Faces in the Clouds Book Review:

Religion is universal human culture. No phenomenon is more widely shared or more intensely studied, yet there is no agreement on what religion is. Now, in Faces in the Clouds, anthropologist Stewart Guthrie provides a provocative definition of religion in a bold and persuasive new theory. Guthrie says religion can best be understood as systematic anthropomorphism--that is, the attribution of human characteristics to nonhuman things and events. Many writers see anthropomorphism as common or even universal in religion, but few think it is central. To Guthrie, however, it is fundamental. Religion, he writes, consists of seeing the world as humanlike. As Guthrie shows, people find a wide range of humanlike beings plausible: Gods, spirits, abominable snowmen, HAL the computer, Chiquita Banana. We find messages in random events such as earthquakes, weather, and traffic accidents. We say a fire "rages," a storm "wreaks vengeance," and waters "lie still." Guthrie says that our tendency to find human characteristics in the nonhuman world stems from a deep-seated perceptual strategy: in the face of pervasive (if mostly unconscious) uncertainty about what we see, we bet on the most meaningful interpretation we can. If we are in the woods and see a dark shape that might be a bear or a boulder, for example, it is good policy to think it is a bear. If we are mistaken, we lose little, and if we are right, we gain much. So, Guthrie writes, in scanning the world we always look for what most concerns us--livings things, and especially, human ones. Even animals watch for human attributes, as when birds avoid scarecrows. In short, we all follow the principle--better safe than sorry. Marshalling a wealth of evidence from anthropology, cognitive science, philosophy, theology, advertising, literature, art, and animal behavior, Guthrie offers a fascinating array of examples to show how this perceptual strategy pervades secular life and how it characterizes religious experience. Challenging the very foundations of religion, Faces in the Clouds forces us to take a new look at this fundamental element of human life.

Faces in the Clouds Book Review:

Twin brothers Stephen and Lawrence Kennedy are army kids; theirs is a world of barracks, bunks and barbecues. But then their parents are killed in a car accident and the boys are sent to stay with people they barely know. How the boys live with their grief and with each other defines the rest of their lives. They move through adolescence and into adulthood, via girlfriends, jobs, sibling rivalry and loyalty. And somewhere deeply buried within them both is the question of how one deals with the past in order to live in the present and embrace the future. The answer is surprising.

Faces in the Clouds Book Review:

Faces In The Clouds Inspired from everyday relationships of friendships, love and family, I hope that these poems speak to the innocence lost and experience gained from living. Falling in love, getting hurt and/or disappointed in relationships can create new truths and understandings. I have tried to use my awakenings, triumphs, and failures as catalysts for destroying distorted visions that society placed in my view. It is through these new perceptions that I have torn down images that project women in roles that they are expected, allowed or prohibited from playing. My words have allowed me the freedom to express my anger, frustrations, anxiety as well as my sexuality unapologetically. Dr. Wanda Macon, Retired

We leave Ohio and go coast to coast in search of real world examples of big data and security. First stop is Glendale, California where we meet Dan Block, formerly DineEquity Executive Director of Human Resources. Dan takes us into the world of managing HR systems for Applebee¿s and IHOP. Logan Browne, Chief Technologist and Director, Cyber Security at Hewlett Packard Enterprise in Sacramento takes us behind the scenes of security precautions at one of the world¿s largest companies. North in Seattle, we visit with Microsoft¿s Bob Herbold. Bill Gate¿s COO gives his historical perspective on Big Data. Looking back to 1987, he discusses Procter and Gamble, Sam Walton, Walmart, and fresh flowers. Lastly, looking east, we take the red-eye to Dulles International to speak with William J. Pretties Book Review:

The second installment of Scott Westerfeld’s international bestselling Uglies series – the global phenomenon that started the dystopian trend. In Tally’s world, looks are all that matters. And now that she’s finally undertaken the surgery to become a ‘Pretty’, everything seems perfect: her looks are flawless, her clothes are cool, her boyfriend is totally gorgeous, and she's completely popular. But beneath the fun of non-stop parties, high-tech luxury and apparent total freedom, Tally can’t stop a nagging sense that something is wrong. Something important. Then a message from her ‘Ugly’ past arrives, forcing Tally to remember the truth she learned before her transformation, and the fun stops cold. Because the true price of this perfect world is more than Tally is willing to pay…

This Is Pleasure Book Review:

"In this powerful short fiction, Mary Gaitskill--whose searing honesty about gender relations has been legendary since the appearance of Bad Behavior in the 1980s--considers our moment through the lens of a particular #metoo incident. The effervescent and well-dressed Quin, a successful book editor and fixture on the New York arts scene, has long been one of Margot's best friends. When several women in his field accuse him of inappropriate touching and remarks, Gaitskill builds the account of his undoing through Quin and Margot's alternating voices, allowing readers to experience Quin as a whole person--one whose behavior toward women could be hurtful and presumptuous on the one hand, and keenly supportive on the other. Margot, an older woman who alternately despairs of and sympathizes with the positions of the younger women involved in Quin's case, is the thrumming engine of this remarkable piece of truthtelling. As Gaitskill has said, fiction is the only way that she could approach this subject, which she sees as subtly colored in shades of gray, rather than the black and white of our current conversations. Her compliment to her characters--and to her readers--is that they are unvarnished and real; her belief in our ability to understand them, even when we don't always admire them, is a beacon of humanity from one of our greatest contemporary writers"--

The Elephants in the Room Book Review:

As I sit and ponder on the goodness and the mercies of God, I hope these insights of facing the truth about the Elephants in the rooms of our lives will connect us to the peace of God. To get a clear understanding of what positions should be used to exercise Godly wisdom that will produce effective solutions that can deliver us from our fears, differences, and or challenges that we face daily is very important. I pray this book can be used as a mirror to look inside of your heart and soul to evaluate when, where and how God will use your circumstances for your good as well as show you how to respond to others without whispering, gossiping, slandering and or projecting negativity. Rather, it's my hope you will inspire an atmosphere that everyone can thrive in humility. For there is nothing impossible with God no matter how many Elephants are in the room!"

The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary Book Review:

Apart from "The Cloud upon the Sanctuary," Eckartshausen is a name only to the Christian Transcendentalists of England. He wrote much, and at his period and in his place, he exercised some considerable influence; but his other works are practically unknown among us, while in Germany the majority at least seem forgotten, even among the special class to which some of them might be assumed to appeal. "The Cloud upon the Sanctuary" has, I believe, always remained in the memory of a few, and is destined still to survive, for it carries with it a message of very deep significance to all those who look beneath the body of religious doctrine for the one principle of life which energizes the whole organism. This translation has offered it for the first time to English readers, and it enters here upon the third phase of its existence. A.E. Waite

Why Am I So Special Book Review:

Why Am I So Special? is the autobiography of Barry Henkin, a man whose kind heart, optimistic disposition, and encyclopedic memory for music and faces have enabled him to overcome the physical, mental, emotional, and societal obstacles that have confronted him since birth. Since 2011, Barry has been speaking to others faced with developmental challenges in the hope of motivating them to live their lives to their fullest potential. Having had the good fortune to happily work for a single employer for over three decades, Barry would also like to motivate employers and the greater community to provide more opportunities for people such as himself. The book has been written by Barry, with a little help from his friends, to enable him to deliver his message of hope and inspiration to a wider audience.
