L'efficacité des systèmes biphasiques liquide-liquide (organique-aqueux) a favorisé le transfert d'information génétique a été étudié. La méthode des fermenteurs étages, adaptée au milieu biphasique, a été développée pour l'obtention de recombinants capable de minéraliser le 4,4'-DCBP comme unique source de carbone et d'énergie. Bien que les voies métaboliques des composés biphényl chlorés et des chloro-benzoates soient complémentaires, il existe de nombreuses interactions métaboliques expliquant les difficultés à isoler un recombinant compétant. Ainsi, le seul transfert d'information génétique entre souches parentales doit s'accompagner de remaniement génétiques internes. A partir d'une analyse des équilibres chimiques sur lesquels reposent l'impédancemetrie indirecte, il a été démontré que l'absorption du CO2 (variation et sensibilité du signal) est régit par les paramètres alcalins (molarité, volume et concentration), la pression partielle en CO2, la température, et le débit d'air impose. Celle ci est cependant quantifiable, et peut donc permettre le suivi de la croissance microbienne. Par la suite, l'aération du système a permis l'oxygénation de la culture et la ventilation du CO2 produit, et donc le suivi en-ligne des micro-organisme aerobie stricte.
