The Treasures of Islamic Art in the Museums of Cairo Book Review:

Masterpieces of every medium are represented, including the decorative arts of ceramics, metalwork, textiles, woodwork, glass, carved stone and ivory, and the art of the book. The objects vary from pieces made for purely secular purposes, many of them with blazons showing that they were the property of the great amirs of the time, to some of the choicest examples recovered from the architectural masterpieces that permeate Cairo's landscape.

Islamic Art in the Museum Book Review:

The purpose of this study is to examine the representation of Islamic art in museums in the last decade, compared to its representation before the events of 9/11. In order to give an overview of various exhibition designs throughout the world, three renowned museums are surveyed: the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Between 2003 and 2010-2011, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art renewed their galleries dedicated to Islamic art, while the Musée du Louvre created an entirely new department dedicated to Islamic Arts set to open in 2012. The author argues that these institutions' presentations of Islamic art are both modernized and Westernized. In a way, museums are exhibiting Islamic art without acknowledging Muslims or the religion of Islam; unconsciously a certain Orientalism (a term used by Edward Said), or neo-Orientalism, is taking place within these institutions. The data is gathered from visits to the galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as at the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo. Although the galleries at the Musée du Louvre have yet to be inaugurated, the author was able to collect information through an internship with the museum. Moreover, qualitative interviews were made at the Louvre, as well as with the designer who renovated the Cairene museum and with Islamic art experts in Cairo. Various museum publications were analyzed, ranging from catalogues issued in 1907 to the most recent publications in 2011. In conclusion, there is indeed an explicit will to represent Islam away from the stereotypes that have risen in the past decade. Although the intent is sincere, Islamic art remains undefined, a complex and adverse issue, which might actually result in the hardening of these stereotypes.

Structured as a guide, but fully illustrated with superb color photographs, this book suggests a simple but comprehensive itinerary through one of Egypt's most fascinating museums. Taking readers through the various exhibits, this useful guidebook explains and illuminates the aesthetic and historic importance of the museum's main works on display, including metalwork, textiles, woodwork, glass, carved stone and ivory, and the art of the book. Also included are sections on two other small but important Cairo museums: the Islamic Ceramics Museum and the Islamic Textiles Museum. Written by one of the leading authorities on Islamic art and architecture, and lavishly illustrated throughout with specially commissioned color photographs, this is the definitive guide to Egypt's great collections of Islamic art.

Islamic Art Book Review:

From the Alhambra to the Taj Mahal, from the Dome of the Rock to the ever evolving art of calligraphy, Barbara Brend traces the development of classic Islamic art from the seventh through the twentieth century. The term "Islamic art" suggests a unity of style and purpose, and these works are in fact instantly recognizable for their subtlety of line and sumptuous detail. The Islamic world--from Arabia to North Africa and Spain, from Turkey to Central Asia and India--has a shared cultural heritage of extraordinary richness. Yet it is a common tradition that divides into a diversity of styles. So Brend narrates this history region by region, illustrating her discussion with superb examples drawn from all areas in which Muslim artists and craftsmen have excelled--mosque and palace architecture; the art of the book (calligraphy, painting, and bindings); and the decorative arts, including metalwork, carvings, mosaics, pottery, textiles, and carpets.

Islamic Art and Architecture 650 1250 Book Review:

This richly illustrated book provides an unsurpassed overview of Islamic art and architecture from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries, a time of the formation of a new artistic culture and its first, medieval, flowering in the vast area from the Atlantic to India. Inspired by Ettinghausen and Grabar’s original text, this book has been completely rewritten and updated to take into account recent information and methodological advances. The volume focuses special attention on the development of numerous regional centers of art in Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Syria, Anatolia, Iraq, and Yemen, as well as the western and northeastern provinces of Iran. It traces the cultural and artistic evolution of such centers in the seminal early Islamic period and examines the wealth of different ways of creating a beautiful environment. The book approaches the arts with new classifications of architecture and architectural decoration, the art of the object, and the art of the book. With many new illustrations, often in color, this volume broadens the picture of Islamic artistic production and discusses objects in a wide range of media, including textiles, ceramics, metal, and wood. The book incorporates extensive accounts of the cultural contexts of the arts and defines the originality of each period. A final chapter explores the impact of Islamic art on the creativity of non-Muslims within the Islamic realm and in areas surrounding the Muslim world.

Power and Protection Book Review:

* Power and Protection is an innovative, beautifully illustrated account of the link between artistic production and divinatory practices in pre-modern and early modern Islamic societies* An exhibition of the same title will be displayed at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford from 20 October 2016 to 15 January 2017. It will tour to the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto in March to May 2017Power and Protection: Islamic Art and the Supernatural is a ground-breaking investigation of divinatory arts in the Islamic world discussing their impact on, and expression through, material culture. This part of the Islamic tradition has hitherto received limited attention, leaving a fascinating and rich chapter of Islam s cultural production largely unexplored. Essays by three leading experts contextualize over 100 extraordinary objects produced between the twelfth and the twentieth centuries - including personal ornaments, weaponry, textiles, miniature books, and scrolls - demonstrating the currency of astrology, geomancy, bibliomancy, dream interpretation, and the science of divination through letters at all levels of society. Insights gleaned from historical sources unveil and chart the animated debates surrounding divinatory 'sciences', reflecting changing attitudes towards these practices over the centuries.Thoroughly researched and richly illustrated, Power and Protection offers a stimulating and accessible introduction to this topic for the general reader as well as a fresh and well-balanced account for the specialist.

The Message the Monsoon Book Review:

Southeast Asia was part of the most important trade route the world had ever seen until the 20th century. From Aceh in the west of the Malay Archipelago to Mindanao in the east, there has been a steady exchange of commerce and culture. Most of all there is the influence of Islam. For the first time, a comprehensive selection of Islamic artefacts from Southeast Asia has been assembled to bring alive the history and culture of a region that has received little exposure. Divided into categories as diverse as weapons and woodwork, this catalogue lavishly illustrates the Islamic art of the region.

Islamic Art Book Review:

This stunning book offers an introduction to and an exceptional view of an imposing collection of arts from across the Islamic world, highlighting outstanding examples of design, workmanship and craft in paintings and manuscripts, calligraphy, metalwork, ceramics, jade, glass, wood and ivory. The book opens with an explanation of the characteristics common to artistic creativity stretching back to the seventh century, from Spain to Indonesia. Works of superlative quality are then organised into chapters relating to central themes such as religion and belief, the supernatural and natural worlds, feasting, the hunt, war, music and power. The author explores each magnificent artwork in turn, providing cultural context and pointing out special features. By showing the complete artwork as well as enlarged details - sometimes virtually invisible to the naked eye - intriguing comparisons can be drawn and juxtapositions made between seemingly unrelated media. The selection of illustrations evokes the hand and eye of the most accomplished artists of the Islamic world.
