A Tactical Application of Coastal Acoustic Tomography Book Review:

The objective of this study is to investigate the utility of acoustic tomography for performance assessment of a generic low frequency active sonar system. The performance of the sonar is simulated using tomography-derived sound speed data versus a range independent ocean model. The ocean environment used in the simulation is 159 tomographic snapshots of the Barents Sea Polar Front, taken every 5 minutes in August 1992. The modeled sonar system consists of a 1000 Hz source with a source level of 205.5 dB and a towed horizontal array of hydrophones. The system is derived from unclassified parameters of ATAS (Active Towed Array Sonar), built by Thomson Sintra ASM and British Aerospace SEMA, and the experimental ALF sonar, designed by FEL-TNO (the Netherlands) and built by Thomson Sintra ASM. The tomographic images over a range of 26 km provide a realistic ocean in which system performance is assessed. This study used a broadband, coupled normal mode, propagation model and assumed a noise-limited condition. The probability of detection calculated as a function of time for 13 hours is compared with that estimated using a range- and time-independent assumption. The utility of coastal acoustic tomography for tactical applications is discussed. (AN).

Coastal Acoustic Tomography Data Constraints Applied to a Coastal Ocean Circulation Model Book Review:

A direct insertion scheme for assimilating coastal acoustic tomographic (CAT) vertical temperature sections into a multilevel, coastal primitive equation model for the Gulf of Sirte (Lybia) is investigated using computer simulation experiments. Although the model was developed for the whole Mediterranean Sea (MED), only a model sub-domain covering the Gulf of Sirte was used in this study. The model has realistic coastlines and bottom topography, and a coastal-following, curvilinear, nearly orthogonal, horizontal coordinate system with a horizontal resolution of about 10 by 10 km. The grid of the model was designed using a grid generation/focusing technique. The model has complete thermodynamics, second order turbulence closure, and 16 bottom-following (sigma) vertical levels. To generate the true ocean for this study, the model was first spun up for 30 days with the Levitus temperature and salinity and ECMWF wind climatologies, and then run for one year and more. The last 60 days of this control run were taken to represent actuality.

Experimental Acoustic Inversion Methods for Exploration of the Shallow Water Environment Book Review:

In recent years, research on acoustic remote sensing of the ocean has evolved considerably, especially in studying complex physical and biological processes in shallow water environments. To review the state of the art, an international workshop was held at Carvoeiro, Portugal, in March 1999, bringing together leading international researchers in the field. In contrast to much of the recent theoretical work, emphasis was placed on the experimental validation of the techniques. This volume, based on presentations at this workshop, summarizes a range of diverse and innovative applications. The invited contributions explore the use of acoustics to measure bottom properties and morphology, as well as to probe buried objects within the sediment. Within the water column, sound is applied to imaging of oceanographic features such as currents and tides or monitoring of marine life. Another key theme is the use of sound to solve geometric inverse problems for precise tracking of undersea vehicles. Ocean Acoustics Book Review:

This Topics volume is devoted to a study of sound propagation in the ocean. The effect of the interior of the ocean on underwater sound is analogous to the effect of a lens on light. The oceanic lens is related, as in light propagation, to the index of refraction of the medium. The latter is giv~n by the ratio of the sound frequency to the speed of sound in water, typi ca lly about 1500 m s -1. It is the vari ation of the sound speed due to changing temperature, density, salinity, and pres sure in the complex ocean environment which creates the lens effect. Many oceanic processes such as currents, tides, eddies (circulating, translating regions of wa ter), and internal waves (the wave-like structure of the oceanic density variabil ity) contri bute in turn to the changes in sound speed'. The net effect of the ocean lens is to trap and guide sound waves in a channel created by the lens. The trapped sound can then propagate thousands of miles in this oceanic waveguide. In addition to the propagation in the interior of the ocean, sound can propagate into and back out of the ocean bottom as well as scatter from the ocean surface. Just as the sound produced by a loudspeaker in a room is affected by the walls of the room, so the ocean boundaries and the material properties below the ocean bottom are essential ingredients in the problem.

It all began with Markus Jochum approaching one of us (HvS) – “when you guys are doing interviews with senior scientists from oceanography and related sciences, why are you not doing Walter Munk?” Indeed, why not? Walter Munk, an icon in oceanography, had just given a wonderful talk in a symposium in honor of his 90th birthday, sweeping a grand circle from his earliest work with Chip Cox on airborne measurements of ocean surface roughness to the latest satellite data – not simply a review, but the struggle of an active scientist opening up new perspectives – as inspiring and stimulating as when one of us (KH) rst met him at the Ocean Waves Conference in Easton in 1961 (Fig. I. 1).
