Penetration Tester s Open Source Toolkit Book Review:

Penetration Tester’s Open Source Toolkit, Third Edition, discusses the open source tools available to penetration testers, the ways to use them, and the situations in which they apply. Great commercial penetration testing tools can be very expensive and sometimes hard to use or of questionable accuracy. This book helps solve both of these problems. The open source, no-cost penetration testing tools presented do a great job and can be modified by the student for each situation. This edition offers instruction on how and in which situations the penetration tester can best use them. Real-life scenarios support and expand upon explanations throughout. It also presents core technologies for each type of testing and the best tools for the job. The book consists of 10 chapters that covers a wide range of topics such as reconnaissance; scanning and enumeration; client-side attacks and human weaknesses; hacking database services; Web server and Web application testing; enterprise application testing; wireless penetrating testing; and building penetration test labs. The chapters also include case studies where the tools that are discussed are applied. New to this edition: enterprise application testing, client-side attacks and updates on Metasploit and Backtrack. This book is for people who are interested in penetration testing or professionals engaged in penetration testing. Those working in the areas of database, network, system, or application administration, as well as architects, can gain insights into how penetration testers perform testing in their specific areas of expertise and learn what to expect from a penetration test. This book can also serve as a reference for security or audit professionals. Penetration Tester s Open Source Toolkit Book Review:

Penetration testing a network requires a delicate balance of art and science. A penetration tester must be creative enough to think outside of the box to determine the best attack vector into his own network, and also be expert in using the literally hundreds of tools required to execute the plan. This book provides both the art and the science. The authors of the book are expert penetration testers who have developed many of the leading pen testing tools; such as the Metasploit framework. The authors allow the reader “inside their heads to unravel the mysteries of thins like identifying targets, enumerating hosts, application fingerprinting, cracking passwords, and attacking exposed vulnerabilities. Along the way, the authors provide an invaluable reference to the hundreds of tools included on the bootable-Linux CD for penetration testing. * Covers both the methodology of penetration testing and all of the tools used by malicious hackers and penetration testers * The book is authored by many of the tool developers themselves * This is the only book that comes packaged with the "Auditor Security Collection"; a bootable Linux CD with over 300 of the most popular open source penetration testing tools

Metasploit Book Review:

"The Metasploit Framework makes discovering, exploiting, and sharing vulnerabilities quick and relatively painless. But while Metasploit is used by security professionals everywhere, documentation is lacking and the tool can be hard to grasp for first-time users. Metasploit: A Penetration Tester's Guide fills this gap by teaching you how to harness the Framework, use its many features, and interact with the vibrant community of Metasploit contributors. The authors begin by building a foundation for penetration testing and establishing a fundamental methodology. From there, they explain the Framework's conventions, interfaces, and module system, as they show you how to assess networks with Metasploit by launching simulated attacks. Having mastered the essentials, you'll move on to advanced penetration testing techniques, including network reconnaissance and enumeration, client-side attacks, devastating wireless attacks, and targeted social engineering attacks. Metasploit: A Penetration Tester's Guide willteach you how to: Find and exploit unmaintained, misconfigured, and unpatched systems Perform reconnaissance and find valuable information about your target Bypass anti-virus technologies and circumvent security controls Integrate Nmap, NeXpose, and Nessus with Metasploit to automate discovery Use the Meterpreter shell to launch further attacks from inside the network Harness standalone Metasploit utilities, third-party tools, and plug-ins Learn how to write your own Meterpreter post exploitation modules and scripts You'll even touch on exploit discovery for zero-day research, write a fuzzer, port existing exploits into the Framework, and learn how to cover your tracks. Whether your goal is to make your own networks more secure or to put someone else's to the test, Metasploit: A Penetration Tester's Guide will take you there and beyond"--

Penetration Tester s Open Source Toolkit Book Review:

Penetration testing is often considered an art as much as it is a science, but even an artist needs the right brushes to do the job well. Many commercial and open source tools exist for performing penetration testing, but it's often hard to ensure that you know what tools are available and which ones to use for a certain task. Through the next ten chapters, we'll be exploring the plethora of open source tools that are available to you as a penetration tester, how to use them, and in which situations they apply. Open source tools are pieces of software which are available with the source code so that the software can be modified and improved by other interested contributors. In most cases, this software comes with a license allowing for distribution of the modified software version with the requirement that the source code continue to be included with the distribution. In many cases, open source software becomes a community effort where dozens if not hundreds of people are actively contributing code and improvements to the software project. This type of project tends to result in a stronger and more valuable piece of software than what would often be developed by a single individual or small company. While commercial tools certainly exist in the penetration testing space, they're often expensive and, in some cases, too automated to be useful for all penetration testing scenarios. There are many common situations where the open source tools that we will be talking about fill a need better and (obviously) more cost effectively than any commercial tool. The tools that we will be discussing throughout this book are all open source and available for you to use in your work as a penetration tester

Metasploit Toolkit for Penetration Testing Exploit Development and Vulnerability Research Book Review:

Metasploit Toolkit for Penetration Testing, Exploit Development, and Vulnerability Research is the first book available for the Metasploit Framework (MSF), which is the attack platform of choice for one of the fastest growing careers in IT security: Penetration Testing. The book will provide professional penetration testers and security researchers with a fully integrated suite of tools for discovering, running, and testing exploit code. This book discusses how to use the Metasploit Framework (MSF) as an exploitation platform. The book begins with a detailed discussion of the three MSF interfaces: msfweb, msfconsole, and msfcli .This chapter demonstrates all of the features offered by the MSF as an exploitation platform. With a solid understanding of MSF’s capabilities, the book then details techniques for dramatically reducing the amount of time required for developing functional exploits. By working through a real-world vulnerabilities against popular closed source applications, the reader will learn how to use the tools and MSF to quickly build reliable attacks as standalone exploits. The section will also explain how to integrate an exploit directly into the Metasploit Framework by providing a line-by-line analysis of an integrated exploit module. Details as to how the Metasploit engine drives the behind-the-scenes exploitation process will be covered, and along the way the reader will come to understand the advantages of exploitation frameworks. The final section of the book examines the Meterpreter payload system and teaches readers to develop completely new extensions that will integrate fluidly with the Metasploit Framework. A November 2004 survey conducted by "CSO Magazine" stated that 42% of chief security officers considered penetration testing to be a security priority for their organizations The Metasploit Framework is the most popular open source exploit platform, and there are no competing books
