Still Alive Book Review:

Swept up as a child in the events of Nazi-era Europe, Ruth Kluger saw her family's comfortable Vienna existence systematically undermined and destroyed. By age eleven, she had been deported, along with her mother, to Theresienstadt, the first in a series of concentration camps which would become the setting for her precarious childhood. Kluger's story of her years in the camps and her struggle to establish a life after the war as a refugee survivor in New York, has emerged as one of the most powerful accounts of the Holocaust. Interwoven with blunt, unsparing observations of childhood and nuanced reflections of an adult who has spent a lifetime thinking about the Holocaust, Still Alive rejects all easy assumptions about history, both political and personal. Whether describing the abuse she met at her own mother's hand, the life-saving generosity of a woman SS aide in Auschwitz, the foibles and prejudices of Allied liberators, or the cold shoulder offered by her relatives when she and her mother arrived as refugees in New York, Kluger sees and names an unexpected reality which has little to do with conventional wisdom or morality tales. Still Alive is a memoir of the pursuit of selfhood against all odds, a fiercely bittersweet coming-of-age story in which the protagonist must learn never to rely on comforting assumptions, but always to seek her own truth.

Rules for Vanishing Book Review:

In the faux-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project comes the campfire story of a missing girl, a vengeful ghost, and the girl who is determined to find her sister--at all costs. Once a year, a road appears in the forest. And at the end of it, the ghost of Lucy Gallows beckons. Lucy's game isn't for the faint of heart. If you win, you escape with your life. But if you lose.... Sara's sister disappeared one year ago--and only Sara knows where she is. Becca went to find the ghost of Lucy Gallows and is trapped on the road that leads to her. In the sleepy town of Briar Glen, Lucy's road is nothing more than local lore. But Sara knows it's real, and she's going to find it. When Sara and her skeptical friends meet in the forest to search for Becca, the mysterious road unfurls before them. All they have to do is walk down it. But the path to Lucy is not of this world, and it has its own rules. Every mistake summons new horrors. Vengeful spirits and broken, angry creatures are waiting for them to slip, and no one is guaranteed safe passage. The only certainty is this: the road has a toll and it will be paid. Sara knows that if she steps onto the road, she might not come back. But Becca needs her. And Lucy is waiting.

I Find It Grotesque That I Am Still Alive Book Review:

"I find it grotesque that I am still alive" is the true story of Richard Krebs. Under the pen name Jan Valtin he published in 1941 a hugely successful and just as controversial fictionalized autobiography. In "Out of the Night", Richard Krebs - a German by birth - recounted his years as sailor, revolutionary, inmate of San Quentin and agent of the Communist International. In 1933 he was caught in Hitler ́s Germany and incarcerated in a concentration camp. From there he managed to escape - or so he claimed - on the understanding that he would henceforth be a Gestapo man although he in fact remained under Soviet orders. Furthermore "Out of The Night" described the machinations of a huge underground structure behind the facade of the Communist International, and claimed that it was this structure, and not the visible party apparatus, that really directed the worldwide Communist movement. In the course of his research Ernst von Waldenfels interviewed the last surviving witnesses, including Krebs' widow. Consulting the archives of the Gestapo and the Communist International in Berlin and Moscow, and several times visiting the National Archives in Washington, he hit upon a story that was different but no less astonishing than the one that Richard Krebs had told in "Out of The Night". Ernst von Waldenfels has used a wealth of research material to write a fast- paced but nonetheless accurate real life thriller. It is a portrait of a fraught and chaotic era, of the high hopes that the Russian Revolution inspired in the men and women to whom revolution was a calling, and of how those hopes were finally dashed in Stalin's and Hitler's concentration camps. It is the story of a worldwide underground network that has only recently come to light, but most of all it is the story of a man who, despite all his capacities, fell foul of the times. The book has been a critical success in Germany, and its author has been interviewed by television and radio. Excerpts from reviews: Die Zeit: (leading German weekly) In the matter of the double games in which Krebs was involved whilst imprisoned by the Nazis, the biography has an intense quality that is at once both accurate and intuitive. Von Waldenfels investigates the double-dealings of a player incapable of grasping that he is a pawn to be sacrificed in the long-range duel between the Stalinist and the Nazi machines.SWR Public Radio Drawing on the archives of the Gestapo, the American secret services and hitherto unknown material from the Moscow Comintern, Ernst von Waldenfels has created a biography of the adventurer, author and agent Richard Krebs. ... Ernst von Waldenfels unravels this complex tale in a very thrilling way with sympathy for his protagonist. His biography, offers an explicit and inclusive description of the political scene of the 1920's and 30's.

Still Alive Book Review:

My brother and I always talked about the zombie apocalypse. What would we do? Where would we go? We never thought this would happen. These zombies aren't like what we saw in old horror movies. They are fast, strong, and intelligent. The worst part is they're not the undead - they're still living, breathing people. The first outbreak was in Ohio, but no one knows how or why it happened. All we know is that it happened, and we have to do whatever it takes to stay alive. So here I am, in a van with my brother, going to a place that we're not even sure exists. Who knows if we will make it there? Who knows if we'll even make it to tomorrow? All I know is my name is Cassie Sullivan and I'm still alive.

Thirteens Book Review:

Neil Gaiman's Coraline meets Stranger Things in a dark and twisted story about a sleepy town with a dark secret--and the three kids brave enough to uncover it. Every thirteen years in the town of Eden Eld, three thirteen-year-olds disappear. Eleanor has just moved to the quiet, prosperous Eden Eld. When she awakes to discover an ancient grandfather clock that she's never seen before outside her new room, she's sure her eyes must be playing tricks on her. But then she spots a large bird, staring at her as she boards the school bus. And a black dog with glowing red eyes follows her around town. All she wants is to be normal, and these are far from normal. And worse--no one else can see them. Except for her new friends, Pip and Otto, who teach her a thing or two about surviving in Eden Eld. First: Don't let the "wrong things" know you can see them. Second: Don't speak of the wrong things to anyone else. The only other clue they have about these supernatural disturbances is a book of fairytales unlike any they've read before. It tells tales of the mysterious Mr. January, who struck a cursed deal with the town's founders. Every thirteenth Halloween, he will take three of their children, who are never heard from again. It's up to our trio to break the curse--because Eden Eld's thirteen years are up. And Eleanor, Pip, and Otto are marked as his next sacrifice.

If You Were Still Alive Book Review:

It doesn't matter if you've lost someone you love six months ago or six years ago. It's a lie that time heals all wounds, because the pain never goes away. This book aims to make you feel less alone in your grief. It's meant to remind you of all those memories you locked deep down inside of yourself. But even more than that, it's meant to remind you that your loved ones are still alive inside of you, so they can never really die.

Objection, he’s still alive Book Review:

From the seemingly routine and mundane to the esoteric we accompany William Moore on his daily routines of a modern autopsy service where those who die are examined to protect the living. From the all too common cardiovascular death to the accidental fatal injuries and of course the tragic homicides this narrative takes the reader behind the scenes to examination of the dead and presentation of evidence to convict the guilty. “Pull up a chair and let’s get started then. You are here to discuss the motor vehicle – pedestrian hit-and-run that occurred on the Interstate up by the canal. This is the case where the fleeing motorist was pursued by witnesses who forced him to stop after he pulled onto the access road. Is that right?” “Doc, how do you remember all these cases?” asked the attorney. “Each death is unique and if I pay sufficient attention to the unique qualities I can generally recall them at least to some detail. Did you bring your tape recorders? Are we ready to get started?”

The Last Best Story Book Review:

A witty, fresh romantic comedy, set on one fateful prom night, about two high-schools seniors who can’t quite admit they are in love. Think E. Lockhart meets Katie Cotugno. It’s the end of senior year, and Rose Regnero is over it. She’s over chasing stories for a school newspaper no one reads. Over missing out on “normal” high school life. And most of all, over Grant Leitch: editor-in-chief, former close friend, never-quite-boyfriend. Now all she wants is a typical prom, complete with handsome date, fancy corsage, and dancing to cheesy pop songs. It’s the end of senior year, and Grant Leitch is in denial. He’s in denial about handing over the reins of the paper to an unworthy underclassman. In denial that Rose suddenly, inexplicably quit the paper and now won’t talk to him. But mostly he’s in denial that she is at prom with another guy, and it’s no one’s fault but his own. Grant’s only hope of luring Rose back to him (and the paper) is a juicy story she won’t be able to resist. In the end it takes a toga-wearing prom crasher, an emergency lockdown, a secret stalker, and a wild after-party to bring Grant and Rose together for one last story...and one final chance to admit that they’re made for each other.
