Introduction to Manual Medicine Book Review:

This volume is a welcome contribution to the literature on manual medicine. It is concise and accessible, yet covers the field compre hensively. It presents a synthesis of the past current literature and provides a valuable overview. Dr. Neumann, for many years a stu dent, practitioner, teacher, and now international leader in this field, demonstrates his deep understanding of the diverse theories and vocabularies current in many schools of manual medicine, and presents the various viewpoints and approaches in an easily read able fashion. This book is of assistance to the neophyte student as well as the experienced practioner. From the basics of palpation to the clinical cases, both typical and complex, the reader's knowledge is en hanced with each succeeding page. Introduction to Manual Medicine represents a valuable addition to the library of all practioners treating patients with musculoskele tal problems. April 1989, East Lansing, Michigan Philip E. Greenman, D.O., FAA.O. Preface When I was working as a resident orthopedist at the University Hospital in Tiibingen, Germany, I saw a patient in the orthopedic clinic who complained of headaches. This patient, who apparently had previously seen a practitioner of manual medicine, stated that his atlas must have "popped out of place" and asked me to "fix it, to put it back in place." Despite my having had extensive orthope dic training up to that time, I did not unterstand what the patient actually meant, and could not help him further.

Musculoskeletal Manual Medicine Book Review:

This richly illustrated, logically organized book, while clinically oriented, presents both the theory and practice of the expanding field of musculoskeletal medicine. Its aim is to fully integrate and coordinate the relatively young field of manual medicine with classic medical school teaching, based on current biomechanical and evidence-based knowledge. Without prejudice the book includes the positive aspects of osteopathic and chiropractic examination and treatment techniques within the context of a functionally meaningful musculoskeletal management approach. While the particular examination and related treatment techniques are described in detail, the layout facilitates both a quick overview and sufficient detail, when needed. The accompanying text describes and correlates possible pathologic findings. Other chapters cover the history of manual medicine, examination and treatment principles, and the application of biomechanics and muscle physiology to the various non-surgical hands-on approaches, including myofascial trigger point treatment Emphasis is given to anatomical descriptions of muscles and their palpatory assessment as well as techniques to treat shortened muscles. The concept of muscle imbalance is presented. Relationships between pain and specific variables are juxtaposed and graphically represented. Rational treatment approaches are described, ranging from "wait-and-see" recommendations to further medical work-up and indications for surgery. Specific musculoskeletal disorders are reviewed in detail. Musculoskeletal Manual Medicine will be indispensable to professionals who treat the person with acute and chronic musculoskeletal problems, providing access to the broadest possible armamentarium based on today's knowledge and insights.

Manipulative Therapy Book Review:

Manipulative Therapy provides a systematic overview of chain reactions which are the basis of a rational holistic approach. These reactions are closely related to the upright human posture and to the "deep stabilisation system" as shown in the work of Richardson et al in Therapeutic Exercise for Spinal Stabilisation in Low Back Pain. This approach has meant a considerable advance in the therapy and rehabilitation of patients. It gives a balanced picture of the importance of musles, joints and soft tissues, under the control of the nervous system, the textbook aims to treat disturbance of function, the most common cause of pain in the motor system, in the most effective way. Locomotor system dysfunctions are shown to be treated very effectively using manual medicine techniques. Spinal column and joint mobility can be restored, and pain triggered by the autonomic nervous system can be positively influenced. This is a comprehensive source of information relating to pathogenesis, diagnosis, indications and treatment methods, incorporating the latest research findings. Radiological diagnosis is is shown as laying the foundation for successful diagnosis and treatment with manual medicine techniques. Typical conditions associated with pain in the locomotor system is presented and described in functional terms for the first time. The book concludes with chapters covering preventative aspects and expert assessment. Manipulative Therapy: Musculoskeletal Medicine is the follow on from: Manipulative Therapy in Rehabilitation of the Locomotor System, published by Butterworth Heinemann, 1985.

Maitland s Peripheral Manipulation E Book Book Review:

The legacy of Geoff Maitland and his seminal work, Peripheral Manipulation, continues in this fifth edition, with Elly Hengeveld and Kevin Banks leading an international team of experts who demonstrate how to manage peripheral neuromusculoskeletal disorders using the principles and practice of the Maitland Concept. Together, they ensure the heart of the Concept beats on by promoting collaborative decision-making with the patient at centre and emphasizing the art and science of observation, listening, palpation and movement skills. A key feature of the new edition focuses on a more evidence-based and analytical view of the role of mobilization and manipulation in clinical practice. The authors have written in a way that reflects their application of the Maitland Concept and how they have integrated techniques in the light of advancement in professional knowledge. Each chapter stands alone as a ‘master class’. The text is systematically arranged focusing on detailed assessment, clinical reasoning and re-assessment to determine the physical dysfunction and efficacy of manipulative physiotherapy techniques, while also advocating continuous communication and interaction. Techniques of passive mobilization are also described, specifically designed around the individual patient’s condition. All the chapters are written from a clinical perspective and review the evidence which informs how to deal with and manage peripheral joint pain as they present to the practitioner. Furthermore, each peripheral region (craniomandibular, upper limbs and lower limbs) is considered from the point of view of best practice in analysing and hypothesising subjective data, examination, treatment and management of peripheral pain conditions. Brand new to the fifth edition is the addition of a companion website – Maitland’s Manipulation eResources (www.maitlandsresources.com) – providing access to a range of valuable learning materials which include videos, MCQs, interactive case studies, research links, and bonus chapters. World-leading experts provide evidence relating the Maitland Concept to clinical practice Evidence supporting practice Covers both subjective and physical examination Best practice management using mobilization and manipulation Case studies – how and when to integrate the Maitland Concept into clinical practice Chapter-based learning outcomes, keywords and glossaries Companion website – Maitland’s Manipulation eResources (www.maitlandsresources.com) Expert perspectives and supporting evidence Case studies Companion website – www.maitlandsresources.com – containing: Video Bank of over 480 video clips showing examination and treatment techniques Image Bank of over 1,000 illustrations Interactive case studies Over 200 MCQs Bonus chapters on additional principles and techniques of examination / treatment Weblink references to abstracts

Manipulative Therapy in Rehabilitation of the Locomotor System Book Review:

This book is the updated English version (not a mere translation) of a textbook which appeared successively in Czech,in German, in Bulgarian, in Dutch and in Polish. This English version is shorter, more concise and includes the latest techniques. The role of manipulation is limited to passive mobility and an important part of this book deals with active mobility. The author emphasizes that this is a textbook and not a manual of techniques: the latter deals with individual techniques, while his purpose is to show that it can be disastrous to confine one's interest in this manner and to remain unaware of both the broader context of treatment and of the possible alternatives. There are chapters on functional anatomy, the diagnosis and treatment of disturbed locomotor system function, including indications of appropriate treatment and the place of manipulation, and finally a long chapter on the clinical aspects of impaired function of the locomotor system. The book begins by discussing the major role played by impaired function in the vast majority of patients suffering from pain arising in the locomotor system. This type of pain is altogether the most frequent from which patients suffer, and the first two chapters of this book are mainly concerned with the origin of this pain. It is traditionally associated with rheumatism, but unfortunately rheumatologists are insufficiently aware of locomotor function and leave this field largely to neurologists and orthopaedic surgeons. The author believes that the speciality which is principally concerned with impaired function and its restoration to normal is rehabiliation medicine, a term which includes physical therapy, and it is in this framework that the future of manipulation lies. This will continue to be the case until, one day, a new speciality is established, one which deals with the whole of the locomotor system and in particular with its function. Ideally, it should be called "Musculo-skeletal Medicine".

Interactions between the Craniomandibular System and Cervical Spine Book Review:

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The connections between the mobility of the jaw region and that of the cervical spine have been the subject of research on many occasions in recent decades. For example, Ridder gives an overview of experiments conducted on animals by Japanese scientists in his monograph Functional impairments in the jaw and tooth malalignment and their effects on the periphery of the body . In this monograph, he describes investigations that tested the effects of changes in the dental and jaw regions, and that persisted in the long-term, on the periphery of the body. In the quadrant theory, Guzay outlines that the centre of the movements of the jaw does not lie within the temporomandibular joint itself. He describes how the movements of the jaw occur around a region in the upper cervical spine, namely around the atlanto-axial joint. Based on this proposition, he declares (ibid.) that inadequate dental occlusion can result in spinal malalignment, leading to curvature of the body axis. Maehara tested the propositions put forward in the quadrant theory by shortening the right-hand teeth in rats. He subsequently observed scoliosis of the spine and variation in the size of the right and left eyes. In addition, he shortened the teeth in Beagle dogs. As a result, the dogs exhibited bad posture, changes to their fur, watery eyes and cataracts. Maehara & Hashimoto then also shortened some of the teeth in monkeys. They observed that the monkeys suffered from loss of fur, exhibited abnormal behaviour and that their tongues were bent. Following this, a stencil-like splint was fitted to the shortened teeth to restore the original tooth height. This resulted in growth of the monkeys' fur, normal behaviour and a straightening of the tongues. In a further experiment, Maehara & Azuma shortened the teeth in guinea pigs. The guinea pigs lost weight after two weeks. Weight loss was greater in these animals than in control animals that were starved. After one week, electro-cardiograms of the guinea pigs exhibited a negative T wave, indicating cardiac insufficiency. The researchers then also shortened the teeth in the control group, which resulted in the negative T wave being exhibited by all animals. Based on these results, the question arises as to whether functional connections in the dental and jaw regions also exert effects on the periphery of the body in humans. Several publications indicate that this may be so. For example, Stiesch-Scholz et al. also [...]
