The development of lightweight, flexible wings to improve the performance of an aircraft has been a desire of aircraft engineers since the dawn of the aerospace industry. For many years, wings have been designed stiff to counteract flutter and to meet the need for high speeds. Ailerons and flaps are primarily used for controlling the maneuverability of an aircraft. However, the mechanical actuation systems for these devices contribute significant weight to the wings and thus limit the performance of an aircraft. To reduce weight and increase the maneuverability of an aircraft, a wing morphing technique is proposed in this paper. This technique assumes that the wing structure is flexible enough to allow the wing to twist or bend to control the maneuverability of an aircraft without using ailerons or flaps. However, flexible wings require energy to deform and flutter is still a very important issue that needs to be addressed for flexible wings. Hence, the relationship between the degree of flexibility to meet stated performance requirements and both the desire for minimum control energy and the requirement for flutter avoidance is explored in this research. The research was conducted to determine how wing structural stiffness affects the energy required to deform the wing and to give insight into its performance range for which flutter is to be avoided. The study incorporates structural and aerodynamic modeling, control-design optimization, and a candidate wing morphing technology. The results provide important information that designers of morphing wings can consult to explore the potential benefits of morphing wing technology.

Over the next few years the aviation industry will face the challenge to develop a new generation of air vehicles characterised by high aerodynamic efficiency and low environmental impact. The technologies currently available, however, are inadequate to meet the demanding performance requirements and to comply with the stringent regulations in terms of polluting emissions. An innovative and very promising solution is offered by airframe morphing technologies. Morphing wing structures, internally actuated and able to change their shape smoothly to adapt to different loading conditions, would be able to achieve near-optimal lift and drag profiles throughout all the different phases of the flight. This would enhance the aircraft aerodynamic performance and contribute to a significant reduction of the fuel consumption, polluting emissions and noise. The present study has been conducted as part of the European Commission founded Seventh Framework Program called \Smart High Lift Device for the Next Generation Wing" (SADE). The aim of this research is the development of an effective design of a morphing ap with flexible trailing edge for a commercial aircraft wing. The investigation focused on morphing concepts which are suitable for large transport aircraft and which can be effectively developed and become operational within the next 20 years. The following work summarizes the development of shape-adaptive airfoil profiles for wind turbine application. The underlying motivation of this work is the potential cost effectiveness of wind power conversion through the introduction of shape-adaptive airfoils in future wind turbine blades. The employment of shape adaption system in the wind turbine blade geometry would facilitate a more efficient power harvesting for the next generation of smart wind turbines. In the scope of this work, the concepts of the dedicated shape-adaptive airfoil profiles for wind turbine application are investigated in light of their aerodynamic performances. The concepts of the actuation system are developed while taking pre-defined design boundary conditions suitable for wind turbine application into consideration. A novel numerical approach is developed towards the simulation of fluid-structure interaction for prototype shape-adaptive airfoils. The numerical scheme is employed in designing the shape-adaptive blade prototypes. Effort has been given to develop a unique actuator system for wind turbine application. In a next step, experimental investigations are carried out to quantize the aerodynamic flow-field around the shape-adaptive airfoils. Parallelly, experimental investigations are carried out on a rigid NACA 0012 airfoil to log its performance at different stagger angles. In a further step, numerical investigations are carried out on the different airfoil configurations. Finally, performance analyses of the airfoils are carried out. The shape-adaptive airfoils outperform the rigid NACA 0012 airfoil for the desired performance envelope.
