Love Letters in the Sand Book Review:

This compelling novel portrays a woman’s personal odyssey to self-fulfillment. Lindsay Lawrence, a society portrait painter and recent widow, longs to heal memories of her marriage and focus on her career. She lives a comfortable, insular life in the stately brick townhouse she shared with her husband and daughter on Boston’s historic Beacon Hill—until an unexpected encounter with Les, an attractive drifter, changes everything. At first, Les conceals his rage at where life has taken him. After wandering from one odd job to another, especially in the Middle East, he now wants to settle down. Knowing he can neither emulate nor support her lifestyle, Les spirits Lindsay away from Boston and, in the process, opens her eyes to the world. In Abu Dhabi, she learns about the lives of Arabian women. Living with him in a village on Cyprus and interacting with local women, Lindsay discovers her life’s purpose. Lindsay’s gratitude to Les for leading her to become someone she never anticipated, unfortunately, comes with ambivalence. Will his erratic behavior preclude his being part of the new life she is creating on an island in the Mediterranean? Can their passionate relationship endure? Or will it vanish, fleetingly, like love letters written in the sand?

The 50 Greatest Love Letters of All Time Book Review:

If a picture speaks a thousand words, a love letter speaks a thousand more . . . Even in this age of e-mail, faxes, and instant messaging, nothing has ever replaced the power of a love letter. Much the way light displays every color when passed through a prism, love letters express the spectrum of our emotions, offering a colorful glimpse into the soul of the writer, and of the writer’s beloved. For passionate readers and lovers of words, a letter is irresistible. Internationally renowned collector David Lowenherz sifted through hundreds and hundreds of historical and contemporary epistles and selected the most ardent, witty, whimsical, sexy, clever, and touching letters for this inspiring collection. Unlike interviews or biographies, these letters give us marvelous insight into the lives of some of history’s most famous lovers and provide intimate glimpses into the hearts of some whose fervent or amusing expressions of devotion will come as a great surprise. A Love Letter in Cuneiform Book Review:

Set in Czechoslovakia between the 1940s and the 1990s, Tomáš Zmeškal’s stimulating novel focuses on one family’s tragic story of love and the unspoken. Josef meets his wife, Kveta, before the Second World War at a public lecture on Hittite culture. Kveta chooses to marry Josef over their mutual friend Hynek, but when her husband is later arrested and imprisoned for an unnamed crime, Kveta gives herself to Hynek in return for help and advice. The author explores the complexities of what is not spoken, what cannot be said, the repercussions of silence after an ordeal, the absurdity of forgotten pain, and what it is to be an outsider. In Zmeškal’s tale, told not chronologically but rather as a mosaic of events, time progresses unevenly and unpredictably, as does one’s understanding. The saga belongs to a particular family, but it also exposes the larger, ongoing struggle of postcommunist Eastern Europe to come to terms with suffering when catharsis is denied. Reporting from a fresh, multicultural perspective, Zmeškal makes a welcome contribution to European literature in the twenty-first century.

Alternative Japanese Drama Book Review:

"This collection, while offering a mass of information about the period and its drama, also stands as a memorial.... The brave new days of the 1960s are past and it is good to have this book to remind us of them." --Japan Times A major renaissance in Japanese theater occurred in the 1960s. During this period, the implications of Japan's prewar actions as well as its postwar materialistic course were interrogated with fierce intensity. Nowhere was the depth and dynamism of this cultural questioning more clearly expressed than in theater. Fueling the explosion of seminal theater activity that took place was the generation of young artists who are the focus of Alternative Japanese Drama. Foreword by J. Thomas Rimer

A Sand Book Book Review:

"Mind-blowing." —Kim Gordon A Sand Book is a poetry collection in nine parts, a travel guide that migrates from wildfires to hurricanes, tweety bird to the president, lust to aridity, desertification to prophecy, and mother to daughter. It explores the negative space of what is happening to language and to consciousness in our strange and desperate times. From Hurricane Sandy to the murder of Sandra Bland to the massacre at Sandy Hook, from the sand in the gizzards of birds to the desertified mountains of Haiti, from Attar's Conference of the Birds to Chaucer's Parliament of Fowls to Twitter, a sand book is about change and quantification, the relationship between catastrophe and cultural transmission. It moves among houses of worship and grocery stores, flitters between geological upheaval and the weird weather of the Internet. In her long-awaited follow-up to Mercury, Reines has written her most ambitious work to date, but also her most visceral and satisfying.

Ella Minnow Pea Book Review:

An epistolary novel set on a fictional island off the South Carolina coastline, 'Ella Minnow Pea' brings readers to the hometown of Nevin Nollop, inventor of the pangram 'The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog'. Deified for his achievement in life, Nevin has been honored in death with a monument featuring his famous phrase. One day, however, the letter 'Z' falls from the monument, and some of the islanders interpret the missing tile as a message from beyond the grave. The letter 'Z' is banned from use. On an island where the residents pride them-selves on their love of language, this is seen as a tragedy. They are still reeling from the shock when another tile falls. And then another... In his charming debut, first published in 2001, Mark Dunn took readers on a journey through the eyes of Ella Minnow Pea, a young woman forced to create another clever turn of phrase in order to save the islanders’ beloved language.

Just Remember This Book Review:

I have completed this manuscript Just Remember This, or as American Pop Singers 1900-1950+, about music before the 1950s in America. It perhaps offers knowledge and insights not previously found in other musical reference books. I have moreover been working on this book very meticulously over the past twelve-plus years. It started as a bit of fun and gradually became serious as I began to listen along with the vocalists of popular music, of the era before 1950, essentially just before the dawn of rock and roll. If you can call it that! Indeed genre and labeling of American music started here, and then from everywhere. While the old adage of always starting from somewhere could be noted in every century, the 1900s had produced the technology. Understanding the necessity, more so, finds a curiosity on the part of a general public hungry for entertainment, despite 6 day work weeks, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II.
