Four Leagues of Pecos Book Review:

Land grant disputes from the nineteenth century have divided and embittered some people for most of the twentieth century. In an attempt to bring final resolution to lingering controversies in New Mexico and throughout the West, in 2000 the U.S. Congress pledged to review disputed claims in the next few years. The Pecos Grant is illustrative of legal and administrative wrangling over land grants. To ensure that a U.S. Senate Committee understood the complexity of the Pecos Grant, New Mexico lawyer and historian Ralph Emerson Twitchell told them in 1923: "There are so many things in connection with this entire business that twenty King Solomons cannot unravel the knot." Yet in this book Hall does sort through the conflicting claims in the over one hundred years of Spanish, Mexican, and American legal maneuvers, legislative stalemates, and private sales involving this 18,000 acre square of land.

Colorado Warbird Survivors 2001 Book Review:

The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple checklist on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft that are preserved in the state of Colorado. The majority of the “Colorado Warbird Survivors” can be viewed at the Pueblo Weisbrod Air Museum, the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver, on the grounds of Buckley Air Force Base in Denver, on the grounds of the Peterson Air and Space Museum and on the grounds of the United States Air Force Academy, both located in Colorado Springs. Various “gate guards” in various cities in the state are also listed. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations in Colorado have done a particularly good job of preserving the great variety of American combat veteran aircraft, illustrated here. Hopefully, as more aircraft are recovered from their crash sites in the bush and restored, traded or brought back from private owners, that they too will be added to the record. The book lists the aircraft alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. This list is also appended with a brief summary of the aircraft presently on display within the state and a bit of its history in the US military.

Canadian Warbird & War Prize Survivors Book Review:

The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a handbook on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft preserved in Canada. The majority of the Canadian Warbird and War Prize Survivors are on display within a significant number of aviation museums. Many others are displayed as "gate guards" on or near a number of Canadian and Allied Armed Forces Bases and installations. There are also a few in the hands of private owners and collectors that have been restored to flying status. These include a number of foreign warbird survivors that were brought back to Canada as War Prizes. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations such as the Canadian Aviation Preservation Association (CAPA) have done tremendous work in preserving military and civilian aircraft that have been a major part of Canada's aviation heritage. A few of these aircraft are illustrated in this book, along with a short description of the aircraft flown by Canadian servicemen and women. The aircraft are listed alphabetically, along with a city or museum location, the manufacturer, aircraft serial number and call sign where known. Laguna Pueblo Book Review:

The distinguished American Indian photographer Lee Marmon has documented over sixty years of Laguna history: its people, customs, and cultural changes. Here more than one hundred of Marmon’s photos showcase his talents while highlighting the cohesive, adaptive, and independent character of the Laguna people. Along with Marmon’s own oral history of the tribe and his family photos dating back to 1872, Tom Corbett presents archival images and historical research, making this the most complete published history of any southwestern pueblo. Marmon and Corbett also interviewed noted tribal elders and oral historians regarding customs, religious practices, and events of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The resulting narrative provides a fascinating story of survival through severe natural and man-made adversities, including droughts, plagues, marauding tribes, and cultural invasion. Through it all, Laguna has preserved its culture and retained sovereign powers over the pueblo and its territory.

Food, Diet, and Population at Prehistoric Arroyo Hondo Pueblo, New Mexico Book Review:

"This book--sixth in the Arroyo Hondo Archaeological Series--examines the uses of wild and domesticated plants at Arroyo Hondo Pueblo, a large, fourteenth-century ruin near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Ethnobotanist Wilma Wetterstrom describes the food plant remains found at the site and estimates the potential harvest of each food resource. Then, in two closely argued chapters, she demonstrates how years of drought would have caused food shortages for Arroyo Hondo's substantial population, resulting in migration as well as malnutrition and higher death rates among young children. In two additional reports, Vorsila L. Bohrer offers information from the analysis of pollen samples, and Richard W. Lang describes artifacts such as mats and baskets made from vegetal materials"--Back cover.

Oregon Warbird Survivors 2003 Book Review:

Some of the finest military warbirds in American aviation history are still flying in the West Coast State of Oregon. Many of them are on display in a number of excellent air museums, or they have been mounted on pylons to stand as memorials to the many military aviators who called Oregon home. This handbook is designed to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple locating guide on where to find a good number of these incredible flying machines within the state. Many of the aircraft can be found in the Tillamook Naval Air Station Museum; the Evergreen Aviation Museum at McMinnville; in the Oregon Air & Space Museum at Eugene; with the Oregon Military Museum at Clackmas; or in the hands of private owners and collectors. The handbook provides photographs of many of the aircraft preserved in Oregon, along with a brief description and history of its service within the US armed forces. The aircraft are listed alphabetically by manufacturer, number and aircraft type. Famous aircraft found on display in Oregon include the gigantic Hughes HK-1 Flying Boat (also known as the Spruce Goose), and a number of very rare warbirds not found in many other museums.

Pueblo Peoples on the Pajarito Plateau Book Review:

This lively overview of the archaeology of northern New Mexico's Pajarito Plateau argues that Bandelier National Monument and the Pajarito Plateau became the Southwest's most densely populated and important upland ecological preserve when the great regional society centered on Chaco Canyon collapsed in the twelfth century. Some of Chaco's survivors moved southeast to the then thinly populated Pajarito Plateau, where they were able to survive by fundamentally refashioning their society. David E. Stuart, an anthropologist/archaeologist known for his stimulating overviews of prehistoric settlement and subsistence data, argues here that this re-creation of ancestral Puebloan society required a fundamental rebalancing of the Chacoan model. Where Chaco was based on growth, grandeur, and stratification, the socioeconomic structure of Bandelier was characterized by efficiency, moderation, and practicality. Although Stuart's focus is on the archaeology of Bandelier and the surrounding area, his attention to events that predate those sites by several centuries and at substantial distances from the modern monument is instructive. Beginning with Paleo-Indian hunter-gatherers and ending with the large villages and great craftsmen of the mid-sixteenth century, Stuart presents Bandelier as a society that, in crisis, relearned from its pre-Chacoan predecessors how to survive through creative efficiencies. Illustrated with previously unpublished maps supported by the most recent survey data, this book is indispensable for anyone interested in southwestern archaeology.
