Based on the theory and experiments developed in the first year's research work, the use of piezoelectric composites has been explored for application as large area structural composite material with built-in damping. Two parallel efforts have been carried out in this second year effort. One is to demonstrate piezoelectric composite damping using prototype macroscopic damping elements made from piezoelectric ceramic tubes available on the market, embedded in a polymer or fiber-reinforced polymer and shunted with external resistors. The other part of the effort is to fabricate fine fibers of PZT using sol-gel technology, with an eye toward future piezoelectric fiber-reinforced polymer composites. From these amorphous fibers, PZT fibers of 50-150 um diameter and length of up to 1 cm have been fabricated. After heat treatment at 700 deg C the fibers were fully crystallized in the perovskite structure.
