Wood Flour Composites of High Temperature Polymers by Reaction Induced Phase Separation Book Review:

The large gap between processing temperatures, typically 240-320°C, of high temperature thermoplastic polymers and decomposition temperatures of natural fillers (200°C) has worked against the development of natural-fiber reinforced composites of high temperature thermoplastic polymers, such as polyphenylene ether (PPE). A novel methodology was used in this study whereby a reactive solvent, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) was blended with PPE to reduce the processing temperature of the blends well below the decomposition temperature of natural fillers, in this case, wood flour. These composites were found to be lighter and their mechanical properties much stronger than conventional glass or carbon fibers-filled thermoplastic polymer blends. These composites exhibited lower moisture absorption and high dimensional stability on exposure to aqueous, alkaline and acidic media compared to conventional wood flour composites of polyolefins, polystyrene and, polyvinyl chloride. Crosslinked epoxy was found to form coating layers around wood flour particles in these composites, apparently due to reaction-induced phase separation caused by epoxy-amine reactions and by epoxy-cellulose reaction. Silane coupling agents when applied on wood particles retarded epoxy cellulose reactions and led to weakening of mechanical properties, although resorcinol coupling agent helped improved barrier to diffusion of moisture, acid and alkaline media.

The usefulness of any material, including nanocomposite polymer blends, depends on its degradability and durability. Thus, this chapter reviews the status of the research on degradation of nanocomposite polymer blends and, in particular, on clay-nanocomposite polymer blends, paying particular attention to both the role of the filler and the role of the blend morphology and composition. The results of recent research indicate that the clay has two opposing effects on the thermal stability of a nanocomposite polymer blend: (1) a promoter effect of the polymer matrix degradation, which decreases the thermal stability, and (2) a barrier effect, which improves the thermal stability. Moreover, the presence of organoclays generally reduces the photostability of nanocomposite polymer blends. Despite the effect of the filler, blend morphology and blend composition can significantly affect, either positively or negatively, the degradation behavior of the polymer blend nanocomposites.

Multicomponent polymeric systems, or polymeric blends, have recently created considerable interest and they represent a new and important challenge for research. These systems have already become technologically important, but the prospects for their applications have by no means been exhausted. For thermodynamic reasons polymer blends do not usually form homogeneous mixtures but exhibit micro or macrophase separation. This incompatibility has some inherent advantages as varying the composition and the processing conditions, materials with different structures and morphologies can be obtained whose properties may be superior to those of one of the components e. g. high impact resistant plastics. Investigations of multicomponent polymer systems constitute a new branch of macromolecular science which now claims as much interest as the behaviour of dilute solutions, crystallization, statistics of chain~~ tacticity, and single crystal formation did a few years ago. The complexity of the problems related to control led preparation and properties studies of mUlticomponent polymer systems is such that it is often more practicable to conduct them on an international basis. The aim of the first Joint Italian-Polish Seminar on Multicomponent Polymer Systems was to discuss recent results obtained in that field in both countries. As the range of topics to be covered was fairly wide, we thought it advisable to invite scientists from other countries to share with us some aspects of their own studies.
