The Hip and Pelvis in Sports Medicine and Primary Care Book Review:

What a great opportunity it is to participate in the body of information advancing the study of musculoskeletal medicine. As the physician, the readers can attest that didactic presen- tions of musculoskeletal complaints are at a minimum during undergraduate training. The advancement of individual clinical understanding of this field many times is left to the practitioner. Out of imagination, passion, or frustration, we the musculosk- etal practitioners seek to improve our abilities to provide better clinical diagnostic endeavors. The hip and pelvis is an area in musculoskeletal and sports medicine that provides continued mystery. It is the last great bastion of the unknown. Our hope in bringing together many excellent clinician authors is to provide the basis for improved approach to the patient and athlete who have complaints involving the hip and pelvis. Each chapter begins with a clinical case which is probably similar to the patients you see in your practices. Each chapter provides an approach to the diagnosis of hip and pelvis pain and dysfunction that hopefully is easily applicable to your daily activities as a practitioner. Most importantly, we hope that the material contained within this book helps you provide improved care, satisfaction, and function for your patient athletes. Jimmy D. Read My Hips Book Review:

“I feel twisted”, “I look crooked in the mirror”, “My problems have been going on for years”, “I have tried every kind of treatment” are commonly heard statements. Whether you have complaints or not, it’s time to look at your body alignment, given that the pelvis and spine are not properly aligned in 80% of us. Think of a car that has an alignment problem! The tires wear differently and the car may wiggle and wobble, eventually causing structural damage to the frame and steering mechanism. We are not so different. Unwanted stresses caused by malalignment can affect every part of your body. You may feel it, for example, as “low back pain”, a “bursitis”, “tight hamstrings”. This book starts by explaining how your pelvis and spine function when in alignment and what happens when things go wrong. It describes some easy ways to recognize and treat the three most common ways the pelvis goes out of alignment. Then it outlines the “malalignment syndrome” – the typical changes and complaints associated with malalignment that, unfortunately, often lead to unwarranted investigation, misdiagnosis, and inappropriate and sometimes harmful treatment. After discussing the impact on various sports, it provides a comprehensive treatment approach aimed at achieving and maintaining your alignment making use of appropriate complementary techniques and encouraging your regular participation to achieve lasting results.

Chronic Pelvic Pain in Women Book Review:

The number of studies on chronic and recurrent pain bears no relation to the frequency of these complaints in gynecologic practice, nor to the clinical and scientific problems that still need solving in this area. Several factors stand in the way of progress in this field, such as the strongly subjective nature of the complaints, the frequent lack of correlation between them and objective findings, and the complexity of the psychosomatic interac tions involved. Although progress in our knowledge has been much slower than we would have wished, and although we are well aware of these many gaps, it was considered useful to gather in a book what we think we have learned during 3 decades of active interest in pain patients and pain problems in gynecologic practice and 12 years of supervision of a pain clinic in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Leuven University. As there are many differences between acute pain - clinical as well as experi mental - on the one hand and chronic pain symptoms on the other, it was felt preferable to limit the scope of this book essentially to chronic and recurrent pain in gynecologic practice. When presented with a complaint of lower abdominal and/or low back pain, the gynecologist should constantly be on the lookout for nongynecologic causes, of which the most frequent will be either gastroenterologic or orthopedic and sometimes urologic. I have been fortunate in obtaining the collaboration of Dr.

Pain Management in Small Animal Medicine Book Review:

Pain Management in Small Animal Medicine describes and clearly illustrates the difficulties and choices facing veterinarians in identifying and treating pain, in addition to providing an account of the neurobiological mechanisms responsible for the pain. Expanded from the author’s previous work, Chronic Pain in Small Animal Medicine, this volume uses the original text to illustrate the core theme of "mechanism base" and expands the text considerably with the inclusion of areas beyond chronic pain. Topics include: Pain assessment in small animal medicine The functional physiology of pain The use of pharmacologics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs Nutraceutical mechanisms and therapy Management of pain related to canine osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal disease, and cancer Pain management features unique to cats Emphasizing the latest evidence and contemporary understanding of "why" and "how" to treat pain, the book will enable veterinary healthcare professionals as well as those in training, education, and research to develop a greater depth of knowledge in mechanisms of pain and potential targets for treatment— thereby raising the standard of care for pain management.
