The unprecedented volume of data acquired from sensors, derived by simulations and data analysis processes, accumulated in warehouses, and often shared on the Web, has given risetoanew?eldofresearch: provenancemanagement.Provenance(alsoreferred to as audit trail, lineage, and pedigree) captures information about the steps used to generate a given data product. Such information provides important documentation that is key to preserving data, to determining the data's quality and authorship, to understanding, reproducing, as well as validating results. Provenancemanagement has become an active ?eld of research, as evidenced byrecentspecializedworkshops, surveys, andtutorials.Provenancesolutionsare needed in many di?erent domains and applications, from environmental science and physics simulations, to business processes and data integration in wa- houses. Not surprisingly, di?erent techniques and provenance models have been proposed in many areas such as work?ow systems, visualization, databases, d- ital libraries, and knowledge representation. An important challenge we face - dayishowtointegratethesetechniquesandmodelssothatcompleteprovenance can be derived for complex data products. The InternationalProvenanceand AnnotationWorkshop(IPAW 2008)wasa follow-up to previous workshopsin Chigago (2006, 2002)and Edinburgh (2003). It was held during June 17-18, in Salt Lake City, at the University of Utah campus. IPAW 2008 brought together computer scientists from di?erent areas and provenance users to discuss open problems related to the provenance of computational and non-computational artifacts. A total of 55 people attended the workshop.

A survey of previous literature about the provenance of the song in Deuteronomy 32 and a discussion of its text and poetic structure. The author concludes that the song dates from the pre-exilic period.

The 7 revised full papers, 11 revised medium-length papers, 6 revised short, and 7 demo papers presented together with 10 poster/abstract papers describing late-breaking work were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. Thus, many disciplines have proposed a wide range of provenance models, techniques, and infrastructure for encoding and using provenance. The papers investigate many facets of data provenance, process documentation, data derivation, and data annotation.

This book covers important aspects of fundamental research in data provenance and data management(DPDM), including provenance representation and querying, as well as practical applications in such domains as clinical trials, bioinformatics and radio astronomy.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Provenance and Annotation Workshop, IPAW 2016, held in McLean, VA, USA, in June 2016. This book constitutes the revised selected papers of the 5th International Provenance and Annotation Workshop, IPAW 2014, held in Cologne, Germany in June 2014. The 14 long papers, 20 short papers and 4 extended abstracts presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 53 submissions. This book constitutes the proceedings of the 8th and 9th International Provenance and Annotation Workshop, IPAW 2020 and IPAW 2021 which were held as part of ProvenanceWeek in 2020 and 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, PropvenanceWeek 2020 was held as a 1-day virtual event with brief teaser talks on June 22, 2020. In 2021, the conference was held virtually during July 19-22, 2021. The 11 full papers and 12 posters and system demonstrations included in these proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 31 submissions. They were organized in the following topical sections: provenance capture and representation; security; provenance types, inference, queries and summarization; reliability and trustworthiness; joint IPAW/TaPP poster and demonstration session.

As the Web allows information sharing, discovery, aggregation, filtering and flow in an unprecedented manner, it also becomes very difficult to identify, reliably, the original source that produced an information item on the Web. Hence, provenance, i.e., the origin or source of something, is becoming an important concern, since it offers the means to verify data products, to infer their quality, to analyse the processes that led to them, and to decide whether they can be trusted. For instance, provenance enables the reproducibility of scientific results; provenance is necessary to track attribution and credit in curated databases; and, it is essential for reasoners to make trust judgements about the information they use over the Semantic Web. Since the emerging use of provenance in niche applications is undoubtedly demonstrating benefits, this survey contends that provenance can and should reliably be tracked and exploited on the Web. The Foundations for Provenance on the Web is aimed at anyone who discovers or publishes information on the Web, and who cares about its origin and its quality.Based on an analysis of literature, this survey puts forward the Open Provenance Vision, a visionary but pragmatic, integrative conceptual framework allowing the provenance of information to be expressed, tracked, and queried seamlessly, as it crosses information systems across the Web. Some foundational work has already resulted in significant advances in semantics, data models and systems, which can underpin this vision. However, some shortcomings inevitably exist and are discussed. For this vision to succeed, it requires a multi-disciplinary approach, since it requires contributions from many computer science sub-disciplines, but also other non technical fields given the human challenge that is anticipated.

Sediment Provenance: Influences on Compositional Change from Source to Sink provides a thorough and inclusive overview that features data-based case studies on a broad range of dynamic aspects in sedimentary rock structure and deposition. Remnants of early films often have a story to tell. As material artifacts, these film fragments are central to cinema history, perhaps more than ever in our digital age of easy copying and sharing. If a digital copy is previewed before preservation or is shared with a researcher outside the purview of a film archive, knowledge about how the artifact was collected, circulated, and repurposed threatens to become obscured. When the question of origin is overlooked, the story can be lost. Concerned contributors in Provenance and Early Cinema challenge scholars digging through film archives to ask, "How did these moving images get here for me to see them?"
