Locomotive Book Review:

The Caldecott Medal Winner, Sibert Honor Book, and New York Times bestseller Locomotive is a rich and detailed sensory exploration of America’s early railroads, from the creator of the “stunning” (Booklist) Moonshot. It is the summer of 1869, and trains, crews, and family are traveling together, riding America’s brand-new transcontinental railroad. These pages come alive with descriptive details of the journey: the sounds, speed, and strength of the mighty locomotives; the work that keeps them moving; and the thrill of travel from plains to mountain to ocean. Come sit inside the caboose, feel the heat of the engine, watch the landscape race by. Come ride the rails, come cross the young country!

Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive Book Review:

Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive documents the role played by mechanical engineers in the development of locomotive design. The steam engine and the mechanical engineering profession both grew directly out of the Industrial Revolution's need for sources of power beyond that of men and animals. Invented in England when coal mining was being developed, the practical steam engine eventually found numerous applications in transportation, especially in railroad technology. J. Parker Lamb traces the evolution of the steam engine from the early 1700s through the early 1800s, when the first locomotives were sent to the United States from England. Lamb then shifts the scene to the development of the American steam locomotive, first by numerous small builders, and later, by the early 20th century, by only three major enterprises and a handful of railroad company shops. Lamb reviews the steady progress of steam locomotive technology through its pinnacle during the 1930s, then discusses the reasons for its subsequent decline.

Shay Patent and Direct Locomotive Catalog Book Review:

In 1877, Ephraim Shay designed a steam locomotive that featured a side-mounted set of cylinders. These in turn drove longitudinal shafts, which powered the wheels of both the locomotive and tender. This ¿geared locomotive¿ developed terrific tractive effort. The Lima Locomotive Works of Ohio, produced the first Shay locomotive in 1880. A little more than two decades later, when this catalog was produced, the company was producing three different classes of Shays. The last engine was built in 1945 and still operates at the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia. This reproduction catalog is a wonderful resource for the model railroader, train spotter, and rail enthusiast.

Improving the process of driving a locomotive of Decision Support Systems Book Review:

The training system is implemented with the use of the fuzzy classifier that represents fuzzy knowledge base, the input of which receives signals about current state of the traction rolling stock and of the environment. The results of the work allow implementing intelligent DSS in modern locomotives. This will enhance the level of safety and efficiency of driving a train.

The American Diesel Locomotive Book Review:

Introduced in the 1930s, efficient and adaptable diesel locomotives had all but displaced steam locomotives by 1960. This colorful photographic history examines the development, implementation, and operation of diesel locomotives from the gleaming pioneer Zephyrs of the '30s through today's 8000-horsepower beasts. In the course of examining the dawn and preeminence of diesel power, the author offers a glimpse of America's major railways -- both freight and passenger -- in stunning modern and period color photography. Manufacturers like EMD, Alco and GE are included. The final chapter describes the operation and maintenance of modern diesel locomotives, and an appendix lists where rail fans can see restored examples of early diesels today.

The Locomotive Dictionary Volume 2 Book Review:

Please note: this is volume 2 in a 2 volume set. You must purchase both volumes to have a complete copy of this book. In 1905, the American Railway Master mechanics Association adopted a resolution, authorizing the creation of ¿...an illustrated dictionary of each and every part used in the building of locomotives.¿ The result, edited by famed technical writer George Fowler and published by the railroad gazette, was nearly 700 pages long, and richly illustrated with photographs, etchings, and blueprints. The Locomotive Dictionary was a triumph, and became one of the definitive engineering references for the railroad industry during the steam age. This high-quality reprint of a first edition of this wonderful book, represents the first time in decades that it has been available to the public. Softbound in two volumes, it is a wonderful reference that no steam fan or model railroader should be without.
