The Setup Book Review:

The pitch went like this: Chris Butler, a retired cop, ran a private investigator firm in Concord, California. His business had a fascinating angle—his firm was staffed entirely by soccer moms. In fact, Butler employed PI Super Moms: attractive, organized, smart, and trained in investigative techniques, self-defense, and weaponry. This American Life host Ira Glass described them as “MILF: Charlie's Angels." When this story came across Pete Crooks's desk when he was working at Diablo magazine in 2010, he was instantly hooked. He'd heard a little bit about Butler and his super moms in the news; they'd been featured in People magazine and on Dr. Phil. What Butler's publicist was offering was too tantalizing to pass up: an opportunity to ride along with Butler and a few of his sexy PIs as they prepared to start filming a reality TV show. But after the ride-along—and after he started receiving mysterious emails from one of Butler's employees—Crooks started to realize something didn't seem right. After doing a little digging, he discovered the “sting" he'd seen only had one real victim…him. The PI bust had been a setup. Crooks wasn't a hardboiled crime reporter. He did lifestyle pieces for a regional magazine. The more he learned about Butler's operation, the more he realized he was in far over his head. But swallowing his fears, he decided he was going to write an expose on Butler and his entire organization. He soon found himself deep in the underbelly of fake sting operations, wannabe celebrities, police corruption, drug-dealing, reality television, double-crossing employees, and more twists and turns than a dozen crime thrillers.

The Setup Book Review:

What I write in this book is an expose of NSA and CIA spy operations. Read how a UBS employee got caught up in an expose of NSA domestic spying that led to either riches or jail. Tells the story of being mistaken for a CIA agent. After getting mistaken for a rogue CIA agent, he got setup, and nearly killed but escaped the spy and police dragnet. Alarmed at offers of $200,000 per year and not wanting to accept the offers for fear of them being another setup, he ignored, ""An offer he couldn't refuse."" When he turned down double the last offer, he got sent home in California by the U.S. Embassy. Another UBS employee Christopher Meilli exposed theft of Holocaust survivors money and deposit records. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Mr. Meilli was asked about moneylaundering in the belief he was me and that I had flown from Tokyo to Zurich and infiltrated UBS security to get the goods on them. Check out the memoir that got used by a 20th Century Fox production that won award and millions.

From the author of The Summer Job comes a laugh-out-loud, heartwarming story about one woman’s impulsive fib that jump starts a summer of reinvention and learning about love, life, and what it means to accept yourself. She has a plan. Fate has other ideas. The last place very average thirty-one-year-old Mara Williams thought she’d be is on a solo vacation impersonating her fortune teller when she finally meets the one. Josef, a gorgeous Austrian cellist, sits down for a reading and before she knows it, she’s telling him his destiny will be sitting in a pub in the English seaside town of Broadgate on the last Friday of August. And her name is Mara. Enter Project Mara: three months to turn herself into the stylish, confident woman she’s always hoped to be. Meanwhile, the crumbling, formerly glamorous beachside pool club where she works is under threat and her eccentric colleagues enlist her help to save it, just as a handsome new housemate casts doubts on her ideas about “the one.” Can Mara pull off the transformation of a lifetime? The Setup Man Book Review:

“A throwback Southern California mystery in modern pinstripes . . . A treat for readers of mystery or baseball novels.” —KIRKUS REVIEWS Johnny Adcock is an aging Major League pitcher with the perfect retirement plan—he moonlights as a private investigator. Major League Baseball, as it turns out, is a prime source of employment for a philosophically inclined, discreet detective who has both the brains and the brawn to handle the unique problems of professional athletes. Those infamous baseball salaries attract gangsters, hustlers, and predators of every persuasion who prey on the outsized egos of primetime stars. When players, coaches, agents, or wives have a problem they can't make public, they call Johnny Adcock. On the team bus after a game, teammate Frankie Herrera confides in Adcock that he has a “problem with his wife.” What sounds like the standard story of a pro athlete's marriage gone sour quickly turns into the most dangerous case of Adcock's second career when Frankie is killed in a car accident, leaving far too many questions unanswered. The investigation takes Adcock into uncharted territory, drawing him into a deadly ring of murder, porn, Mexican cartels, and a conspiracy that threatens to become the biggest scandal to hit baseball since HGH and steroids. A new heavy hitter on the thriller scene, T. T. Monday takes readers inside a rich and highly entertaining world where crime and baseball intersect and delivers a debut that moves like a 96-mile-an-hour fastball. From the Hardcover edition.

The Setup Memoirs of an NSA Security Operation Second Edition Book Review:

Read the true story of the UBS whistleblower in his own words. Now available in the edited version of The Setup, 2nd Edition that has earned mostly 5-star ratings. This new edit tells an amazingly true story of how an English Teacher who went to Japan got caught up in a spy operation to test the Japanese security services. In an expose of a real life spy operation, the author tells the cerebral aspects of spy work. After making new "friends", he was told that UBS was laundering money and keeping two sets of books. Told to report it, he got setup to go to jail, fired, blacklisted; nearly killed and sent to his hometown in the USA broke. When a $200,000 a year job offer didn't work, they doubled the last offer. The risks were too much and Michael turned down "a job he can't refuse." So he got sent home to California. This is the Michael character that Fox Television Studios used to create Burn Notice.

It s a Setup Book Review:

"The norms and expectations of father involvement have changed rapidly within one to two generations. Socially and economically marginalized fathers are being exposed to these messages through popular culture and the media, in state welfare, child protection, prisons, and probation offices, as well as in child support and family courts. Moreover, they are being told that it is up to them to make better choices, to get themselves together, and to be involved fathers. Based on life history interviews with 138 low-income fathers, Black and Keyes show that fathers have internalized these messages and sound determined. After all, there is social worth in fatherhood, hope for creating meaningful lives or new beginnings, the fantasy of leaving something of value behind in the world, and a stake in resisting stigmatizing labels like the deadbeat dad. Most will, however, fall short for several reasons: first, while the expectations for father involvement were increasing, state and economic support for low income families was decreasing; second, vulnerable fathers often lack viable models to guide them; third, living in dangerous neighborhoods compromises fatherhood and leaves fathers at odds with dominant institutional narratives about being nurturing fathers, and fourth, the dark side of poverty, inscribed on bodies and minds, leaves some struggling with childhood traumas and unhealthy routines to mitigate or numb these painful developmental disruptions. Consequently, the authors assert that without transformative economic, political and social change that would facilitate and support engaged and nurturing fatherhood, these fathers are being "set-up.""--

I've fallen victim to a heinous act. An act so vile, so downright dirty, that I'm not sure as a twenty-year-old man I'll ever recover. Brace yourself, because what I'm about to tell you might have you gasping in secondhand horror.Ready? Here it goes . . .I've recently become the pawn of a meddling mom.Yes . . . A MEDDLING MOM--who's been trying to set me up all summer. Now, I understand it's not a crime for a mother to want her child to fall in love, but when she makes it her relentless MISSION, the heinous act should be classified as a misdemeanor at least.Of course, my mom, the evil matriarch in the devil's leggings, made her final stab at finding a girl for me days before I went back to college. And I hate to admit it, but she saved a doozy for last. A titan in black skinny jeans. A boss of nonchalance. And a girl who would not only turn my life upside down, but do it while juggling a soccer ball, looking effortlessly gorgeous around campus, and is one hundred percent against relationships. Of any sort. Thanks, Mom.

The Setup Book Review:

The first day she was sitting by herself - I felt sorry for her. After all, it couldn't be easy wrangling all the testosterone at Wingmen Inc as one of the only female office managers. The second day she literally counted her carrots during break - she had seven by the way, right along with seven sips of her drink in between taking seven tiny little bites of the first carrot. Now I'm not one to brag, or maybe I am, but math and science fascinate me, so do problems. And this woman screamed puzzle from the way she ducked her head every time anyone looked at her, to the way she counted food and tapped the table when she didn't think anyone was watching. I'd like to think I took pity on her that day when, in fact, she was the one that took pity on me and asked if I needed a friend. She assumed I had a learning disability since I'd been staring so damn hard. Things would have ended there, except, my bosses need someone to test the new Wingmen App and since I was the only single guy on the floor - I was nominated, right along with the only single woman, the same one who thinks I need to use my fingers to count. Apparently rumors of my sexcapades throughout college reached even her ears, because she wants nothing to do with me, which makes beta testing a bitch. I have thirty days to win her over and prove myself to my bosses. One thing's for certain, I'm going to have to buy a hell of a lot of carrots.
