Estimation of Time since Death in Australian Conditions Book Review:

Estimation of Time since Death in Australian Conditions collates data about decomposed bodies found in the eastern states of Australia from the years 2000 to 2010. The book takes into account that over 70% of decomposed bodies were found within 14 days. From standard autopsy reports, a quantitative method of assessing the degree of decomposition in four specific body organs and the total appearance of the body was collated into a total body score (tbs). The mathematical models on how to estimate time since death in the eastern states of Australia are covered in this valuable resource. Explores national statistical data concerning decomposed human bodies Presents Total Body Score (TBS) from standardized autopsy reports Includes research to prove the efficacy of a TBS from actual autopsies and actively decomposing bodies at a forensic research facility Presents a compilation of mathematical models to estimate the time since death in human bodies found decomposed indoors in the eastern states and the Northern Territory of Australia

Towards a More Accurate Estimation of the Time Since Death in Human Bodies Found Decomposed in Australian Conditions Book Review:

The fate of the human body after death is a subject that has fascinated enquirers, both religious and scientific, for millennia. However, objective research into the causes and nature of human decomposition has only taken place in the last two centuries and quantitative measurement of the process as a means of estimating the time since death has only recently been attempted. Most research has involved attempting to estimate the time since death (TSD) in the early period after death; from the moment of death until the body cools to ambient temperature. When this phase is past and the body begins to putrefy, the estimation of the time of death becomes increasingly more difficult. The primary aim of this thesis is to develop a practical and easily applicable method for estimating the time since death (TSD) in the first two weeks of the post-mortem interval. A substantive discussion of the literature on the TSD in the early (up to 48 hour) post-mortem interval and the putrefaction period through to skeletonisation will put into context the aims and methodology employed in this research. The chief methodological approach is retrospective, with the addition of practical and experimentally based observations to increase the accuracy of and test the statistical modelling of time since death. The experimental format followed included: (1) Accessing the Australian National Coroner's information System (NCIS); (2) Collating data on individual autopsies of persons who had died some time prior to discovery and in whom the time since death was known with reasonable certainty; (3) Developing a quantitative method of assessing the degree of decomposition in a number of specific body organs and from this data compiling a numerically summated total body score (TBS) for each individual; (4) Increasing the accuracy of this system by attending a series of autopsies at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine; (5) Further controlled research into human decomposition at the Forensic Anthropology Research Center ('body farm') of Texas State University in order to assess the role of temperature in the rate and process of decomposition; (6) Using the resultant dataset along with a range of environmental variables to develop a series of mathematical models to estimate time since death based on the degree of decomposition; (7) Testing the accuracy of the models both statistically and practically on a series of cases that were not involved in developing the time since death models. Models resulting from this work indicate that an accurate TSD in Australian indoor conditions can be estimated using the TBS independent of humidity and temperature variables.

Human Body Decomposition Book Review:

The fate of the human body after death is a subject that has fascinated enquirers, both in the scientific and legal realms for millennia. However, objective research into the causes and nature of human decomposition has only taken place in the last two centuries, and quantitative measurement of the process as a means of estimating the time of death has only recently been attempted. The substantial literature concerning this research has been published in numerous scientific journals since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Human Body Decomposition expands on the current literature to include the evolving research on estimating the time of death. This volume details the process of decomposition to include early period after death when the body cools to ambient temperature, and when the body begins to putrefy. This process is significant because the estimation of the time of death becomes increasingly more difficult when the body begins to putrefy. Human Body Decomposition compiles a chronological account of research into the estimation of the time since death in human bodies found decomposed in order that researchers in the subject field can concentrate their thoughts and build on what has been achieved in the past. Provides concise details of research, over the last 200 years, of estimating the time of death in decomposed bodies. Covers methods of research into human decomposition in the stages of body cooling to ambient temperature and the later stages of autolysis, putrefaction and skeletonisation. Includes a detailed account of recent research and future concepts. Concludes with an account of the difficulties which future research into human decomposition will encounter.

Veterinary Forensics Book Review:

Veterinary Forensics: Investigation, Evidence Collection, and Expert Testimony will provide anyone involved in an investigation of an animal involved crime or civil action with the knowledge and tools that can give guidance for their actions in completing a forensic investigation. All 50 U.S. states, and numerous countries around the world, have laws against animal abuse and cruelty. Law enforcement agents, veterinarians, the judiciary, attorneys and forensic scientists may be involved in cases of animal cruelty, neglect or human crimes that may have an animal element. Additionally, the animal can be the victim, suspect or in some instances the witness of a crime. Given that acquittal or conviction is dependent upon the nature and veracity of the evidence, the quality of the evidence in an animal-related crime investigation must be beyond reproach. The book begins with a discussion of animal abuse and crimes against animals, crime scene investigation, and, from there, discusses various types of forensic examinations of the animal, culminating in a review of the judicial system and testimony in a court of law. All contributing authors are practicing professionals in law, veterinary medicine, and the private sector who provide current, best-practice evidence collection and forensic techniques. Chapters provide in-depth detail about the forensic clinical examination and forensic necropsy of small and large animal species, forensic radiology, forensic toxicology, bitemark analysis and animal behavior. Various, relevant forensic disciplines such as bloodstain pattern analysis, DNA analysis, animal sexual abuse, agroterrorism, animal hoarding, ritual crimes against animals, and animal fighting are discussed. Key Features: Presents established and accepted police techniques in animal crime scene investigation including identification, documentation and packaging of physical evidence and scene photography and videography Includes essential techniques to collect and preserve biological and DNA evidence for animal DNA testing Review of the forensic clinical examination and forensic necropsy of small and large animals Provides methods of evidence presentation in the courtroom, the nature of court room testimony, and the development of an expert report Veterinary Forensics: Investigation, Evidence Collection, and Expert Testimony fills the void of applied, real-world investigative techniques for the collection and presentation of veterinary forensic medical and scientific information. It will be a welcome reference to both the student and professional in the understanding all relevant evidentiary, investigative, and legal elements of the discipline.

What Every Person Should Know About War Book Review:

Acclaimed New York Times journalist and author Chris Hedges offers a critical -- and fascinating -- lesson in the dangerous realities of our age: a stark look at the effects of war on combatants. Utterly lacking in rhetoric or dogma, this manual relies instead on bare fact, frank description, and a spare question-and-answer format. Hedges allows U.S. military documentation of the brutalizing physical and psychological consequences of combat to speak for itself. Hedges poses dozens of questions that young soldiers might ask about combat, and then answers them by quoting from medical and psychological studies. • What are my chances of being wounded or killed if we go to war? • What does it feel like to get shot? • What do artillery shells do to you? • What is the most painful way to get wounded? • Will I be afraid? • What could happen to me in a nuclear attack? • What does it feel like to kill someone? • Can I withstand torture? • What are the long-term consequences of combat stress? • What will happen to my body after I die? This profound and devastating portrayal of the horrors to which we subject our armed forces stands as a ringing indictment of the glorification of war and the concealment of its barbarity.
