Using Prosopis as an energy source for refugees and host communities in Djibouti and controlling its rapid spread Book Review:

FAO, in collaboration with Djibouti’s Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Fishery, Livestock and Marine Resources and Ministry of Housing, Urban Planning and Environment, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, conducted the study presented in this report to assess the use of Prosopis woody biomass as a source of energy and options for increasing the efficiency of woodfuel supply chains. The study used socio-economic data collected through interviews, focus-group discussions, a desk review and a field visit, and a remote sensing analysis of Prosopis distribution, combined with field data, in four areas of interest in Djibouti: Douda, As Eyla, Tadjourah, and Hanlé. The report includes: •an assessment of challenges in meeting energy demand in displacement settings in Djibouti; •data on the distribution of Prosopis in the country and the quantity of standing Prosopis biomass at selected sites (which are also the country’s main Prosopis areas); and •an analysis of the economic potential of processing Prosopis woody biomass into briquettes and charcoal.

Latin American Dendroecology Book Review:

Latin America is a megadiverse territory hosting several hotspots of plant diversity and many types of forest biomes, ecosystems and climate types, from tropical rainforest to semi-arid woodlands. This combination of diverse forests and climates generates multiple responses to ecological changes affecting the structure and functioning of forest ecosystems. Recently, there have been major efforts to improve our understanding of such impacts on ecosystems processes. However, there is a dearth of studies focused on Latin-American forest ecosystems that could provide novel insights into the patterns and mechanisms of ecological processes in response to environmental stress. The abundance of “New World” tree species with dendrochronological potential constitutes an ideal opportunity to improve the ecological state of knowledge regarding these diverse forest types, which are often threatened by several impacts such as logging or conversion to agricultural lands. Thus, detailed information on the dendroecology of these species will improve our understanding of forests in the face of global change. Accordingly, this book identifies numerous relevant ecological processes and scales, ranging from tree species to populations and communities, and from both dendrochronological and dendroecological perspectives. It offers a valuable reference guide for the exploration of long-term ecological interactions between trees and their environmental conditions, and will foster further research and international projects on the continent and elsewhere.

Optimization of Acid Hydrolysis in Ethanol Production from Prosopis juliflora Book Review:

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, Addis Ababa University, language: English, abstract: Lignocellulosic materials (eg.Prosopis juliflora) can be utilized to produce ethanol, a promising alternative energy source for the limited crude oil. This study involved optimisation of acid hydrolysis in ethanol production from prosopis juliflora. The conversion of prosopis juliflora to ethanol can be achieved mainly by three process steps: pretreatment of prosopis juliflora wood to remove lignin and hemicellulose, acid hydrolysis of pretreated prosopis juliflora to convert cellulose into reducing sugar(glucose) and fermentation of the sugars to ethanol using Saccharomyces cerevisiae in anaerobic condition. A two level full factorial design with four factors, two levels and two replicas (24*2=32 experimental runs) was applied to optimize acid hydrolysis and study the interaction effects of acid hydrolysis factors, namely, acid concentration, solid fraction, temperature, and time. An optimization was carried out to optimize acid hydrolysis process variables so as to determine the best acid concentration, solid fraction, temperature, and contact time that resulted maximum ethanol yield. The screening of significant acid hydrolysis factors were done by using the two-level full factorial design using design expert® 7 software. The statistical analysis showed that the ethanol yield of (40.91% (g/g)) was obtained at optimised acid hydrolysis variables of 0.5%v/v acid concentration, 5%w/w solid fraction,105.01°C temperature, and 10 minutes hydrolysis time. Keywords: Prosopis juliflora, pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation, 2 level factorial, optimization.

Prosopis Juliflora and Pastoral Livelihood Diversification Strategy Book Review:

Pastoralists' livelihood was threatened by Prosopis invasion of farm and pastor land in the study area of Afar region. Thus, this research paper aimed to deliver empirical evidence on the links between household perception regarding Prosopis juliflora, and pastoral livelihood diversification strategy. Determinants were empirically analyzed using multinomial logit model (MLOGIT) and two step Tobit regression model (IVTOBIT). The results indicate that the household perception vary widely over the sample, showing a significant positive effect on their livelihood diversification. Even if the majority of households prefer to stay on livestock production, some sample households began crop production with increasing returns. A strong positive correlation between the household perception regarding the species and their livelihood diversification strategy as well as complementarities was revealed between crop and livestock production. Accordingly these suggest that perception of household that consider it as good and livelihood diversification is conducive for controlling species invasion, environmental and livelihood sustainability in the study area.
