Offshore Wind Turbine End of Life Scenarios Book Review:

Offshore Wind Turbine End of Life Scenarios: Service Life Extension and Decommissioning provides all the information required to make considered decisions about what will happen when wind turbines reach the end of their nominated life span. The book outlines a holistic approach to wind turbine asset assessment as a foundation for end of service life planning. The first two chapters introduce the topic of wind turbine end of life scenarios and review relevant legislation and standards, as well as outlining decision criteria and methods for techno economic assessment. After a chapter on supply chain issues, the authors then go on to cover the scenario of service life extension, from design and inspection to certification. This is followed by a chapter on decommissioning, once again from design of the process to recycling. The requirements of certifying authorities and insurers are then discussed, leading to a chapter on environmental impact assessment, which considers pre and post mortem inspection and environmental life cycle assessment. Readers are then presented with a series of case studies to illustrate the principles discussed in the preceding chapters. A summary and conclusions complete the book. This book is a unique and essential resource for all those who are required to assess wind turbine assets and make decisions on wind turbine end of life scenarios. First book to address this crucial topic, meeting the need for a consolidated source of information in this area Includes case studies to illustrate the methods proposed Gives practical advice on technical considerations for wind turbine service life extension and decommissioning, as well as covering the requirements of external stakeholders, such as certification authorities, insurers and environmental agencies

Soft Computing in Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics of Electrical and Mechanical Systems Book Review:

This book addresses a range of complex issues associated with condition monitoring (CM), fault diagnosis and detection (FDD) in smart buildings, wide area monitoring (WAM), wind energy conversion systems (WECSs), photovoltaic (PV) systems, structures, electrical systems, mechanical systems, smart grids, etc. The book’s goal is to develop and combine all advanced nonintrusive CMFD approaches on a common platform. To do so, it explores the main components of various systems used for CMFD purposes. The content is divided into three main parts, the first of which provides a brief introduction, before focusing on the state of the art and major research gaps in the area of CMFD. The second part covers the step-by-step implementation of novel soft computing applications in CMFD for electrical and mechanical systems. In the third and final part, the simulation codes for each chapter are included in an extensive appendix to support newcomers to the field.

Life Cycle Assessment of a Multi use Offshore Platform Combining Wind and Wave Energy Production Book Review:

Abstract: Due to increasing demand in the use of ocean space for energy and food production, multi-purpose use of marine areas is under concern. Here, a novel semi-submersible floating platform, which unites wave and wind energy converters, is investigated in terms of environmental sustainability. LCA is a methodology, to assess environmental burdens of a product/function including all the phases it experiences, which makes it a perfect tool to determine environmental burdens of renewable energy systems due to their considerably lower impacts during operation. In this study, LCA of an energy farm, constituted of multi-use offshore platforms was executed. Results showed manufacturing of the platform is the main source of pollution. In the manufacturing phase; fixed, moving and mooring parts are the main contributors and the WECs make a minor contribution. Material consumption is the main source for burdens during the life cycle of the system hence recycling ratios considered at the end of life scenarios affect the overall results. Implementation of multi-use floating concept to different locations gives various results changing with the capacity factor and the distances. The comparison between semi-submersible system and the spar platform ended up with comparable results both in terms of environmental burdens and material consumption. Highlights: LCA of a multi-use offshore platform design for Atlantic conditions is executed. Manufacturing of the platform is the biggest source of pollution. Wave energy converters has a small contribution on environmental burdens. Results of the study are sensitive to the recycle ratio. Results of the study are sensitive to the location of the energy farm.
