Optimizing Flood Control Allocation for a Multipurpose Reservoir Book Review:

In the last decade, much research has been devoted to applying the systems analysis approach to water resources problems. A popular research goal has been determination of the 'best' method of operating a multipurpose reservoir. The goal of this study was to derive the economically optimum flood control diagram for a multipurpose reservoir by systems analysis. The technique employed to optimize the flood control diagram was programmed so that the optimization process could be applied to other multipurpose reservoirs. Two computer programs developed at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center were utilized with modifications to simulate the operation of Folsom Reservoir in central California. Economic analyses were incorporated along with an optimization technique into the reservoir operations program; and the resultant program was capable of routing a sequence of monthly reservoir inflows, computing benefits for various flood control diagrams (as dictated by the optimization procedure) and selecting the economically optimum flood control diagram. The univariate gradient technique was the optimization procedure employed. The two computer programs are on file at The Hydrologic Engineering Center in Davis, California. (Author).

Optimizing Hyperparameters for Machine Learning Algorithms in Production Book Review:

Machine learning (ML) offers the potential to train data-based models and therefore to extract knowledge from data. Due to an increase in networking and digitalization, data and consequently the application of ML are growing in production. The creation of ML models includes several tasks that need to be conducted within data integration, data preparation, modeling, and deployment. One key design decision in this context is the selection of the hyperparameters of an ML algorithm – regardless of whether this task is conducted manually by a data scientist or automatically by an AutoML system. Therefore, data scientists and AutoML systems rely on hyperparameter optimization (HPO) techniques: algorithms that automatically identify good hyperparameters for ML algorithms. The selection of the HPO technique is of great relevance, since it can improve the final performance of an ML model by up to 62 % and reduce its errors by up to 95 %, compared to computing with default values. As the selection of the HPO technique depends on different domain-specific influences, it becomes more and more popular to use decision support systems to facilitate this selection. Since no approach exists, which covers the requirements from the production domain, the main research question of this thesis was: Can a decision support system be developed that supports in the selecting of HPO techniques in the production domain?

This study has two declared aims: it presents the theoretical basis for a provably ideal comparative process for relaxing flows (ICP) and jus tifies its application to jet and, in particular, rocket engines. This will be treated in two parts. Part I offers a status quo report on current calculation methods, and compiles and explains briefly the most important data on selected pro minent rocket engines. Starting from the phenomenology of the dynamical and physico-chemical conversion processes in the fuel-oxidizer fluid mixture and in the burned gases, the ideal thermodynamic comparative process is then derived - as a defined sequential change of states in the system. In order to render this comparative process readily under standable, it is first applied to an appropriate model gas using alge braic equations for all relevant parameters. This model gas undergoes energy conversion processes without forfeiting the simplicity of pre sentation typical of classical gas dynamics. Above all, examination of this model offers proof that it is generally impermissible to use, as is done in practice, the familiar isentropic equation for flow changes of state continuously propagated in flow tube theory. Elementary calculations immediately indicate essential attributes which are also typical for relaxing, multicomponent, one-phase systems, such as the significant 'pressure drop phenomenon' or the establishment of the steady mass flow rate as an 'eigenvalue' of the comparative pro cess. Their relevance to the RE theory is stressed.
