten in pounds and on to Alabama where unlikely heroes fight in a state that has largely forsaken its responsibilities to its animals, Cara meets the people working on the front lines in this national crisis of unwanted animals. The dogs, the people and their inspiring stories draw her south again and again in search of answers and maybe a dog of her own. One Hundred Dogs and Counting will introduce the reader to many wonderful dogs—from sweet Oreo to quirky Flannery—but also to inspirational people sacrificing personal lives and fortunes to save deserving animals. Join Cara on the rescue road as she follows her heart into the places where too many dogs are forgotten and discovers glimmers of hope that the day is coming when every dog will have a home.

Shelters Shacks and Shanties Book Review:

ÊIf my present reader happens to be a Boy Scout or a scout-master who wants the scouts to build a tower for exhibition purposes, he can do so by following the directions here given, but if there is real necessity for haste in the erection of this tower, of course we cannot build one as tall as we might where we have more time. With a small tower all the joints may be quickly lashed together with strong, heavy twine, rope, or even wire; and in the wilderness it will probably be necessary to bind the joints with pliable roots, or cordage made of bark or withes; but as this is not a book on woodcraft we will suppose that the reader has secured the proper material for fastening the joints of the frame of this signal-tower and he must now shoulder his axe and go to the woods in order to secure the necessary timber. First let him cut eight straight polesÑthat is, as straight as he can find them. These poles should be about four and one half inches in diameter at their base and sixteen and one half feet long. After all the branches are trimmed off the poles, cut four more sticks each nine feet long and two and a half or three inches in diameter at the base; when these are trimmed into shape one will need twenty six or seven more stout sticks each four and one half feet long for braces and for flooring for the platform.

Agricultural Waste and Residues Book Review:

This book is dedicated to the reuse of waste and residues from the agricultural sector. Plant residues, as well as animal manure and residues from animal breeding, contain useful elements that can be processed for production of fertilizers, compost for soil recultivation, and biofuels. The emerging energy and resources crisis calls for development of sustainable reuse of waste and residues. This book contains eight chapters divided into four sections. The first section contains the introductory chapter from the editor. The second section is related to the preparation of fertilizers and compost for soil amelioration from agricultural residues and waste water. The third section considers the use of agricultural waste for solid biofuels and biogas. The fourth section discusses sustainability and risk assessment related to the use of agricultural waste and residues.
