Confessions of the Fox Book Review:

A New York Times Editors' Choice: "A mind-bending romp through a gender-fluid, eighteenth century London . . . a joyous mash-up of literary genres shot through with queer theory and awash in sex, crime, and revolution." NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New Yorker * HuffPost * Kirkus Reviews * Shortlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize * "A dazzling tale of queer romance and resistance."--Time Jack Sheppard and Edgeworth Bess were the most notorious thieves, jailbreakers, and lovers of eighteenth-century London. Yet no one knows the true story; their confessions have never been found. Until now. Reeling from heartbreak, a scholar named Dr. Voth discovers a long-lost manuscript--a gender-defying exposé of Jack and Bess's adventures. Is Confessions of the Fox an authentic autobiography or a hoax? As Dr. Voth is drawn deeper into Jack and Bess's tale of underworld resistance and gender transformation, it becomes clear that their fates are intertwined--and only a miracle will save them all. Writing with the narrative mastery of Sarah Waters and the playful imagination of Nabokov, Jordy Rosenberg is an audacious storyteller of extraordinary talent. Praise for Confessions of the Fox "A cunning metafiction of vulpine versatility . . . an action-adventure tale with postmodern flourishes; an academic comedy spliced with period erotica; an intimate meditation on belonging."--Katy Waldman, The New Yorker "Confessions of the Fox is so goddamned good. Reading it was like an out-of-body experience. I want to run through the streets screaming about it. It should be in the personal canon of every queer and non-cis person. Read it."--Carmen Maria Machado, National Book Award finalist for Her Body and Other Parties "A hat tip to Moby-Dick . . . a running footnote hall of mirrors to rival Borges . . . one of the most trenchant calls for progressive action that I have read in a very long time."--The New York Times Book Review "An ambitious work of metafiction, a sexy queer love story . . . a bold first novel."--Entertainment Weekly

Augustine Book Review:

"This narrative of the first half of Augustine's life conjures the intellectual and social milieu of the late Roman Empire with a Proustian relish for detail." --New York Times In Augustine, celebrated historian Robin Lane Fox follows Augustine of Hippo on his journey to the writing of his Confessions. Unbaptized, Augustine indulged in a life of lust before finally confessing and converting. Lane Fox recounts Augustine's sexual sins, his time in an outlawed heretical sect, and his gradual return to spirituality. Magisterial and beautifully written, Augustine is the authoritative portrait of this colossal figure at his most thoughtful, vulnerable, and profound.

Critical Enthusiasm Book Review:

Critical Enthusiasm tracks the intertwined histories of religious radicalism and economic transformation in the long eighteenth century. Rosenberg situates the rhetoric of enthusiastic rapture in the context of the major institutional transformations of early modernity: the dispossession and plunder of the globe, the rise of finance, legal reform, and the administration of racialized labor.

She's my best friend's kid sister, and I had long ago vowed to keep away. But when she asks me to help make her dream man jealous at her work's annual weekend getaway, I just about lose my Sh$%. She might think she's the ugly duckling, and maybe I teased her too much when she wore pigtails. But Fu%$ I had to do something to hide my real feelings, because she's the hottest girl I know. If some douchebag is too stupid to see the swan, she shouldn't be with him. No, she should be with a guy like me, one who would worship her, bring her to life beneath my hands…my mouth. But I'm a player with a reputation, and she's off limits. Yeah, keeping my hands to myself is what I need to do. Then again, they don't call me Bad Boy Millionaire, because I'm…you know…good.

Confessions of a Bad Boy Professor Book Review:

She’s way too innocent for me and I know it—and I should leave it that. If I knew what was good for me I would. But fu%$ it. I rarely go with what’s good for me, which is why I’m sitting on a goddamn bar stool when I should be back at Penn State, grading papers. I don’t normally stay for a drink after a gig—and I really need to give this shit up—but tonight, I don’t know, there’s just something about the birthday girl that’s throwing me off. I should leave. I’m a psych professor, for Christ’s sakes. Ever hear of code of conduct? Yeah, well I’m violating every rule I promised to uphold—which is why I can’t act on my urges, right? 'So you think because you've watched TOWIE you've got us Essex Girls figured out? You don't know the half of it. Events in this book are so shameless that I've had to change all the names, but everything that happens is real.' Becci Fox is an Essex girl through and through. She just wants to be comfortable and spoilt, taken out to nice places and showered with presents. And she is. She lives in the grounds of her parents' manor house, drives a Mercedes SLK and had a boob job when she was nineteen. She's ambitious, working hard during the day as a bridal buyer. And at night she plays hard, clubbing at Sugar Hut and Faces, mixing with celebrities and soap stars. She knows how to handle the footballers who buy you Cristal champagne and make you feel like the most special person in the room (only they've got five other girls on speed dial). But when she falls for a sexy racing driver, is she finally out of her league? Becci shares six dramatic months in her life as she and her friends have fun, fall in love, handle heartache and betrayal, and even plan a big fat Essex wedding.

Fifty Shades of Black and White Book Review:

The life of a young nun in New England in the 1960s provides the backdrop for the provocative and highly relevant new novel Fifty Shades of Black and White: Confessions of a Naughty Nun. Eighteen-year-old Catherine Connor first enters the convent in September 1959. She begins her training as a postulant in Cumberland, Rhode Island. The story starts with her experiences in the novitiate and follows her as she takes her final vows. At the end of her postulant year, she becomes Sister Mary Irene Joseph. Her first mission after completing her education is to teach at a Catholic school in Fall River, Massachusetts. There she meets and falls in love with the young parish priest, Paul Kelly, who persistently pursues her. Catherine's experiences describe both convent life and her intimate love story, which is at times funny, sad, and melancholy. Fifty Shades of Black and White poses problems that the church is still struggling with today. Catherine's story is one you will never forget.

The Life and Death of Latisha King Book Review:

What can the killing of a transgender teen teach us about the violence of misreading gender identity as sexual identity? The Life and Death of Latisha King examines a single incident, the shooting of 15-year-old Latisha King by 14-year-old Brandon McInerney in their junior high school classroom in Oxnard, California in 2008. The press coverage of the shooting, as well as the criminal trial that followed, referred to Latisha, assigned male at birth, as Larry. Unpacking the consequences of representing the victim as Larry, a gay boy, instead of Latisha, a trans girl, Gayle Salamon draws on the resources of feminist phenomenology to analyze what happened in the school and at the trial that followed. In building on the phenomenological concepts of anonymity and comportment, Salamon considers how gender functions in the social world and the dangers of being denied anonymity as both a particularizing and dehumanizing act. Salamon offers close readings of the court transcript and the bodily gestures of the participants in the courtroom to illuminate the ways gender and race were both evoked in and expunged from the narrative of the killing. Across court documents and media coverage, Salamon sheds light on the relation between the speakable and unspeakable in the workings of the transphobic imaginary. Interdisciplinary in both scope and method, the book considers the violences visited upon gender-nonconforming bodies that are surveilled and othered, and the contemporary resonances of the Latisha King killing.

I’m the hard-ass president and CEO of a multimillion dollar company. I have rules and do things strictly by the book. Until sweet and innocent Holly crashes her car in a thunderstorm, and I take her to my cabin—my off limits sanctuary outside the city—for safety. She doesn’t know my true identity, doesn’t know my rules: sex is for pleasure, and relationships are out of the question. But when tension bubbles up between us, and nearly sets my cabin on fire, I’m suddenly conflicted. Breaking my rules are out of the question, especially after I find out who she really is. I need to end this. Now. Yeah, walking away is what I need to do. Then again, they don’t call me Bad Boy CEO, because I’m…you know…good.

Foxfire Book Review:

New York Times bestselling author Joyce Carol Oates’s strongest and most unsparing novel yet—an always engrossing, often shocking evocation of female rage, gallantry, and grit. The time is the 1950s. The place is a blue-collar town in upstate New York, where five high school girls join a gang dedicated to pride, power, and vengeance on a world that seems made to denigrate and destroy them. Here is the secret history of a sisterhood of blood, a haven from a world of male oppressors, marked by a liberating fury that burns too hot to last. Above all, it is the story of Legs Sadovsky, with her lean, on-the-edge, icy beauty, whose nerve, muscle, hate, and hurt make her the spark of Foxfire: its guiding spirit, its burning core. At once brutal and lyrical, this is a careening joyride of a novel—charged with outlaw energy and lit by intense emotion. Amid scenes of violence and vengeance lies this novel’s greatest power: the exquisite, astonishing rendering of the bonds that link the Foxfire girls together. Foxfire reaffirms Joyce Carol Oates’s place at the very summit of American writing.

Memoirs of a Fox Hunting Man Book Review:

This autobiographical novel of the eminent English poet, Siegfried Sassoon was first published in 1927. Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man is a fond reminiscence of boyhood and adolescence set against the background of the author’s rural English home. Full of the scent of leather and the huntsman cries on a frosty autumn morning, the scene is set as the world moves slowly towards war. Sassoon’s fluid, sensitive prose, the fine perceptions of the poet is spoken here in the voice of the average man, complete with charm and humor and quiet understatement. A thoroughly enjoyable and memorable read!

The Confessions of Frannie Langton Book Review:

All of London is abuzz with the scandalous case of Frannie Langton, accused of the brutal double murder of her employers, renowned scientist George Benham and his eccentric French wife, Marguerite. Crowds pack the courtroom, eagerly following every twist, while the newspapers print lurid theories about the killings and the mysterious woman being held in the Old Bailey. The testimonies against Frannie are damning. She is a seductress, a witch, a master manipulator, a whore. But Frannie claims she cannot recall what happened that fateful evening, even if remembering could save her life. She doesn’t know how she came to be covered in the victims’ blood. But she does have a tale to tell: a story of her childhood on a Jamaican plantation, her apprenticeship under a debauched scientist who stretched all bounds of ethics, and the events that brought her into the Benhams’ London home—and into a passionate and forbidden relationship. Though her testimony may seal her conviction, the truth will unmask the perpetrators of crimes far beyond murder and indict the whole of English society itself. The Confessions of Frannie Langton is a breathtaking debut: a murder mystery that travels across the Atlantic and through the darkest channels of history. A brilliant, searing depiction of race, class, and oppression that penetrates the skin and sears the soul, it is the story of a woman of her own making in a world that would see her unmade.

The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins Book Review:

A lively tale of “pitch-perfect suspense” set in eighteenth-century England—one of Publishers Weekly’s Top Ten Crime/Mystery Novels of the Year. Winner of the CWA Historical Dagger Award London, 1728. Tom Hawkins is headed to the gallows, accused of murder. Gentlemen don’t hang, and Tom will be damned if he’s the first—he is innocent, after all. It’s hard to say when Tom’s troubles began. He was happily living in sin with his beloved—though their neighbors weren’t happy about that. He probably shouldn’t have told London’s great criminal mastermind that he was in need of adventure. Nor should he have joined the king’s mistress in her fight against her vindictive husband. And he definitely shouldn’t have trusted the calculating Queen Caroline. She’s promised him a royal pardon if he holds his tongue, but there’s nothing more silent than a hanged man. Now Tom’s scrambling to save his life and protect those he loves. But as the noose tightens, his time is running out.
