There are books aplenty on materials selection criteria for engineering design. Most cover the physical and mechanical properties of specific materials, but few offer much in the way of total product design criteria. This innovative new text/reference will give the “Big picture view of how materials should be selected—not only for a desired function but also for their ultimate performance, durability, maintenance, replacement costs, and so on. Even such factors as how a material behaves when packaged, shipped, and stored will be taken into consideration. For without that knowledge, a design engineer is often in the dark as to how a particular material used in particular product or process is going to behave over time, how costly it will be, and, ultimately, how successful it will be at doing what is supposed to do. This book delivers that knowledge. * Brief but comprehensive review of major materials functional groups (mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical) by major material categories (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites) * Invaluable guidance on selection criteria at early design stage, including such factors as functionality, durability, and availability * Insight into lifecycle factors that affect choice of materials beyond simple performance specs, including manufacturability, machinability, shelf life, packaging, and even shipping characteristics * Unique help on writing materials selection specifications

This book describes the growing field of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) as applied to materials selection in product design. Useful in academic and research contexts, as well as to practitioners in materials engineering and design, it aids readers in producing successful designs by improving the decision-making process in materials selection. It is a constant challenge for designers, even when educated in the fundamentals of materials and mechanical engineering, to select the best materials to satisfy complex design problems. Current approaches to materials selection range from the use of intuition and experience to computer-based methods including electronic databases and search engines. Increasingly, MCDM methods are proving effective in materials selection for complex design problems. These methods supplement existing quantitative methods, such as selection charts, by allowing simultaneous consideration of design attributes, component configurations and types of material. Discusses the rationale for optimal materials selection in the context of achieving the best engineering design Describes methodologies for supporting enhanced decision-making in materials selection Includes end-of-chapter review questions and practical case studies from biomedical and aerospace engineering applications

Soft material-enabled electronics offer distinct advantage, over conventional rigid and bulky devices, for numerous wearable and implantable applications. Soft materials allow for seamless integration with skin and tissues due to enhanced mechanical flexibility and stretchability. Wearable devices, such as sensors, offer continuous, real-time monitoring of biosignals and movements, which can be applied in rehabilitation and diagnostics, among other applications. Soft implantable electronics offer similar functionalities, but with improved compatibility with human tissues. Biodegradable soft implantable electronics are also being developed for transient monitoring, such as in the weeks following surgery. To further advance soft electronics, materials, integration strategies, and fabrication techniques are being developed. This paper reviews recent progress in these areas, toward the development of soft material-enabled electronics for medicine, healthcare, and human-machine interfaces.

This student-friendly text is endorsed by Edexcel and matched to the specification unit by unit. To help students make the step up from GCSE the book is divided into an AS section and an A2 section, reflecting the greater challenges of the A2 year. The book is organised into two halves. The AS section uses double page spreads and easier language, to give students the confidence in making the difficult step up from studying at GCSE level. A2 work is written in chapters, at exactly the level needed to achieve this qualification. Each unit begins with a summary explaining what is expected and how it will be assessed. By giving students plenty of advice on what examiners are looking for, we help them prepare thoroughly to do their best in this qualification.A student checklist at the end of each unit is ideal for revision. Practice exam questions are included to give students even more confidence in those units which are assesed by a written paper.Focused practical tasks and homework suggestions appear throughout the book. Where any of the activities are likely to lead to students producing evidence for their Key Skills portfolio, this is highlighted clearly. Two coursework units in the book will give advice to students about the coursework part of the qualification. Also included are examples of the student work done during the Edexcel pilot for this specification, so readers can see the type of work required.

In engineering, there are often situations in which the material of the main component is unable to sustain long life or protect itself from adverse operating environments. Moreover, in some cases, different material properties such as anti-friction and wear, anti-corrosive, thermal resistive, super hydrophobic, etc. are required as per the operating conditions. If those bulk components are made of such materials and possess those properties, the cost will be very high. In such cases, a practical solution is surface coating, which serves as a protective barrier to the bulk material from the adverse environment. In the last decade, with enormous effort, researchers and scientists have developed suitable materials to overcome those unfavorable operating conditions, and they have used advanced deposition techniques to enhance the adhesion and surface texturing of the coatings. Advanced Surface Coating Techniques for Modern Industrial Applications is a highly sought reference source that compiles the recent research trends in these new and emerging surface coating materials, deposition techniques, properties of coated materials, and their applications in various engineering and industrial fields. The book particularly focuses on 1) coating materials including anti-corrosive materials and nanomaterials, 2) coating methods including thermal spray and electroless disposition, and 3) applications such as surface engineering and thin film application. The book is ideal for engineers, scientists, researchers, academicians, and students working in fields like material science, mechanical engineering, tribology, chemical and corrosion science, bio-medical engineering, biomaterials, and aerospace engineering.

This book presents a step-by-step discussion of the design and development of radio frequency identification (RFID) and RFID-enabled sensors on flexible low cost substrates for UHF frequency bands. Various examples of fully function building blocks (design and fabrication of antennas, integration with ICs and microcontrollers, power sources, as well as inkjet-printing techniques) demonstrate the revolutionary effect of this approach in low cost RFID and RFID-enabled sensors fields. This approach could be easily extended to other microwave and wireless applications as well. The first chapter describes the basic functionality and the physical and IT-related principles underlying RFID and sensors technology. Chapter two explains in detail inkjet-printing technology providing the characterization of the conductive ink, which consists of nano-silver-particles, while highlighting the importance of this technology as a fast and simple fabrication technique especially on flexible organic substrates such as Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) or paper-based substrates. Chapter three demonstrates several compact inkjet-printed UHF RFID antennas using antenna matching techniques to match IC's complex impedance as prototypes to provide the proof of concept of this technology. Chapter four discusses the benefits of using conformal magnetic material as a substrate for miniaturized high-frequency circuit applications. In addition, in Chapter five, the authors also touch up the state-of-the-art area of fully-integrated wireless sensor modules on organic substrates and show the first ever 2D sensor integration with an RFID tag module on paper, as well as the possibility of 3D multilayer paper-based RF/microwave structures. In recent years, the fabrication technologies for the production of advanced polymer composites have been revolutionised by sophisticated manufacturing techniques. These methods have enabled polymer composite materials to produce good quality laminates with minimal voids and accurate fibre alignment. This book familiarises and provides a background to the understanding and use of advanced polymer composites in the civil infrastructure; numerous examples have been provided to illustrate the use and versatility of the material. Furthermore, the book discusses the current fabrication techniques, design methods and formulae for the design of structural composite systems. In addition it discusses the fundamentals of geosynthetics used in geotechnical engineering. The book introduces the fibres and matrices that are used to manufacture composites, their mechanical and in-service properties and their long term loading characteristics; all these properties are specifically associated with the construction industry. The chapters then discuss the design aspects for 'all composite' units, as well as systems used for the renewal of civil infrastructure. Finally, the book demonstrated the unique possibilities of combining composites with conventional materials to form units in which the various materials making up the unit are loaded in the mode that specifically suits their mechanical characteristics.

Integrated Design of Multiscale, Multifunctional Materials and Products is the first of its type to consider not only design of materials, but concurrent design of materials and products. In other words, materials are not just selected on the basis of properties, but the composition and/or microstructure iw designed to satisfy specific ranged sets of performance requirements. This book presents the motivation for pursuing concurrent design of materials and products, thoroughly discussing the details of multiscale modeling and multilevel robust design and provides details of the design methods/strategies along with selected examples of designing material attributes for specified system performance. It is intended as a monograph to serve as a foundational reference for instructors of courses at the senior and introductory graduate level in departments of materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and civil engineering who are interested in next generation systems-based design of materials. First of its kind to consider not only design of materials, but concurrent design of materials and products Treatment of uncertainty via robust design of materials Integrates the "materials by design approach" of Olson/Ques Tek LLC with the "materials selection" approach of Ashby/Granta Distinquishes the processes of concurrent design of materials and products as an overall systems design problem from the field of multiscale modeling Systematic mathematical algorithms and methods are introduced for robust design of materials, rather than ad hoc heuristics--it is oriented towards a true systems approach to design of materials and products

The book summarizes the history and current status of the development of gas turbine engines and ancillary equipment using ceramic hot section components. Specifically, the book focuses on the evolution of component and engine designs, and the demonstration of design concepts through rig and engine testing of the ceramic gas turbine programs in the United States, Japan, Western Europe, and the countries of the former Soviet Union (primarily Russia). The 33 chapters cover ceramic gas turbine design in small gas turbines for automotive and cogeneration applications, midsize industrial and larger utility gas turbines, and aircraft and aeroderivative applications. Almost all the book chapters have been prepared by technical personnel who are intimately involved in the development and demonstration of the ceramic gas turbine designs at their companies. The book will be of interest to engineering and management personnel at turbomachinery equipment manufacturers, development and fabrication personnel at suppliers of ceramic materials and components, researchers in government and private laboratories, teaching staff and students at technical colleges and universities, and personnel involved in planning and monitoring technology development programs. The theme emphasized throughout the book are the 'lessons learned' from almost 40 years of ceramic gas turbine design and test experience. Learning directly from the experience of the researchers that took the ceramic gas turbine through the concept, preliminary, and detail design phases, while following the literative design-test process cycles, is a unique way of becoming quickly familiar with the design challenges and solutions for using ceramics in gas turbine equipment. The book also amply demonstrates the hurdles that had to be overcome to generate functional and durable component design, as well as challenges that remain for the full-scale commercialization of the ceramic gas turbine.
