Redemption Road Book Review:

Sometimes the best cure for a wounded soul is a really long walk . . . One June morning, Fr. Brendan McManus stepped out for a much-needed walk—to be exact, a 500-mile hike on Spain’s renowned Camino de Santiago. A few years earlier, his brother had committed suicide, and the tragedy left Brendan physically, psychologically, and spiritually wounded. Something radical was required to rekindle his passion for life and renew his faith in God. Redemption Road is the story of a broken man putting one foot in front of the other as he attempts to let go of the anger, guilt, and sorrow that have been weighing him down. But the road to healing is fraught with peril: steep hills and intense heat, wrong turns and blistered feet. Worse still, a nagging leg injury could thwart Brendan’s ultimate goal of reaching the Camino’s end and honoring his brother in a symbolic act at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Constantly tempted to quit his quest, Brendan relies on the principles of Ignatian spirituality to guide him on his journey from desolation to consolation. For anyone going through the process of grieving, Redemption Road offers real hope— not that the path to peace will be easy, but that Christ, who himself suffered and died, will be with us every step of the way and lead us at last to wholeness and healing.

Redemption Road Book Review:

"Set in Monrovia during the administration of Liberia's former president, Charles Taylor, Redemption Road is a story of recovery, atonement, and the quest for peace and justice in a nation plagued by conflict and inequalities since its founding by freed American slaves. Life in war-torn Liberia is not easy, and it is especially challenging for Bendu Lewis, a young woman who counsels survivors of Liberia's civil war while struggling silently with memories of her own war experiences. When the warlord who once held her in captivity suddenly appears in town, she decides that for her own healing, and for the voiceless victims of the war, she must bring him to justice for his past atrocities. In her pursuit of Commander Cobra, Bendu finds much more than she bargained for, including the courage to finally confront and make amends for her own painful war-time secret. Written with compassion, honesty, and clarity, Elma Shaw's Redemption Road helps us to finally begin to make sense of what has been termed a 'senseless' war. Hers is a new but mature voice that shows remarkable insight into both the causes of Liberia's civil war, and the cure for healing the wounds and averting further conflict"--

Redemption Road Book Review:

Cherish Sade White highlights the challenges of women re-entering society after serving time in prison in Redemption Road. Drawing on her own experiences as an ex-offender, she identifies why so many women exiting the judicial system struggle with turning their backs on crime. As an ex-offender, she found the road to redemption miry—but not impossible. She offers her personal story along with facts and theories to assist women, and those working with them, in finding redemption from a life of crisis after incarceration. Today, the author is part of the solution and no longer a part of the problem. Redemption was always the plan of God for her life. As an ex-offender, the road you take is your choice. You can choose freedom—but freedom is not free. If you want to overcome the mistakes of the past, define who you are, and reach your full potential as a woman, you’ll be inspired by the author’s story.

Everything She Forgot Book Review:

Some things aren't meant to be remembered . . . They're calling it the worst pileup in London history. Margaret Holloway is driving home, but her mind is elsewhere—on a troubled student, her daughter's acting class, the next day's meeting—when she's rear-ended and trapped in the wreckage. Just as she begins to panic, a disfigured stranger pulls her from the car seconds before it's engulfed in flames. Then he simply disappears. Though she escapes with minor injuries, Margaret feels that something's wrong. She's having trouble concentrating. Her emotions are running wild. More than that, flashbacks to the crash are also dredging up lost associations from her childhood, fragments of events that had been wiped from her memory. Whatever happened, she didn't merely forget—she chose to forget. And somehow, Margaret knows deep down that it has something to do with the man who saved her life. As Margaret uncovers a mystery with chilling implications for her family and her very identity, Everything She Forgot winds through a riveting dual narrative and asks the question: How far would you go to hide the truth—from yourself?

Iron House Book Review:

An old man is dying. When the old man is dead they will come for him. And they will come for her, to make him hurt. John Hart has written three New York Times bestsellers and won an unprecedented two back-to-back Edgar Awards. His books have been called "masterful" (Jeffery Deaver) and "gripping" (People) with "Grisham-style intrigue and Turow-style brooding" (The New York Times). Now he delivers his fourth novel—a gut-wrenching, heart-stopping thriller no reader will soon forget. HE WOULD GO TO HELL At the Iron Mountain Home for Boys, there was nothing but time. Time to burn and time to kill, time for two young orphans to learn that life isn't won without a fight. Julian survives only because his older brother, Michael, is fearless and fiercely protective. When tensions boil over and a boy is brutally killed, there is only one sacrifice left for Michael to make: He flees the orphanage and takes the blame with him. TO KEEP HER SAFE For two decades, Michael has been an enforcer in New York's world of organized crime, a prince of the streets so widely feared he rarely has to kill anymore. But the life he's fought to build unravels when he meets Elena, a beautiful innocent who teaches him the meaning and power of love. He wants a fresh start with her, the chance to start a family like the one he and Julian never had. But someone else is holding the strings. And escape is not that easy. . . . GO TO HELL, AND COME BACK BURNING The mob boss who gave Michael his blessing to begin anew is dying, and his son is intent on making Michael pay for his betrayal. Determined to protect the ones he loves, Michael spirits Elena—who knows nothing of his past crimes, or the peril he's laid at her door— back to North Carolina, to the place he was born and the brother he lost so long ago. There, he will encounter a whole new level of danger, a thicket of deceit and violence that leads inexorably to the one place he's been running from his whole life: Iron House. Now with an excerpt of John Hart's next book The Hush, available in February 2018.

The Hush Book Review:

New York Times bestseller The only writer in history to win consecutive Edgar Awards for Best Novel, New York Times bestselling author John Hart returns to the world of his most beloved novel, The Last Child Building on the world first seen in The Last Child (“A magnificent creation” —The Washington Post), John Hart delivers a stunning vision of a secret world, rarely seen. It’s been ten years since the events that changed Johnny Merrimon’s life and rocked his hometown to the core. Since then, Johnny has fought to maintain his privacy, but books have been written of his exploits; the fascination remains. Living alone on six thousand acres of once-sacred land, Johnny’s only connection to normal life is his old friend, Jack. They’re not boys anymore, but the bonds remain. What they shared. What they lost. But Jack sees danger in the wild places Johnny calls home; he senses darkness and hunger, an intractable intent. Johnny will discuss none of it, but there are the things he knows, the things he can do. A lesser friend might accept such abilities as a gift, but Jack has felt what moves in the swamp: the cold of it, the unspeakable fear. More than an exploration of friendship, persistence, and forgotten power, The Hush leaves all categories behind, and cements Hart's status as a writer of unique power.

The King of Lies Book Review:

John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed façade begin to crack. Work's troubled sister, her combative girlfriend, his gold digging socialite wife, and an unrequited lifelong love join a cast of small town characters that create no shortage of drama in this extraordinary, fast-paced suspense novel. Hart's mastery of prose and plot belie his newcomer status as he explores the true heart of a man. An illuminating anatomy of a murder and the ripple effect it produces within a family and a community, The King of Lies is a stunning debut. Redemption Road Book Review:

A true story of how I beat prescription drugs and depression by refocusing & becoming an Elvis Impersonator! A perfect example-conspiracy, fraud, defamation of character, abuse of power, & a cover up in a United States Government entity from 1987-2002. What can a person do? Hire a lawyer? File a Federal Lawsuit? What if that DOES NOT work? How does one get closure when they say NO APPEAL! This autobiography is a valid attempt to inform & prove that Americans are abused in the workplace, & oftentimes JUSTICE SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE! My fight was to preserve a livelihood & support my dysfunctional family! I was brought to the point of complete exhaustion & burnout after 10 years of harassment as an honest, caring civil servant, GS07. Because of corruption, nepotism, & other ACTS OF INJUSTICE, I was "singled out" to the point of a breakdown. I received a 20 YEAR HONORABLE DISCHARGE' under "false auspices" which are VERY UNTRUE! Justice in the court system was impossible because lawyers, judges, & the people involved "denied my right to be heard!" WHY? AM I NOT PROTECTED BY THE CONSTITUTION OF THE CAUTION: This book contains copies taken from my original medical records which have been "falsified" and copies from the original federal court proceedings proving that there is/was "PERSECUTION IN THE PROMISED LAND. Brad Mathias thought everything in his family was fine. A busy, contented dad, he had vaguely noticed that Bethany, his middle child, had become withdrawn and moody, but he assumed it was part of being a "teen" and didn't look any deeper. Until the night God spoke clearly to Brad and his wife: Ask her to reveal what she has hidden. They did--and learned the secret Bethany had been carrying, one that rocked their family to the core. In a desperate attempt to reach their daughter and to reconnect as a family, Brad and his wife piled everyone into the car and embarked on a wild, crazy, seven-thousand-mile, what-are-we-thinking trip across the country. As they drove, they realized how far apart they'd drifted, found unexpected blessings along the way--and journeyed together from pain and loss to recovery and redemption. In this book, Brad shares stories from the road about God's grace, gives practical tips on what he learned about reconnecting as a family, invites you to consider your own epic journey as a mother or father, and calls you to trust wholeheartedly in the amazing love God has for your kids.

Down River Book Review:

Down River is the winner of the 2008 Edgar Award for Best Novel. Everything that shaped him happened near that river.... Now its banks are filled with lies and greed, shame, and murder.... John Hart's debut, The King of Lies, was compelling and lyrical, with Janet Maslin of The New York Times declaring, "There hasn't been a thriller as showily literate since Scott Turow came along." Now, in Down River, Hart makes a scorching return to Rowan County, where he drives his characters to the edge, explores the dark side of human nature, and questions the fundamental power of forgiveness. Adam hase has a violent streak, and not without reason. As a boy, he saw things that no child should see, suffered wounds that cut to the core and scarred thin. The trauma left him passionate and misunderstood---a fighter. After being narrowly acquitted of a murder charge, Adam is hounded out of the only home he's ever known, exiled for a sin he did not commit. For five long years he disappears, fades into the faceless gray of New York City. Now he's back and nobody knows why, not his family or the cops, not the enemies he left behind. But Adam has his reasons. Within hours of his return, he is beaten and accosted, confronted by his family and the women he still holds dear. No one knows what to make of Adam's return, but when bodies start turning up, the small town rises against him and Adam again finds himself embroiled in the fight of his life, not just to prove his own innocence, but to reclaim the only life he's ever wanted. Bestselling author John Hart holds nothing back as he strips his characters bare. Secrets explode, emotions tear, and more than one person crosses the brink into deadly behavior as he examines the lengths to which people will go for money, family, and revenge. A powerful, heart-pounding thriller, Down River will haunt your thoughts long after the last page is turned. Praise for John Hart and The King of Lies "Treat yourself to something new and truly out of the ordinary." ---Rocky Mountain News "A top-notch debut. Hart's prose is like Raymond Chandler's, angular and hard." --Entertainment Weekly (grade A) "A gripping performance." ---People magazine "A marriage of carefully crafted prose alongside have-to-keep-reading suspense." ---The Denver Post "A masterful piece of writing." ---The News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) "A gripping mystery/thriller and a fully fleshed, thoughtful work of literature." ---Winston-Salem Journal "The King of Lies moves and reads like a book on fire." ---Pat Conroy "John Hart's debut . . . is that most engrossing of rarities, a well-plotted mystery novel that is written in a beautifully poetic style." ---Mark Childress, author of Crazy in Alabama "Grisham-style intrigue and Turow-style brooding." ---The New York Times Now with an excerpt from John Hart's next book The Hush, available in February 2018.

Redemption Road Book Review:

Redemption Road is a coming-of-age novel that follows a tragic, but ultimately redemptive year in the life of Jesse Falais Jones and his family. The family's life, deep in southern Louisiana, is altered when Jesse's father, Michael, a labourer on an offshore oil platform, survives a disastrous rig explosion, but returns home with PTSD. Violence follows Michael's anger, and Jesse is called upon to look after his family in ways that challenge and often compromise him. Research to develop this novel included an examination of texts detailing Cajun language and culture, the Louisiana coastline and local environmental problems, as well as multiple web searches on the subject of offshore oil rigs and rig disasters including those of the Deepwater Horizon and the Piper Alpha. I conducted additional research in person on a road trip through Louisiana with stops throughout Lafourche Parish, and overnight stays in Leeville and Grand Isle. The personal narratives of some of those I met have been fictionalized and included here. Finally, I used Google Maps to virtually emulate the road trips described in this novel. Redemption Road explores the themes of poverty, male violence, family loyalty, female survival and resistance, as well as environmental degradation, and cultural preservation. There is much darkness in this novel; however, even as Jesse's strength is constantly tested, there remains the ongoing possibility of hope.
