Organic Synthesis Using Transition Metals Book Review:

Transition metals open up new opportunities for synthesis, becausetheir means of bonding and their reaction mechanisms differ fromthose of the elements of the s and p blocks. In the last twodecades the subject has mushroomed - established reactions areseeing both technical improvements and increasing numbers ofapplications, and new reactions are being developed. Thepracticality of the subject is demonstrated by the large number ofpublications coming from the process development laboratories ofpharmaceutical companies, and its importance is underlined by thefact that three Nobel prizes have been awarded for discoveries inthis field in the 21st Century already. Organic Synthesis Using Transition Metals, 2nd Editionconsiders the ways in which transition metals, as catalysts andreagents, can be used in organic synthesis, both for pharmaceuticalcompounds and for natural products. It concentrates on thebond-forming reactions that set transition metal chemistry apartfrom "classical" organic chemistry. Each chapter isextensively referenced and provides a convenient point of entry tothe research literature. Topics covered include: introduction to transition metals in organic synthesis coupling reactions C-H activation carbonylative coupling reactions alkene and alkyne insertion reactions electrophilic alkene and alkyne complexes reactions of alkyne complexes carbene complexes spanstyle="font-family: Symbol; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;"h/span3-or spanstyle="font-family: Symbol; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;"p/span-allyl-allyl complexes diene, dienyl and arene complexes cycloaddition and cycloisomerisation reactions For this second edition the text has been extensively revisedand expanded to reflect the significant improvements and advancesin the field since the first edition, as well as the large numberof new transition metal-catalysed processes that have come toprominence in the last 10 years – for example theextraordinary progress in coupling reactions using“designer” ligands, catalysis using gold complexes, newopportunities arising from metathesis chemistry, and C-H activation– without neglecting the well established chemistry of metalssuch as palladium. Organic Synthesis Using Transition Metals, 2nd Editionwill find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduates andpostgraduates working in organic synthesis, catalysis, medicinalchemistry and drug discovery. It is also useful for practisingresearchers who want to refresh and enhance their knowledge of thefield.

Fabric for Fashion Book Review:

This easily navigable resource provides over 125 swatches of the most recognized and widely used varieties of fabric, including natural fabrics such as cottons, silks, wools, and linens as well as artificial and synthetic fabrics like acetates, lyocells, nylons, and metallics to encourage consideration of not just the aesthetic appeal of various fabrics but also their structure, feel, and weight. Bound into a hardcover book, with descriptions and contextual illustrations alongside them, the fabrics are in their raw state, before bleaching, dying, or finishing, so that their properties can be observed without the distraction of color or pattern. With information on fibers, basic construction of fabrics, weights, construction, and weave comparison, the book will help student fashion designers to make informed textile choices based upon an understanding of raw materials together with the processes that make up a fabric. A useful glossary defines key terminology. The book will be useful for anyone who works with fabrics and is the ideal companion to the Fabric for Fashion book.

Pharmaceutical Drug Product Development and Process Optimization Book Review:

Pharmaceutical manufacturers are constantly facing quality crises of drug products, leading to an escalating number of product recalls and rejects. Due to the involvement of multiple factors, the goal of achieving consistent product quality is always a great challenge for pharmaceutical scientists. This volume addresses this challenge by using the Quality by Design (QbD) concept, which was instituted to focus on the systematic development of drug products with predefined objectives to provide enhanced product and process understanding. This volume presents and discusses the vital precepts underlying the efficient, effective, and cost effective development of pharmaceutical drug products. It focuses on the adoption of systematic quality principles of pharmaceutical development, which is imperative in achieving continuous improvement in end-product quality and also leads to reducing cost, time, and effort, while meeting regulatory requirements. The volume covers the important new advances in the development of solid oral dosage forms, modified release oral dosage forms, parenteral dosage forms, semisolid dosage forms, transdermal drug, delivery systems, inhalational dosage forms, ocular drug delivery systems, nanopharmaceutical products, and nanoparticles for oral delivery.

All Faithful People Book Review:

All Faithful People was first published in 1983. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. In 1924 Robert and Helen Lynd went to Middletown (Muncie, Indiana) to study American institutions and values. The results of their work are the classic studies Middletown (1929) and Middletown in Transition (1937). In the late 1970s a team of social scientists returned to Middletown to gauge the changes that have taken place in the fifty years since the Lynds' first visit. The Middletown III Project, by replicating the earlier work, in some cases by using the same questions, provides an unprecedented portrait of a small American town as it adapts to changing times. Its first report, Middletown Families, was published by Minnesota in 1982. This book explores the role of religion in the life of Middletown. Using the Lynds' magnificent cache of empirical data as a base, social scientists on the Middletown III Project attempted to gauge how religious beliefs and practices have changed. For the most part, their findings show that the current perception of a trend toward a more secular society is not true. In Middletown, religion seems to be more important than ever. All Faithful People also covers the history of Middletown's churches, the differences between the town's Protestants and Catholics, religious participation among young people, and the role in Middletown life of private devotions and public rituals. In conclusion, the authors of All Faithful People evaluate Middletown as a representative community. They attempt to explain the myth of the death of organized religion, and briefly compare religion in America to religion in other Western countries. Fifty years after the Lynds first made Middletown famous, a team of social scientists returned to find out how American values have changed. This, their second report, focuses on religion. What does religion mean to Middletown today? Has America become a secular society? Those are some of the questions discussed in All Faithful People.
