The Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Roundtable on Research and Development of Drugs, Biologics, and Medical Devices evolved from the Forum on Drug Development, which was established in 1986. Although the scientific literature on drug metabolism is extensive, it suffers from the disadvantage that the material is diffuse and consists largely of specialist monographs dealing with particular aspects of the subject.
