Never Trust a Loving God Book Review:

Nick Tosches discovered Thierry Alonso Gravleur's paintings in one of the major Los Angeles art galleries. He was immediately stricken by the strength of Gravleur's expressionist works which almost obsessively explore the human face: Gravleur is capable of rendering a face like no-one since Rembrandt and of capturing a soul like no-one since Bosch. Both artists meet and unsurprisingly decide to work together. They share the same vision of a humanity torn between idealization and pulsing. The result matches each artist's talent: Tosches' words echo Gravleur's drawings; Gravleur's drawings and paintings illustrate Tosches' words.

God of Shadows Book Review:

The celebrated poet hailed by Ursula K. Le Guin as a "storyteller, truth-teller, and visionary" gives us a mesmerizing new collection of poems that are funny, wise, moving, and surprising. How many gods can dance on the head of Lorna Crozier's pen? The poet Lorna Crozier has always been brilliant at fusing the ordinary with the other-worldly in strange and surprising ways. Now the Governor General's Literary Award-winning author of Inventing the Hawk returns with God of Shadows, a wryly wise book that offers a polytheistic gallery of the gods we never knew existed and didn't know we needed. To read these poems is to be ready to offer your own prayers to the god of shadows, the god of quirks, and the god of vacant houses. Sing new votive hymns to the gods of horses, birds, cats, rats, and insects. And give thanks at the altars of the gods of doubt, guilt, and forgetting. What life-affirming questions have these deities come to ask? Perhaps it is simply this: How can poems be at once so profound, original and lively, and also so much fun?

Big Freedia Book Review:

From the eponymous star of one of the most popular reality shows in Fuse’s history, this no-holds-barred memoir and “snappily dictated story of inverted cultural norms in the wards of New Orleans” (East Bay Express) reveals the fascinating truth about a gay, self-proclaimed mama’s boy who exploded onto the formerly underground Bounce music scene and found acceptance, healing, self-expression, and stardom. As the “undisputed ambassador” of the energetic, New Orleans-based Bounce movement, Big Freedia isn’t afraid to twerk, wiggle, and shake her way to self-confidence, and is encouraging her fans to do the same. In her engrossing memoir, Big Freedia tells the inside story of her path to fame, the peaks and valleys of her personal life, and the liberation that Bounce music brings to herself and every one of her fans who is searching for freedom. Big Freedia immediately pulls us into the relationship between her personal life and her career as an artist; being a “twerking sissy” is not just a job, she says, but a salvation. A place to find solace and escape from the battles she faced growing up in the worst neighborhood in New Orleans. To deal with losing loved ones to the violence on the streets, drug overdoses, and jail. To survive hurricane Katrina by living on her roof for two days with three adults and a child. To grapple with the difficulties and celebrate the joys of living. In this eye-opening memoir that bursts with energy, you’ll learn the history of the Bounce movement and meet all the colorful characters that pepper its music scene. “Whether detailing the highs or the lows, Freedia’s tales pop as much as the booty that made her famous” (Out Magazine).

Ten Concepts Book Review:

Faith is not merely adopting a set of beliefs that you may say in the “Creed”, but a way of life or adherence to that which leads to life. To what benefit is believing in God without having a relationship with him, obeying and loving Him? In addition, what is the benefit of believing in eternity and in life after death if one does not prepare for it by repentance, spiritual vigil, and loving God? And to what benefit is believing in virtues if one does not live them? Therefore there is a big difference between theoretical faith which does not save the soul, and practical faith, the fruits of which are evident in one's life. Pope Shenouda III

Everyday Theology Cultural Exegesis Book Review:

Everyday theology is the reflective and practical task of living each day as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. In other words, theology is not just for Sundays, and it's not just for professional theologians. Everyday Theology teaches all Christians how to get the theological lay of the land. It enables them to become more conscious of the culture they inhabit every day so that they can understand how it affects them and how they can affect it. If theology is the ministry of the Word to the world, everyday theologians need to know something about that world, and Everyday Theology shows them how to understand their culture make an impact on it. Engaging and full of fresh young voices, this book is the first in the new Cultural Exegesis series.

The Nature of Christ Book Review:

The nature of Christ is a very important subject that caused a serious dissension within the Church in the fifth century, in 451 AD. When the theological dialogue started as an effort towards the unity of churches, the subject had to be discussed. Therefore, our Orthodox Church found it necessary to issue a book which presents its concept in this regard in a language fit for theological dialogues. This subject (the Nature of Christ) was taught by me to the students of the Seminary "St. Mark Theological College" in 1984 in the form of lectures which I delivered to them in St. Bishoy Monastery, Sheheit Desert, as part of the courses of comparative Theology. The lectures were printed merely for the use of the students. The same lectures were afterwards translated into English in Ottawa, Canada, in 1980 and became available in English only for six years... We had to print them in Arabic for the students of the Seminary and its branches and for the benefit of those who are interested in theological studies whether ministers or ordinary individuals.. and whoever has the desire-from other churches to be acquainted with our concept of Christology. The first theological dialogue we attended on this subject was in Vienna, Austria in September 1971 AD convened by the ProOriente Group. In this dialogue we reached a theological formula that was accepted by our Catholic brothers and those in the old Oriental orthodox churches: the Syrians, Arminians, Ethiopians and Indians. It was an important dialogue indeed, for the dissension that occurred in the fifth century had distorted the face of every church before the other.. But now the way is open for a common understanding. Then, there was an official agreement with the Catholic churches after 17 years of differences (since 1988), based on the previous understanding. The agreement was recorded in a concise "Statement" which you will find at the end of this book. There was another dialogue, in more detail, with our brothers in the Byzantine Orthodox Churches in St. Bishoy Monastery, Sheheit Desert in 1989 AD. It was attended by the theologians of twenty Orthodox Churches and was followed by another meeting of the priestly representatives of the Orthodox churches in Chambesy, Geneva, in 1990. Now, seeing it is necessary to make our people acquainted with the details and evidences that prove our concept of the Nature of Christ, and since the Pro-Oriente Group is convening a religious conference for the representatives of all Churches at the end of October 1991 to present to them the Agreed Statement on Christology. And since we were asked to present a paper on the subject and deliver it as a lecture in the conference. Therefore, we proceeded to print the former lectures delivered in the Seminary in 1984 as a book to be presented to the conference and to be available in Arabic and in English for all who are interested. God in Reverse Book Review:

As an artist, architect and urban activist, Richard Goodwin has never been interested in following rules. It is therefore fitting that this monograph, encompassing over four decades of work, is entirely unorthodox.Authored and illustrated by Goodwin (with both archival photographs and recent artwork), God in Reverse fuses biography, fiction, criticism, observation and imagination. It reveals a broad range of philosophies and cultural influences that underpin Goodwin's practice and elaborates on his unique and experimental world-view, as it applies to his architecture, public artworks, sculpture, drawings and performance art.Having studied architecture at both RMIT and UNSW, Goodwin has been a critical commentator of architecture and urbanism, particularly within Sydney, since the 1970s. The book moves seamlessly from lambasting the commercial greed of the Barangaroo wharf development, to ruminations on the divided city of Jerusalem, to lessons in urban planning offered by coral reefs. The ethical questions raised by the text span drone warfare and super-high density housing.Designed by award winning designer Sean Hogan, the book's taut and irreverent design is a testament to its unconventional content, with the text-flow and layout slowly discombobulating as the pages turn.Richard Goodwin has a PhD from University of New South Wales Art & Design where he is an Associate Professor. He has won a number of prizes including the Wynne Prize (2011) from the Art Gallery of NSW. Goodwin's work is held in major collections including the Art Gallery of NSW, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Nuremburg Museum.

Art and Prayer Book Review:

Prayer is natural for human beings, a spontaneous impulse common in all people. Yet, beyond instinct, there is a kind of prayer that's conscious and articulate, that we have to be taught. There is an "art of prayer," when faith and prayer become creative responses by which creatures made in the image and likeness of the Creator relate to him with help of the imagination. Timothy Verdon explores these essential interactions in this magnificent book. Richly illustrated, Monsignor Verdon explains that images work in believers as tools that teach them how to turn to God. Art and Prayer explores these interactions in detail, demonstrating that prayer can become a fruit of the sanctified imagination - a way of beauty and turning to God.

Please God Send Me a Husband Book Review:

"Dr. Monique Rainford did not have a straight and easy path to finding her life partner, her husband, Chester Ryan Bourne. Her personal experience and those of the many women who she interacted with both socially and through her OB/GYN practice led her to write this book. Using her own experience and that of the more than fifty women she interviewed, she has provided a roadmap, complete with traffic signs, roadblocks and potholes that women encounter on the way to marriage. Whether or not they succeed has a lot to do with how they navigate this journey. If you are on the path to finding the right man for marriage, this book is a must."--Amazon.com.
