Neurotoxic Factors in Parkinson s Disease and Related Disorders Book Review:

This book stems from the 2nd Parkinson's Disease Symposium on Neurotoxic Factors in Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders, held on Augus 6-7, 1999 at the University of Ulm Medical School in Ulm at the Danube in Germany. The specific topic, neurotoxic factors in Parkinson's Disease, involves neurobiological, epidemiological and environmental factors that bring to light this second most common neurodegenerative disorder. This work is compiled by leading researchers in neurodegeneration from around the world, making it a unique, comprehensive, and useful publication.

Parkinson s Disease and Related Disorders Book Review:

This volume provides a complete guide to advancements made in the understanding of Parkinson's disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. From information on early research conducted in the 1960's, to modern clinical views of these diseases, this handbook will give clinicians and neuroscientists a state-of-the-art reference that presents critical appraisals on recent developments in the study of these disorders. As the world population in developed countries ages, these observations are particularly relevant. Dramatic data on the genetic causes of dominant and recessive forms of hereditary Parkinson's disease are presented, as well as new knowledge on the differences in the intricate circuitry of basal ganglia in healthy individuals and those afflicted with Parkinson's. Clinicians will find this to be a great platform on which to base ongoing investigative approaches and research. * A complete guide to the advances made in the field of neurogenerative disorders, including Parkinson's * A comprehensive accounting of the parkinsonian disorders, including pharmacological advances, patient management techniques, and therapeutic strategies * Critical appraisals of recent developments in the field that further clinical research and foster new investigative approaches

Parkinson s Disease and Nonmotor Dysfunction Book Review:

Parkinson’s Disease and Nonmotor Dysfunction fills a major gap in the current rapidly growing body of knowledge concerning Parkinson’s disease. Drs. Pfeiffer and Bodis-Wollner have correctly perceived that many nonmotor features of Parkinson’s disease are given insufficient attention in the medical literature. Unfortunately, they are often also given insufficient attention by the practicing neurologists who see these patients. As recently pointed out, there is clearly much more to Parkinson’s disease than depletion of the nigrostriatal dopamine system (1). Parkinson’s disease (not just m- tiple system atrophy) is a multisystem disorder, both pathologically and in its clinical manifestations. This is clearly true for the various motor system abnormalities, which are not fully corrected by dopamine replacement therapy strategies, but also for the nonmotor system abnormalities that are the subject of this volume. Although recently there has been increased awareness of the cognitive, psychiatric, and sleep disorders commonly associated with Parkinson’s disease, many of their manifestations remain under-recognized and their importance in managing patients is underestimated. Even less attention is paid to the myriad of other nonmotor disturbances that plague these patients. For example, among the autonomic disorders, although orthostatic hypotension is well recognized, it is usually attributed to dopaminergic medications rather than to effects of the underlying disease. Urologic disorders are also very familiar in these patients, but may not be properly understood or well managed.

An Atlas of Parkinson s Disease and Related Disorders Book Review:

Any discussion of the clinical characteristics of Parkinson's disease must take into account the inaccuracies of clinical diagnosis. In a successive series of 100 patients with a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, only 76 fulfilled the criteria for diagnosis at post-mortem examination. Attempts to tighten the diagnostic criteria lead to increased specificity but with reduced sensitivity. In An Atlas of Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders Dr. David Perkin has compiled a series of photographs highlighting various aspects of Parkinson's disease and related motor disorders. The book provides a useful sample of clinical, investigative (CT, MRI, and PET) and pathological images with succinct descriptive text of the disorders featured. Approximately one-third of the material in this book is pathological, incorporating both macroscopic and microscopic sections. A further quarter of the material is represented by imaging, principally magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning. The area of movement disorders has been particularly fruitful for PET scanning, which promises, with the development of specific ligands for the various receptor sites, to further expand understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of the movement disorders. Reflecting the highest standards clinical photography and imaging along with the distinguished author's expert knowledge of the subject, Dr. Perkin's An Atlas of Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders is the definitive and essential clinical reference in its field.

Parkinson s Disease Book Review:

Parkinson’s Disease: Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Pathology explores the molecular pathways at the basis of the cellular defects connected to Parkinson’s disease, the second most common neurodegenerative disease, and the most common movement disorder. This book presents the latest research on the pathways and mechanisms that have been discovered to play a role in Parkinson's pathology. This focus on mechanisms rather than individual genes allows the contributors to elaborate on overlapping and joint functions of different causative genes. Readers will find descriptions of model systems that present parallels (and differences) between discoveries in different species, demonstrating the importance of multidisciplinary research that spans a broad array of technologies and model organisms. Written from both a cross-methodology and cross-species perspective, the book provides readers with the current state of knowledge on the molecular biology of Parkinson’s. Written by experts in the field that focus on pathways and mechanisms implicated in Parkinson’s pathology Draws parallels between multidisciplinary discoveries in different model organisms using an array of technologies Provides a cross-methodology and cross-species approach to understanding the molecular biology of Parkinson’s disease Includes approximately 25 color Illustrations and diagrams to explain concepts and models Focuses on key pathways and mechanisms (as opposed to model organism or gene) to provide a multidisciplinary approach to Parkinson’s disease
