Radiance is a decopunk pulp SF alt-history space opera mystery set in a Hollywood-and solar system-very different from our own, from Catherynne M. Severin Unck's father is a famous director of Gothic romances in an alternate 1986 in which talking movies are still a daring innovation due to the patent-hoarding Edison family. Rebelling against her father's films of passion, intrigue, and spirits from beyond, Severin starts making documentaries, traveling through space and investigating the levitator cults of Neptune and the lawless saloons of Mars. How it happened that technological prowess and national glory (or “radiance,” which also means “radiation” in French) became synonymous in France as nowhere else. In the aftermath of World War II, as France sought a distinctive role for itself in the modern, postcolonial world, the nation and its leaders enthusiastically embraced large technological projects in general and nuclear power in particular. The Radiance of France asks how it happened that technological prowess and national glory (or “radiance,” which also means “radiation” in French) became synonymous in France as nowhere else. To answer this question, Gabrielle Hecht has forged an innovative combination of technology studies and cultural and political history in a book that, as Michel Callon writes in the new foreword to this edition, “not only sheds new light on the role of technology in the construction of national identities” but is also “a seminal contribution to the history of contemporary France.” Proposing the concept of technopolitical regime as a way to analyze the social, political, cultural, and technological dynamics among engineering elites, unionized workers, and rural communities, Hecht shows how the history of France's first generation of nuclear reactors is also a history of the multiple meanings of nationalism, from the postwar period (and France's desire for post-Vichy redemption) to 1969 and the adoption of a “Frenchified” American design. This paperback edition of Hecht's groundbreaking book includes both Callon's foreword and an afterword by the author in which she brings the story up to date, and reflects on such recent developments as the 2007 French presidential election, the promotion of nuclear power as the solution to climate change, and France's aggressive exporting of nuclear technology.

Chinul (1158–1210) was the founder of the Korean tradition of Zen. Data concerning the spatial and temporal inhomogenities of atmospheric density and composition and their implication concerning the atmospheric infrared radiance are reviewed. Preliminary estimates of the variability in the radiance are presented. In addition, the range of scale sizes from small-scale variations is also considered.

The smoke concentration within the primary zone of an experimental combustor operating at pressures up to 20 atmospheres was determined with a technique using spectral radiance measurements. Exhaust smoke concentration was obtained from reflectance readings of stained filter paper. The primary zone smoke concentration was of the order of 100 to 1000 times greater than at the exhaust. The smoke oxidation rate obtained is compared with reported values for coal particles and seeded laboratory flames. Primary zone smoke concentration was shown to be related to exhaust smoke number and total radiance.

Jasmuheen's sixteenth book, ‘DIVINE RADIANCE : On the Road with the Masters of Magic’, describes her life with, and the modern day teachings of, these amazing beings. She writes: Somehow in the course of my life I have been blessed with both witnessing and experiencing pure Divine Radiance. When the Radiance reveals Itself we are captured by Its Splendor as we intuitively recognize Its power. It has taken me decades to discover how when Its illumination enters our energy field, our bodies become irradiated by a laser beam of such perfect sustenance that all our appetites are fulfilled. This book is my attempt to describe Its delights.

A satellite experiment has obtained nadir-viewing atmospheric radiance measurements in the 1100 to 2900 angstrom wavelength region from the polar orbiting satellite S3-4. This report describes the instrumentation, measurement techniques, and initial results. The observed emission is from airglow, solar scatter, and auroral regions. Spectral and spatial measurements previously unavailable have been made for the nitrogen Lyman-Birge-Hopfield emission, vacuum ultraviolet aurora, hydrogen geocorona, tropical ultraviolet airglow, twilight fluorescence nitric oxide spectrum, and night oxygen Herzberg band emission. Low values of the day and night background radiance values have been found; these values can be applied to improved missile detection techniques. Spatial resolution down to about one kilometer will enable possible variability to be sought. Observations were made in the period March to September 1978. Correlations with other geophysical factors such as solar flux, magnetic index, and seasonal variations will be made after the data base from the experiment is completed.
