Post acute and Long Term Geriatric Care Clinical Advisor Book Review:

Changing demographics have resulted in the elderly constituting a more significant proportion of the population. Many older people will develop functional impairment and disability, necessitating either support at home or admission to long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, psychiatric institutions and hospices. Guidance in the clinical challenges that face the staff of such institutions is essential. Clinical practice guidelines dealing with many of the prevalent conditions in long-term care facilities have been published by the American Medical Directors Association; these aim to educate staff, improve patient outcomes, decrease avoidable transfers and reduce costs. Yet, guidelines do not cater methodically to problems resulting from the complex situations seen in older patients with multiple comorbidities. Textbooks are also often deficient in providing a focused approach to conditions and issues that are of importance in geriatric long-term care. The present manuscript (Volumes I and II) focuses on case management in geriatric long-term care. Concise recommendations are provided, addressing diagnostic issues and management strategies. We have adopted an approach of dividing recommendations into do and do not categories in order to guide physicians and nurses in their approach to conditions encountered frequently, to help them recognize red flag signals, and to highlight significant unusual situations. When fine-tuning of management is indicated, the text goes into specifics, such as details on nutrition, pharmacology, medication dosing, therapeutic procedures, and the recognition of adverse events. Recent progress, shifting evidence, controversial issues and uncertainties are pinpointed. Expert advice is provided. It is hoped that this book might prove to be a worthy contribution to the medical field, enriching doctors and nurses committed to long-term geriatric care.

Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Book Review:

This book offers an up-to-date review on the principles and practice of multidimensional assessment and management of the older individual, which represents the cornerstone of modern clinical practice in the elderly. The early chapters cover the main elements and scope of the comprehensive geriatric approach and explain the pathways of care from screening and case finding through to in-depth assessment and treatment planning. Subsequent chapters review the evidence of how best to apply the multidimensional assessment and management approach in defined healthcare settings and within specific clinical areas, such as cancer and surgery. Finally, the education and training challenges are reviewed and the prospects for future clinical service and research in this important field are examined. The book is very timely given the recent advances in application of this approach, which reflect the growing international realization that older people are “core business” in many clinical areas where the role of specialist geriatric medicine has hitherto been limited. Accordingly, the book will be relevant to a wide range of clinicians. The authorship comprises many of the best known and widely published experts in their respective fields.

Linking Quality of Long Term Care and Quality of Life Book Review:

"This book grapples with some of the most significant issues in long-term care today--that is, becoming more explicit about what should be meant by terms like 'quality of care' and 'quality of Life.'" --Rosalie A. Kane, DSW, University of Minnesota "A major resource for all concerned about improving the future for the long-term handicapped." --Robert Morris, DSW This volume will strengthen our understanding of the relationship between providing care to the elderly and improving their quality of life. The contributors examine areas where systems can be improved from design to delivery. Specific topics include: enhancement of the self, efforts of regulatory and accrediting bodies to improve care, methods for evaluating quality, and implementing a holistic approach to care, among others. This book remains essential reading for professionals involved in long term care including assisted living and nursing home administrators, gerontologists, geriatricians, geriatric nurses, and social workers.
