The Start of the Journey Book Review:

This autobiography of my life starts on the island of my birth, Jamaica, in 1962. At a young age, my father left my mother, my brother, and myself. He returned months later and illegally took me away at the age of three to live with his mistress and their unborn child. So begins The Start of the Journey: Part One of an Autobiography, a wrenching tale of my inner survival. The experiences and challenges I endured as a child empowered me for this time in my life, for I finally found the peace within me to share my story with others. I have found forgiveness, love, and respect for myself and others who were in our family circle. I cannot change my past, I can only learn and look forward to my future. I am now a stronger person who is no longer vulnerable, I have been empowered; my adversities have all been transformed into triumphs. Sandra Ward-Cooper left Jamaica for Toronto and now lives in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. She is an educator and a married mother of four children. American Airlines, US Airways and the Creation of the Worldäó»s Largest Airline Book Review:

The 2013 merger of American Airlines and US Airways marked a major step in the consolidation of the U.S. airline industry. A young management team that began plotting mergers a decade earlier designed a brilliant strategy to seize an industry prize. In doing so, it enlisted the help of unions who engineered one of the labor movement’s biggest corporate victories. The airlines’ histories and the inside story of the takeover is told by two veteran airline reporters.

The Development of Propulsion Technology for U.S. Space-launch Vehicles Book Review:

In this definitive study, J. D. Hunley traces launch-vehicle technology from Goddard's early rockets through the Titan IVA and the Space Shuttle, with a focus on space-launch vehicles. Focusing especially on the engineering culture of the program, Hunley communicates the very human side of technological development by means of anecdotes, character sketches, and case studies of problems faced by rocket engineers. He shows how such a highly adaptive approach enabled the evolution of a hugely complicated technology that was impressive--but decidedly not rocket science.

A Concise History of the U. S. Air Force Book Review:

Except in a few instances, since World War II no American soldier or sailor has been attacked by enemy air power. Conversely, no enemy soldier or sailor has acted in combat without being attacked or at least threatened by American air power. Aviators have brought the air weapon to bear against enemies while denying them the same prerogative. This is the legacy of the U.S. Air Force, purchased at great cost in both human and material resources. More often than not, aerial pioneers had to fight technological ignorance, bureaucratic opposition, public apathy, and disagreement over purpose. Every step in the evolution of air power led into new and untrodden territory, driven by humanitarian impulses; by the search for higher, faster, and farther flight; or by the conviction that the air way was the best way. Warriors have always coveted the high ground. If technology permitted them to reach it, men, women, and an Air Force held and exploited it -- from Thomas Selfridge, first among so many who gave that "last full measure of devotion"; to Women's Air Force Service Pilot Ann Baumgartner, who broke social barriers to become the first American woman to pilot a jet; to Benjamin Davis, who broke racial barriers to become the first African American to command a flying group; to Chuck Yeager, a one-time noncommissioned flight officer who was the first to exceed the speed of sound; to John Warden, who began a revolution in air power thought and strategy that was put to spectacular use in the Gulf War. This book provides a short history of military air power in the United States from the Civil War to the Persian Gulf War. Chapters are as follows: The Genesis of American Air Power; Trial and Error in World War I; Interwar Doctrine, Organization, and Technology; World War II -- Global Conflict; Air Power in the Nuclear Age; Limited War in Korea; The "New Look" Air Force; Flexible Response and Vietnam; The Cold War Concluded; Air Power Triumphant -- The Gulf War; and The Future7.

The United States and the Armed Forces of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, 2000Ð2014 Book Review:

Tracing the U.S. government's efforts to shape the armed forces of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean from 2000 to 2014, this narrative concentrates on the Army but also discusses Air Force and naval forces, including the Marines and the Coast Guard. Police forces in those regions are also covered. Mexico's ongoing struggle with drug cartels is discussed extensively. Venezuela and Cuba receive considerable attention. This study is the first to examine in detail the armed forces of countries such as the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Sections on Haiti and Panama, countries supposedly without armies, reveal the decisive role the U.S. has played in determining their military policies. The text weaves the histories of these armed forces into the broader context of the politics, economics and international relations in the region. A clear and brief introduction to the relations of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean with the United States is provided.

The Effects of U.S. Unconventional Monetary Policy on Asia Frontier Developing Economies Book Review:

This paper explores the effect of U.S. unconventional monetary policy (QE2) on a group of frontier developing economies (FDEs) in Asia. This paper finds that spillovers emanating from the U.S. on FDEs in Asia have been small. The relative insulation of emerging Asia from the global financial cycle can likely be attributed to the presence of managed capital accounts coupled with shallow financial markets. Should U.S. monetary policy begin to normalize the direct first-round impact on developing Asia is likely to be small.

A History of US: War, Peace, and All That Jazz Book Review:

Recommended by the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy as an exemplary informational text. From woman's suffrage to Babe Ruth's home runs, from Louis Armstrong's jazz to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's four presidential terms, from the finale of one world war to the dramatic close of the second, War, Peace, and All That Jazz presents the story of some of the most exciting years in U.S. history. With the end of World War I, many Americans decided to live it up, going to movies, driving cars, and cheering baseball games a plenty. But alongside this post WWI spree was high unemployment, hard times for farmers, ever present racism, and, finally, the Depression, the worst economic disaster in U.S. history, flip flopping the nation from prosperity to scarcity. Along came one of our country's greatest leaders, F.D.R., who promised a New Deal, gave Americans hope, and then saw them through the horrors and victories of World War II. These three decades full of optimism and despair, progress and Depression, and, of course, War, Peace, and All That Jazz forever changed the United States. About the Series: Master storyteller Joy Hakim has excited millions of young minds with the great drama of American history in her award-winning series A History of US. The Kurds and US Foreign Policy Book Review:

This book provides a detailed survey and analysis of US–Kurdish relations and their interaction with domestic, regional and global politics. Using the Kurdish issue to explore the nature of the engagement between international powers and weaker non-state entities, the author analyses the existence of an interactive US relationship with the Kurds of Iraq. Drawing on governmental archives and interviews with political figures both in Northern Iraq and the United States, the author places the case study within a broader International Relations context. The conceptual framework centres on the inter-relations between actors (both state and non-state) and structures of material and ideational kinds, while the detailed survey and analysis of US–Kurdish relations, in their interaction with domestic, regional and global politics, forms the empirical core of the study. Stressing the intertwining of domestic and foreign policy as part of the same set of dynamics, the case study explains the emergence of the interactive and institutionalized US relationship with the Kurds of Iraq that has brought about the formation, within an Iraqi framework, of an undeclared US official Kurdish policy in the post-Saddam era. Filling a gap in the literature on US–Kurdish relations as well as the broader topic of International Relations, this book will be of great interest to those in the areas of International Relations, Middle Eastern and Kurdish Politics.

Cold War 2: The Start of a New Conflict - Russia's Hand in Ukraine Book Review:

In recent times, United States and Russia have had much to squabble over. However, between the Russian occupation of Crimea, the U.S. sanctions that followed, as well as granting Edward Snowden asylum; Russia’s and the United States leadership is threatening to finally push these old foes to full blown conflict – the Second Cold War. Since the end of the Cold War in the early 90s, following the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the palpable international tension as well as the stark political and economic chasm that separated the two main blocs has slowly disappeared. Nonetheless, the perpetual conflict between the United States and the Russian Federation continues to be expressed in subtle ways. Although these two nations have sometimes been forced to forgo their conflict and collaborate to ensure mutual prosperity and international security, their association has generally been met with cynical apprehension.
