Tropical and Extratropical Air Sea Interactions Book Review:

Tropical and Extratropical Air-Sea Interactions: Modes of Climate Variations provides a thorough introduction to global atmospheric and oceanic processes, as well as tropical, subtropical and mid-latitude ocean-atmosphere interactions. Written by leading experts in the field, each chapter is dedicated to a specific topic of air-sea interactions (such as ENSO, IOD, Atlantic Nino, ENSO Modoki, and newly discovered coastal Niños/Niñas) and their teleconnections. As the first book to cover all topics of tropical and extra-tropical air-sea interactions and new modes of climate variations, this book is an excellent resource for researchers and students of ocean, atmospheric and climate sciences. Presents case studies on the ocean-atmosphere phenomena, including El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole and different Nino/Nina phenomena Provides a clear description of air-sea relationships across the world’s ocean with an analysis of air-sea relations in different time scales and a focus on climate change Includes prospects for air-sea interaction research, thus benefiting young researchers and students

Indian Summer Monsoon Variability Book Review:

Indian Summer Monsoon Variability: El Niño-Teleconnections and Beyond presents the improved understanding of Indian Monsoon teleconnections (ENSO and Non-ENSO), new advances, and preferred future steps. Special emphasis is given to non-ENSO teleconnections which have been poorly understood for decades. With growing monsoon rainfall extremes across the Indian Subcontinent, a new understanding of monsoon environmental factors that are driven remotely through teleconnections is a trending topic. Finally, the book reviews current understanding of the observational and modeling aspects of Indian monsoon teleconnections. This is a must-read for researchers and graduate students in atmospheric science and meteorology. Presents teleconnections associated with the Indian summer monsoon from a global perspective Discusses new pathways that connect the remote drivers to Indian summer monsoon variability Covers a wide range of mechanisms, processes, and science questions in relation to monsoon variability from interannual, decadal to climate change time scales

East Asian Monsoon Book Review:

The East Asian summer monsoon has complex space and time structures that are distinct from the South Asian summer monsoon. It covers both subtropics and midlatitudes and its rainfall tends to be concentrated in rain belts that stretch for many thousands of kilometers and affect China, Japan, Korea, and the surrounding areas. The circulation of the East Asian winter monsoon encompasses a large meridional domain with cold air outbreaks emanating from the Siberian high and penetrates deeply into the equatorial Maritime Continent region, where the center of maximum rainfall has long been recognized as a major planetary scale heat source that provides a significant amount of energy which drives the global circulation during boreal winter. The East Asian summer monsoon is also closely linked with the West Pacific summer monsoon. Both are part of the global climate system and are affected by El Nino?Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and surface temperature variations in the western Pacific and surrounding oceans, the tropospheric biennial oscillation, and the South Asian summer monsoon. In addition, typhoons in the western North Pacific are most active during the East Asian summer monsoon. They may be considered as a component of the East Asian summer monsoon as they contribute substantial amounts of rainfall and have major impacts on the region.Because of its impacts on nearly one-third of the world's population and on the global climate system (including effects on the climate change), the study of the East Asian monsoon has received increased attention both in East Asian countries and in the United States. This book presents reviews of recent research on the subject.

Climate Dynamics Book Review:

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of theGeophysical Monograph Series, Volume 189. Climate Dynamics: Why Does Climate Vary? presents the majorclimate phenomena within the climate system to underscore thepotency of dynamics in giving rise to climate change andvariability. These phenomena include deep convection over theIndo-Pacific warm pool and its planetary-scale organization: theMadden-Julian Oscillation, the monsoons, the El Niño-SouthernOscillation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the low-frequencyvariability of extratropical circulations. The volume also has achapter focusing on the discussion of the causes of the recentmelting of Arctic sea ice and a chapter devoted to the discussionof the causes of recent changes in the frequency and intensity oftropical cyclones. On each topic, the basic material of climatedynamics is covered to aid the understanding of the forefrontresearch, making the volume accessible to a broad spectrum ofreaders. The volume highlights include Diabatic and nonlinear aspects of the El Niño-SouthernOscillation Causes of sea ice melting in the Arctic Impact of global warming on tropical cyclone activity Origins of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation Causes of climate variability of Asian monsoons The volume will be of particular interest to graduate studentsand young researchers in atmospheric and oceanic sciences andrelated disciplines such as geology and geography. The book willalso be a good read for those who have a more general interest inthe Earth's climate and why it varies.

Global Environmental Change Book Review:

How can we understand and rise to the environmental challenges of global change? One clear answer is to understand the science of global change, not solely in terms of the processes that control changes in climate and the composition of the atmosphere, but in how ecosystems and human society interact with these changes. In the last two decades of the twentieth century, a number of such research efforts--supported by computer and satellite technology--have been launched. Yet many opportunities for integration remain unexploited, and many fundamental questions remain about the earth's capacity to support a growing human population. This volume encourages a renewed commitment to understanding global change and sets a direction for research in the decade ahead. Through case studies the book explores what can be learned from the lessons of the past 20 years and what are the outstanding scientific questions. Highlights include: Research imperatives and strategies for investigators in the areas of atmospheric chemistry, climate, ecosystem studies, and human dimensions of global change. The context of climate change, including lessons to be gleaned from paleoclimatology. Human responses to--and forcing of--projected global change. This book offers a comprehensive overview of global change research to date and provides a framework for answering urgent questions.

Integrative Study of the Mean Sea Level and Its Components Book Review:

This volume presents the most recent results of global mean sea level variations over the satellite altimetry era (starting in the early 1990s) and associated contributions, such as glaciers and ice sheets mass loss, ocean thermal expansion, and land water storage changes. Sea level is one of the best indicators of global climate changes as it integrates the response of several components of the climate system to external forcing factors (including anthropogenic forcing) and internal climate variability. Providing long, accurate records of the sea level at global and regional scales and of the various components causing sea level changes is of crucial importance to improve our understanding of climate processes at work and to validate the climate models used for future projections. The Climate Change Initiative project of the European Space Agency has provided a first attempt to produce consistent and continuous space-based records for several climate parameters observable from space, among them sea level. This book presents current knowledge of the sea level budget over the altimetry era and 20th century. Previously published in Surveys in Geophysics, Volume 38, Issue 1, 2017

Selected Papers of the Fourth Conference on East Asia and Western Pacific Meteorology and Climate Book Review:

This volume is a collection of selected papers of the Fourth Conference on East Asian and Western Pacific meteorology and climate. It covers remote sensing, atmospheric physics and chemistry, and the impact of aircraft emissions on atmospheric composition, as well as traditional topics like typhoons, rainstorms, monsoons and climate. In July 1989 the first conference in this series took place in Hong Kong. It was run with the innovative bilingual approach, which allowed both Chinese- and English-speaking scientists from various regious of East Asia and across the Pacific to come together, and share and discuss their research. It also proved to be an invaluable networking opportunity leading to a rapid growth of interaction and cooperation among a diverse group of scientists in the decade that followed. The breadth and depth of the presentations at the Fourth Conference was a testimony to the coming of age of this series of conferences, marking the tenth anniversary of an endeavor that had a modest beginning.
