Global Youth Book Review:

This innovative collection of studies by international youth researchers, critically addresses questions of ‘global’ youth, incorporating material from regions as diverse as Sydney, Tehran, Dakar and Manila, and advancing our knowledge about young people around the globe. Exploring specific local youth cultures whilst mediating global mass media and consumption trends, this book traces subaltern ‘youth landscapes’ and tells subaltern ‘youth stories’ previously invisible in predominantly western youth cultural studies and theorizing. The chapters here serve as a refutation of the colonialist discourse of cultural globalization. Showcasing previously unpublished youth research from outside the English-speaking world alongside the work of well-known researchers such as Huq and Holden, these accounts of youth cultural practices highlight much that is predictably different, but also a great deal of common ground. This book goes inside creative cultural formation of youth identities to critically examine the global in the local. Bringing together an internationally diverse group of researchers, who describe and analyze youth cultures throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania, this volume presents the first comprehensive review of global youth cultures, practices and identities, and as such is a valuable read for students and researchers of youth studies, cultural studies and sociology.

Panoramas Literarios Book Review:

Panoramas literarios: Amrica hispana, 2/e, contains engaging readings by key representative authors from Latin America. Readings reflect a broad chronological range (pre-Columbian times to the present), with a strong emphasis placed on modern and contemporary literature, and include writings by Hispanics in the United States. The selections represent all literary genres and important trends of each historical period. Significant works by women authors are featured, which encourages students to explore issues of gender, race, and social class. Panoramas literarios: Amrica hispana is designed to help students appreciate, analyze, and evaluate literature by recognizing the importance of literary analysis as well as historical-cultural context. Students develop their reading and analytical skills through a variety of pre-reading strategies and activities and engaging discussion questions that accompany each selection. New! More Latin American selections feature essays by Jos Carlos Maritegui, Octavio Paz, Gustavo Prez-Firmat, and Elena Poniatowska that expose students to the more subjective and personal perspective of each essayist as well as the common shared historical, political, economic, and social problems and issues of Latin America. New! Historical, cultural and literary events timeline summarizes, in chart form, the most important information contained in the Sinopsis histrico-literaria, helping students prepare for quizzes and exams. New! Subheadings for Sinopsis sections enable students to organize the content in significant informational units, while aiding them in developing their long-term learning and retention skills. Discussion and analysis themes provide numerous and varied topics for class discussions, oral presentations, written essays, or literary analysis and interpretation. Intertextual themes relating to more than one work of literature in the text foster critical-thinking skills through analysis of themes, voice, characterization, and other literary techniques or devices. Historic-literary sinopsis section provides students with the necessary background information for their study of literature by including a general overview of important literary currents and the historical context for the period covered in that section. Pre-reading strategies and activities offer information on the featured work, highlight major themes, discuss the author's writing techniques and style, and focus students' attention on important concepts or motifs.

Health Care and Government Policy Book Review:

Government policy refers primarily to the actions planned and implemented by the executive branch of a state to meet its society’s needs. One of the most demanding areas both for policy makers and in terms of people’s expectations is health, which social analysts and historians place among the most dynamic sectors over the last century. This is the focus of this book. It includes examinations of two of the most pressing issues facing national healthcare services today – ‘Health systems at the stage of complexity: the need for collaborative intelligence’ by Constantino Sakellarides et al. and ‘Longer and better lives: the European fountain of youth’ by Patrice Bourdelais – alongside historical analyses covering both earlier periods – ‘Not just one countryside: life chances in pre-industrial Sweden’ by Jan Sundin and ‘Health care and poor relief in Portugal: an historical perspective’ by Laurinda Abreu – and more recent times – ‘The roots of the health reform in Spain’ by Enrique Perdiguero-Gil e Josep M. Comelles. As the authors in this volume show in detail, population growth and increased quality of life have been among the greatest achievements of the second half of the twentieth century, but they should not be taken for granted. The fragility of these gains has been demonstrated statistically. The state has to invest in the public policies that best protect its citizens, particularly at times of low economic growth such as we are now experiencing, and take preventive action to preclude major social and economic costs. Civil society plays no less important a role in protecting the greater good of social cohesion. In short, both state and civil society need to consider future health policy in such a way as to overcome the inefficiencies of the past and make full use of the opportunities offered by science and technology to improve people’s quality of life.
