Beyond Good Intentions Book Review:

Beyond Good Intentions is a book of essays about the joys and risks of raising children adopted internationally. Cheri Register examines ten pitfalls that well-meaning parents like herself can easily slip into: -- Wiping Away Our Children's Past -- Hovering Over Our Troubled Children -- Holding the Lid on Sorrow and Anger -- Parenting on the Defensive -- Believing Race Doesn't Matter -- Keeping Our Children Exotic -- Raising Our Children in Isolation -- Judging Our Country Superior -- Believing Adoption Saves Souls -- Appropriating Our Children's Heritage Each essay opens with an exaggerated version of something an adoptive parent might say, to prompt a fresh, intense look at practices so familiar they are seldom questioned, even though they may not serve the children's and the family's best interests. Register urges readers to bring their own experiences to bear in a candid conversation about internationally adoptive family life.

Beyond Good Intentions Book Review:

Two friends were discussing the possibility of life after death. "Hell is a myth," one argued. "How can a God of love condemn His creatures to everlasting punishment?" His friend nodded in agreement, and the matter seemed to be settled. The two sat silently for a moment until one of them looked and said, thoughtfully, "Suppose it is true, after all?" Suppose it is true after all that Hell exists? Jesus Christ Himself described it as a place of "darkness" and a "furnace of fire" where there shall be "wailing and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 13:42). Some say there is no consciousness after death. But from Christ's words, it's evident that a person in Hell is just as aware of himself and his surroundings as when he was on earth! The Bible, God's Word, says Hell is an everlasting burning for the punishment of sinners and hypocrites (Isaiah 33:14), a bottomless pit (Revelation 20:1) where men have no rest, day or night (Revelation 14:11). It's a place where people pray, but their prayers are not heard (Luke 16:27), where they gnaw their tongues and at the same time curse God (Revelation 16:10-11). Hell is a place where no one would want their loved ones to go (Luke 16:28). Suppose it is true after all that God will punish sin? The Bible says, "It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). Suppose it is true after all that we cannot get to Heaven on the basis of good things we've done? The Bible says, "we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6). Suppose it is true after all that Jesus Christ is the only Savior? Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me" (John 14:6). Be assured that God is holy and must punish sin. But He is also a God of love, "not willing that any should perish" (2 Peter 3:9). Therefore, He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins: "God commendeth His love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him" (Romans 5:8). But we must first recognize that we have sinned, ask God's forgiveness and receive Christ as our Savior. Then we can have the joy and peace of God's forgiveness, and the assurance that when we die we will be with Christ forever in Heaven. Have you received Jesus Christ as your Savior? "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him" (John 3:36). The choice is yours.

Beyond Good and Evil Book Review:

The preface accuses philosophers of dogmatism, and the first chapter explores this claim. Every great philosophy, Nietzsche asserts, is little more than the personal confession. Philosophers build up complex systems of thought to justify their own assumptions and prejudices. If we can dig these out, we can see what these philosophers value most deeply, and so gain insight into their character. Nietzsche contrasts their dogmatism with the "free spirit" that is not caught up in a particular point of view. He hopes the philosophers of the future will be characterized by such an experimental method, willing to try out any hypothesis, and follow any argument all the way to its conclusion.

Beyond Good and Evil Book Review:

No philosopher could be a better example of creative thinking in action than Friedrich Nietzsche: a German iconoclast who systematically attacked the traditionally accepted views of academic philosophers, seeking to tear down their rickety platform and replace it with a platform of his own. Creative thinkers are people who redefine issues and topics in novel ways to create novel connections, explanations and hypotheses – people, in short, who can turn a topic on its head and present it in an entirely new light. Nietzsche called them “free spirits” – those unwilling to accept the dogmas of the past, wanting instead to think clearly for themselves. In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche focuses his attention on nothing less than the underlying basis of our moral assumptions, unleashing a powerful, polemical critique of the moral dogmas of the past and his own time. His book, which remains one of the most influential works of moral philosophy ever written, is not just an example of creative thinking at work, it is also a passionate argument for its importance. As Nietzsche wrote, “Morality in Europe ... is the morality of herd animals.” But if one is ready to think differently and stand out from the herd, “other (and especially higher) moralities are ... possible.”

Beyond Performance 2 0 Book Review:

Double your odds of leading successful, sustainable change Leaders aren’t short on access to change management advice, but the jury has long been out as to which approach is the best one to follow. With the publication of Beyond Performance 2.0, the verdict is well and truly in. By applying the approach detailed by authors, Scott Keller and Bill Schaninger, the evidence shows that leaders can more than double their odds of success—from thirty percent to almost eighty. Whereas the first edition of Beyond Performance introduced the authors’ “Five Frames of Performance and Health” approach to change management, the fully revised and updated Beyond Performance 2.0 has been transformed into a truly practical “how to” guide for leaders. Every aspect of how to lead change at scale is covered in a step-by-step manner, always accompanied by practical tools and real-life examples. Keller and Schaninger’s work is distinguished in many ways, one of which is the rigor behind the recommendations. The underpinning research is the most comprehensive of its kind—based on over 5 million data points drawn from 2,000 companies globally over a 15-year period. This data is overlaid with the authors’ combined more than 40 years of experience in helping companies successfully achieve large-scale change. As senior partners in McKinsey & Company, consistently named the world’s most prestigious management consulting firm, Keller and Schaninger also draw on the shared experience of their colleagues from offices in over 60 countries with unrivaled access to CEOs and senior teams. Beyond Performance 2.0 also dares to go against the grain—eschewing the notion of copying best practices and instead guiding leaders to make choices specific to their unique context and organization. It does this with meticulously balance of focus on short- and long-term considerations, and on fully addressing the hard technical and oft cultural elements of making change happen. Further, the approach doesn’t just focus on delivering change; it builds an organization’s muscle to continuously change, making it healthier so that it can act with increased speed and agility to stay perpetually ahead of its competition. Leaders looking for a proven approach to leading large-scale change from a trusted source have found what they are looking for in Beyond Performance 2.0.

The Joyful Wisdom Book Review:

The Joyful Wisdom, written in 1882, just before "Zarathustra," is rightly judged to be one of Nietzsche's best books. Here the essentially grave and masculine face of the poet-philosopher is seen to light up and suddenly break into a delightful smile. The warmth and kindness that beam from his features will astonish those hasty psychologists who have never divined that behind the destroyer is the creator, and behind the blasphemer the lover of life. In the retrospective valuation of his work which appears in "Ecce Homo" the author himself observes with truth that the fourth book, "Sanctus Januarius," deserves especial attention: "The whole book is a gift from the Saint, and the introductory verses express my gratitude for the most wonderful month of January that I have ever spent."

Penguin Classics Beyond Good and Evil Book Review:

One of the most iconoclastic philosophers of all time, the author dramatically rejected notions of good and evil, truth and God. With wit and subversive energy, he demands that the individual impose their own 'will to power' upon the world. This book demonstrates that the world is steeped in false piety and infected with a 'slave morality'.

Good to Great Book Review:

The Challenge Built to Last, the defining management study of the nineties, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the DNA of an enterprise from the verybeginning. But what about the company that is not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness? The Study For years, this question preyed on the mind of Jim Collins. Are there companies that defy gravity and convert long-term mediocrity or worse into long-term superiority? And if so, what are the universal distinguishing characteristics that cause a company to go from good to great? The Standards Using tough benchmarks, Collins and his research team identified a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. How great? After the leap, the good-to-great companies generated cumulative stock returns that beat the general stock market by an average of seven times in fifteen years, better than twice the results delivered by a composite index of the world's greatest companies, including Coca-Cola, Intel, General Electric, and Merck. The Comparisons The research team contrasted the good-to-great companies with a carefully selected set of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. What was different? Why did one set of companies become truly great performers while the other set remained only good? Over five years, the team analyzed the histories of all twenty-eight companies in the study. After sifting through mountains of data and thousands of pages of interviews, Collins and his crew discovered the key determinants of greatness -- why some companies make the leap and others don't. The Findings The findings of the Good to Great study will surprise many readers and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice. The findings include: Level 5 Leaders: The research team was shocked to discover the type of leadership required to achieve greatness. The Hedgehog Concept (Simplicity within the Three Circles): To go from good to great requires transcending the curse of competence. A Culture of Discipline: When you combine a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship, you get the magical alchemy of great results. Technology Accelerators: Good-to-great companies think differently about the role of technology. The Flywheel and the Doom Loop: Those who launch radical change programs and wrenching restructurings will almost certainly fail to make the leap. “Some of the key concepts discerned in the study,” comments Jim Collins, "fly in the face of our modern business culture and will, quite frankly, upset some people.” Perhaps, but who can afford to ignore these findings?

Beyond Theze Wallz Book Review:

This book is a poetic autobiography chronicling the author's life while growing up in the segregated South during the volatile yet liberating sixties and seventies; his eventual move out west to California; his subsequent incarceration, and introduction to the State of California penal system; which culminated into his necessary atonement; release, and his eventual, remarkable re-indoctrination into mainstream American Society. This author's ability to recall and pen those compelling and transformationing moments literally draws and holds the reader in suspense and in anticipation as each chapter is approached. The gifting he carried with him into those prisons, (creative writing), was nurtured and matured into some of the most soul stirring, educational and inspirational poetry penned in our present time! The famous quotes and euphemistic sayings of various poets, literary scholars and people of renown placed perfectly during suspenseful episodes in this book further compels the reader to reflect upon the wisdom contained in it. The title of the book, "Beyond Theze Wallz," is representative of the prison walls faced by the author and others while there, yet speaks metaphorically of the invisible walls that many of us never see. Those walls that are erected in us due to the things we are exposed to as children in our families and communities, that tend to impede or stop us from attaining our innermost dreams and desires in life. The author's clever descriptions of his own reckless wanderings from good to bad; from right to wrong; from light to darkness, and the arduous task of returning to, and surrendering to the very best in himself again through the daily conscious connection with his CREATOR penetrates the heart and leaves an indelible impact on the very soul of any discerning reader. As a preview into how the book begins and a view of the kind of energy that sustains it; this is how it ends, with this poem," Beyond Theze Wallz" "BEYOND THEZE WALLZ" When we were born, we came into this world blank or empty, the things around us made impressions on you and me. We did not choose our families, cities, or communities, yet these things shaped us all with very unique idiosyncrasies. The way we talk, walk, our manners like thank you and please, the food that we like, no mayo, mustard, pickles and cheese. If we were born into homes of hate, hate is what we see intently, if we were born into peace, peace we pursue relentlessly. If we were born into dysfunction, molestation or abuse, this can last for generations if we don't decide to call a truce. If my grandfather was a pimp, and my mother was a prostitute, this can go on forever if we are not given a better substitute. Generations of men and women in and out of these prisons, more time in there than out, creating major family schisms. So with this poem I make a mass appeal to us all, let us do all the work we must do to get "BEYOND THEZE WALLZ." KBA
