Electronic Exchanges Book Review:

Anyone reading the business section of a newspaper lately knows that the financial exchanges--stock, bonds, FX, commodities, and so forth--are undergoing tremendous transformations. Fund managers, market makers, traders, exchange professionals, marekt data providers and analyzers, investors--anyone involved with the financial exchanges needs to understand the major forces pushing this transformation in order to position themselves and their institutions to the best advantage. In this book, veteran exchange expert Michael Gorham joins his twenty-five years of experience with CME and CBOT to the technical expertise of Nidhi Singh of Goldman Sachs to write a book that tells the story of this dramatic transformation. They chronicle the shift: --from floors to screens --from private clubs to public companies, and --from local and national to global competition. They analyze each of these shifts, identify the drivers behind them and look forward to the implications arising out of them for exchange business in the future. They also explore several key trends: --an increase in product innovation --the integration of markets from all over the world onto a single screen, --the rise of the modular exchange --the outsourcing of various exchange functions, and --the difficulty of transcending geography for regulatory purposes. So join Gorham and Singh in learning the story of this fundamental transformation. As old ways of working are being destroyed, entirely new types of jobs are being created, and new ways of working with exchanges. This book will help you chart the way forward to financial success. *Gorham is an exchange expert and Singh is an electronic trading expert, they combine their expertise to reveal the inner workings of the exchanges and where they will go in the future *Only book to point to new skills needed and new ways of making money for users of exchange services

Regulated Exchanges Book Review:

Since the inception of the World Federation of Exchanges in the 1960s, the competitive landscape for organized exchanges has radically mutated. Technology and globalization have allowed financial flows to move freely across borders, and burgeoning competition and lower regulatory barriers have spurred far-reaching transformations in the way securities are traded. Still, exchanges epitomize transparency in the price-formation process, informing investors and disseminating vital informationfor the functioning of financial markets. Further, they represent an important source of capital for nascent and established companies alike. During the recent crisis, exchanges have remained open and liquid in the face of extreme volatility and disruption in interbank and OTC markets. This fact has emphasized the trust investors place in regulated exchanges when confronted with uncertainty. Against this background, the World Federation of Exchanges has partnered with the Centre for European Policy Studies to produce a volume of essays to commemorate the WFE's 50th anniversary. The essays are organized into three parts. The first part of the volume is conceptual in nature, with original essays by academics on the historical contribution of exchanges to world's economic growth, exchanges' economic importance, and the regulatory characteristics of the space in which exchanges operate. The second part of the volume, written by practitioners, refers to some milestones in the history of exchanges, such as the birth of financial derivatives, the launch of electronic trading, the collapse of Communism and the emergence of new markets, and the conception of corporate social responsibility. These chapters show the interaction of the individuals founding the exchanges with their local cultures and their contemporary world financial markets. The third part of the volume is forward-looking. It takes a look at the competitive landscape and future prospects of regulated exchanges. In the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2007-09, rules and markets are changing rapidly, as both the public and investors demand greater transparency in the financial sector. Regulated Exchanges reflects upon the historical and present importance of exchanges in promoting economic growth and in forming prices for the correct functioning of market economies. It will give readers the opportunity to assess the role of regulated markets in the economy, the functioning of the financial sector, and the shape of regulation.

Logistics Engineering Handbook Book Review:

Achieving state-of-the-art excellence and attaining the cost reductions associated with outstanding logistics efforts is an obvious gain in terms of competitive edge and profitability. As logistics tools evolve in comprehensiveness and complexity, and the use of these new tools becomes more pervasive, maintaining a position of leadership in logistics functions also becomes increasingly difficult. And in spite of its importance not only to the bottom line but also to the functionality of your operations, logistics improvement often lags industry requirements. Taking a unique engineering approach, the Logistics Engineering Handbook provides comprehensive coverage of traditional methods and contemporary topics. The book delineates basic concepts and practices, provides a tutorial for common problems and solution techniques, and discusses current topics that define the state of the logistics market. It covers background information that defines engineering logistics, activities and implementation, transportation management, enabling technologies, and emerging trends. Each chapter includes either a brief case study overview of an industrially motivated problem or a tutorial using fabricated data designed to highlight important issues. Presentation, organization, and quality of content set this book a part. Its most distinctive feature is the engineering focus, instead of the more usual business/supply chain focus, that provides a mathematically rigorous treatment without being overly analytical. Another important characteristic is the emphasis on transportation management, especially freight transportation. The section on emerging and growing trends makes the handbook particularly useful to the savvy logistics professional wishing to exploit possible future trends in logistics practice. The handbook is a one-stop shopping location for logistics engineering reference materials ranging from basics to traditional problems, to state-of-the-market concerns and opportunities.

Electronic Collaboration in the Humanities Book Review:

This volume provides an informed view of how information technology is shaping the contemporary humanities. It specifically reflects five ideals: *humanities scholars with all levels of access are doing important work with technology; *humanities scholars' projects with technology reflect significant diversity, both across and within disciplinary bounds; *using information technology in the humanities is a continuous conversation; *information technology offers new options for humanities education; and *just as collaboration changes the nature of any project, so does information technology change the nature of collaboration--its speed, character, methods, and possible implementations. The first to explore new and important ways for humanities scholars to collaborate across disciplines via electronic media, this book redefines electronic collaboration; presents insightful models of student collaboration; provides important models of faculty collaboration with special emphasis on professional development; and offers a look at the future of electronic collaboration and the overall future of the humanities. Featuring the voices of humanities teacher-scholars at all stages of their professional careers, the chapters emphasize pedagogy, outlining contemporary issues and options. Electronic Collaboration in the Humanities speaks directly to anyone involved with interdisciplinary initiatives in colleges and universities, such as writing across the curriculum and communication across the curriculum programs, and to specific populations within the humanities, including literacy and technology, language and literature, literacy studies, professional writing, and English education.

Electronic Switching Book Review:

This book is a thorough study of electronic switching, covering all aspects of the problem. It was written by a group of experienced switching engineers working for France's National Telecommunications Research Center (CNET). After a substantial review of general telephony, the authors discuss connection functions and their realization through either space division or time division, signalling principles on subscriber lines and trunk lines, traffic, network planning and operation and maintenance. Equipment and software are described from a didactic and functional approach. Theoretical aspects are illustrated using examples borrowed from the most modern electronic switching systems.
