rd This book constitutes a collection of extended versions of papers presented at the 23 IFIP TC7 Conference on System Modeling and Optimization, which was held in C- cow, Poland, on July 23–27, 2007. It contains 7 plenary and 22 contributed articles, the latter selected via a peer reviewing process. Most of the papers are concerned with optimization and optimal control. Some of them deal with practical issues, e. g. , p- formance-based design for seismic risk reduction, or evolutionary optimization in structural engineering. Many contributions concern optimization of infini- dimensional systems, ranging from a general overview of the variational analysis, through optimization and sensitivity analysis of PDE systems, to optimal control of neutral systems. A significant group of papers is devoted to shape analysis and opti- zation. Sufficient optimality conditions for ODE problems, and stochastic control methods applied to mathematical finance, are also investigated. The remaining papers are on mathematical programming, modeling, and information technology. The conference was the 23rd event in the series of such meetings biennially org- ized under the auspices of the Seventh Technical Committee “Systems Modeling and Optimization” of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP TC7).

An Invariant Embedding Approach to Domain Decomposition Book Review:

We consider the problem of numerically solving the wave scattering problem in two dimensions, when the scatterer consists of a sound-soft compact scatterer surrounded by a compactly supported scattering medium. The scattering problem in the exterior domain is solved using boundary integral equations, while the solution near the scatterer is best treated by finite element methods. It is well known that these solutions can be glued together using non-reflecting boundary conditions, a common choice being the Dirichlet-to-Neumman (Steklov-Poincare) map. If the support of the scattering medium is large, the interior problem may require a large mesh and become computationally intense. We consider an alternative method based on the idea of invariant imbedding: first numerically solve for the DtN map on a boundary of a small domain merely enclosing the sound-hard scatterer, and then radially propagate the map out of the support of the scattering medium. Special attention needs to be paid to the stability of the propagation scheme that requires a solution of a matrix-valued Riccati equation. It is shown that by applying an appropriate Cayley transform on the matrix, problems arising from resonances can be avoided.

This book treats various generalizations of the classical O'Doherty-Anstey formula in order to describe stratigraphic filtering effects. These are the effects that can be observed when elastic and electromagnetic waves propagate through multilayered structures. Our aim was to treat this topic in a comprehensive manner and present compact results in a didactically simple way, emphasizing the physics of the wave-propagation phenomena. We do not claim mathematical rigidity in all our derivations, however, we are pleased to have obtained quite simple descriptions of scattering, transmission and reflection of wavefields in acoustic, elastic, and poroelastic media which can be useful for various seismological and non-seismological applications.
