There is a saying that "hand surgery without a tourniquet is like repairing a clock in a barrel full of dark ink." Operating without a sound fundamental knowledge of anatomy can be compared to "stirring around in the soup." Classic anatomy instruction covers only a fraction of the area of hand surgery: bones, muscles/ligaments, vessels, and nerves. The many different connective-tissue structures are often only briefly highlighted. The complex interaction of the various structures remains a mystery to most. This book presents the specialty of applied anatomy and is intended for medical professionals involved with the hand and its functionality: hand surgeons, trauma specialists, orthopaedists, plastic surgeons, occupational therapists, and physio-therapists. Key Features: Almost 150 illustrations, anatomical drawings, and photos of anatomy in vivo. Part 1 deals with the anatomy and functional anatomy of the hand Part 2 is dedicated to the surface anatomy of the structures of the forearm, wrist, and hand

This book, the first study of its kind, examines the economics behind motorsports, in particular Formula One. Chapters discuss the costs involved in Formula racing and how they are borne by teams, promoters and racers. The book also looks at how society, the public and the private sectors stand to benefit economically from the motorsport industry. Other issues like the economics of TV rights, sponsorship and sustainability are also addressed, again for the first time in an economics book. Moving beyond the economics of what happens off the track, the book also undertakes a serious examination of what goes in to making a winning team and what having a winning racer can do for a team’s fortunes. Mourão’s highly relevant and contemporary book also looks at how motorsport teams confront the challenges of the modern sporting world, including the changing dynamics of sports media and considers the future of Formula 1 as motorsports evolve.

Governed by strict regulations and the intricate balance of complex interactions among variables, the application of mechanics to vehicle crashworthiness is not a simple task. It demands a solid understanding of the fundamentals, careful analysis, and practical knowledge of the tools and techniques of that analysis. Vehicle Crash Mechanics sets forth the basic principles of engineering mechanics and applies them to the issue of crashworthiness. The author studies the three primary elements of crashworthiness: vehicle, occupant, and restraint. He illustrates their dynamic interactions through analytical models, experimental methods, and test data from actual crash tests. Parallel development of the analysis of actual test results and the interpretation of mathematical models related to the test provides insight into the parameters and interactions that influence the results. Detailed case studies present real-world crash tests, accidents, and the effectiveness of air bag and crash sensing systems. Design analysis formulas and two- and three-dimensional charts help in visualizing the complex interactions of the design variables. Vehicle crashworthiness is a complex, multifaceted area of study. Vehicle Crash Mechanics clarifies its complexities. The book builds a solid foundation and presents up-to-date techniques needed to meet the ultimate goal of crashworthiness analysis and experimentation: to satisfy and perhaps exceed the safety requirements mandated by law.

Tissue engineering as a technology and as a therapeutic has captured worldwide attention and commitmentbecause it has such potential in the care of humanity. Because we are not as yet able to craft robust three dimensional vascular and ductal structures to support the development of complex parenchymal organs, the initial focus of the field has been on thin tissues that can be nourished by diffusion alone. The best example of this class is cartilage. Thought by some to be a relatively simple tissue in the early days of tissue engineering, deep study of this tissue has shown it to manifest great complexity.Yearsof experimental and clinical effort have begun to untangle the clues that will allow us to reproducibly characterize, gener ate and clinically apply engineered cartilage with positive effects.World wide researchers and clinicians are intently focused on this goal and it has come time to step back and make a good assessment of our progress.

Over the years, there has been much controversy regarding whether today s children and adolescents are fitter than their peers of the past and whether they are fitter if they live in the more affluent than the less affluent countries. This publication starts by examining data cumulated since the late 1950s on secular trends and geographic variability in pediatric fitness test performances of children and adolescents from 23 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, Australasia, Africa and the Middle East. There is evidence that there has been a global decline in pediatric aerobic performance in recent decades, relative stability in anaerobic performance, and that the best performing children come from northern and central Europe. It finishes by considering possible causes, including whether declines in aerobic performance are the result of distributional or across-the-board declines, and whether increases in obesity alone can explain the declines in aerobic performance. Physical educators, exercise/sport scientists, exercise physiologists, personal trainers, pediatricians, medical practitioners and public health providers will find useful information in this book on secular trends and geographic variability in pedatric fitness.

Bicycles have been a common device to enhance physical fitness level in gyms and training centers along with solid use in competitive sport. For that reason, biomechanics of cycling has grown as a research field with many publications addressing different perspective of the interaction between the cyclist and his bicycle. The most common end point of research on biomechanics of cycling is optimization of performance and reduction of injury risk. One goal of this book is to meet the growing need for a comprehensive presentation of contemporary knowledge on biomechanics of cycling which will positively influence the activity of cycling in a global fashion. In order to accomplish this purpose, ten chapters are presented with focus on varying methods for biomechanical analysis of cycling motion. The introduction section provides an overview of the main methods for assessment of cycling motion, including motion analysis, pedal force measurements, muscle activation, anthropometry and joint kinetics. These methods are discussed in depth in individual chapters followed by chapters on characteristics of bicycles and potential perspectives to improve their configuration in order to improve performance of cyclists and reduce their overuse injury risk. Moreover, a preliminary method to train technique in cyclists is shown. A final chapter provides authors perspective on the upcoming technology that should be effective in helping training of cyclists.
