Retinal Microvascular Alterations Related to Diabetes Book Review:

Introduction: Fluorescein angiography has been so far the gold-standard test to assess diabetic macular ischemia (DMI), an important cause of visual impairment in diabetic patients. The aim of this study was to investigate foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and perifoveal microcirculation changes in eyes with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods: Cross-sectional study including eyes of diabetic patients affected with NPDR. All patients underwent medical history, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measurement, slit-lamp and fundus examination and multicolor, SD-OCT, Swept-Source OCT. OCTA, a new and non-invasive vascular imaging technique, was performed in order to assess macular superficial and deep capillary plexus in each included eye. Results: Fifty-eight eyes of 35 patients with a mean age of 61.8 with NPDR were included in this study. Among them, there was 19 eyes with mild NPDR, 24 eyes with moderate NPDR and 15 eyes with severe NPDR. There was a significant progression between NPDR stages for FAZ grade (p

Intravitreal Steroids Book Review:

This book explains how to use intravitreal steroids optimally in the management of patients with intraocular inflammation (uveitis) and macular edema. The rationale for this treatment approach is first explained by examining the pathophysiology of these disease entities, with particular attention to the major role of inflammatory processes. Devices for the delivery of steroids to the eye are discussed, and guidance provided on the role of imaging studies before, during, and after steroid therapy. The value of different steroidal approaches is then considered in detail. Other topics addressed include the use of steroids as a surgical adjunct and within a combination strategy. Uveitis and macular edema are common sight-threatening diseases or complications of diabetes and retinal vein occlusion for which no adequate treatment was available until recently. Both trainees and practitioners will find Intravitreal Steroids to be an invaluable aid in combating these blinding diseases.

Optical Coherence Tomography Book Review:

Because of its many advantages optical coherence tomography (OCT) has revolutionized the way in which retinal diseases are screened and managed and how treatments are monitored. In this volume the latest developments and findings are presented by experts in their respective fields. After a short introduction covering the available equipment and the basic techniques, the imaging features of various pathological findings in retinal diseases are presented. The topics cover the outer layers including new modalities for choroid imaging, out-layer diseases such as the various types of macular degeneration, retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and vascular occlusion, and retina and vitreous interface pathologies. The final chapters are dedicated to the practicality of using OCT for the pre- and postsurgical evaluation of the posterior segment and for the differential diagnosis of vitreoretinal diseases as well as in the management of patients with retinal and neuro-ophthalmological diseases. Making the essentials of the recently held ESASO course on OCT available in one volume, this publication is a must-read for experienced as well as trainee ophthalmologists who need to use OCT in their daily practice.

Early Events in Diabetic Retinopathy and Intervention Strategies Book Review:

The development of diabetic retinopathy is a long slow process affected by hyperglycemia, hypertension, lipid levels and genetics. It is expected that in 20 years' duration nearly all those with diabetes will exhibit diabetic retinopathy. In some patients, it will progress to blindness. While the number of individuals with diabetes increases, our current treatments are only effective at advanced levels of disease. Further, our screening methods to detect those needing treatment are currently not optimal. Early Events in Diabetic Retinopathy and Intervention Strategies covers topics addressing imaging processes currently available in the development of diabetic retinopathy screening. Potential biomarkers, that may be used to identify those at risk and illuminate the new pathways which lead to diabetic retinopathy, are expounded.
