Light-based therapies have been a major component of dermatologic practice. Historically, these treatment modalities have been mainly tailored to the treatment of patients with light skin. Principles governing use of light therapies in skin of color are less defined. However, there is a tremendous need to understand the benefits and limitations of these therapeutic options for dark-skinned patients as well. Demographic data in the United States alone indicate that the population and recipients of health care are rapidly changing with regard to skin phototype. Physicians who are involved in the delivery of care for patients with cutaneous problems that can be addressed by light treatments need to be able to fully understand the mechanisms, applications, risks, efficacy, adverse events, and other pertinent issues in considering treatment options for their patients with pigmented skin.

This book addresses the lack of information on treating pigmented skin with lasers and light sources. It includes the basic foundations of photobiology and a wealth of practical information on specific treatment modalities for darker-skinned patients.

The two-volume set LNCS 10484 and 10485 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing, ICIAP 2017, held in Catania, Italy, in September 2017. The 138 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 229 submissions. Laser has been used in dermatology for over four decades. The concept of selective photothermolysis has transformed our understanding of laser tissue interactions, and there has been an explosive interest in laser treatment for both skin diseases and aesthetic indications over the past decade or more. Asian skin differs from Caucasian skin because of the higher amount of epidermal melanosomes and the higher level of melanin production. Laser- and light-based procedures in darker skin types have a significantly higher risk of complications, including scarring and pigmentary changes as compared with lighter skin types. This timely and unique book explores the concept of colorism, which is discrimination based on the color of a person’s skin, in a world where arguably light skin is privileged over dark, and one’s wealth, health, and opportunities are impacted by skin color, sometimes irrespective of one’s racial background. In the context of our multi-cultural and increasingly global society, and the historical backdrop of slavery, the text takes a unique approach by moving from personal anecdotes to adopting a scientific perspective grounded in empirical evidence.
