The perfect book club read with a suspenseful bite—when it comes to their daughters' future, three women are about to discover if there are any lines not worth crossing... College admissions season at Seattle's Elliott Bay Academy is marked by glowing acceptances from top-tier institutions and students as impressive as their parents are ambitious. But when Stanford alerts the school it's allotting only one spot to EBA for their incoming class, three mothers discover the competition is more cutthroat than they could have imagined. Tech giant Alicia turns to her fortune and status to fight for her reluctant daughter's place at the top. Kelly, a Stanford alum, leverages her PTA influence and insider knowledge to bulldoze the path for her high-strung daughter. And Maren makes three: single, broke, and ill-equipped to battle the elite school community aligning to bring her superstar down. That's when, days before applications are due, one of the girls suffers a near-fatal accident, one that doesn't appear to be an accident at all. As the community spirals out of control, three women will have to decide what lines they're willing to cross to secure their daughters' futures...and keep buried the secrets that threaten to destroy far more than just college dreams. For readers of The Gifted School, Girls with Bright Futures combines the college admissions scandal with the edge of Big Little Lies, the snark of Class Mom, and the schadenfreude of watching the elite implode.

The first book to offer a proven, fast, inexpensive, and practical way to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prevent catastrophic climate change. As climate change quickly approaches a series of turning points that guarantee disastrous outcomes, a solution is hiding in plain sight. Several countries have already replaced fossil fuels with low-carbon energy sources, and done so rapidly, in one to two decades. By following their methods, we could decarbonize the global economy by midcentury, replacing fossil fuels even while world energy use continues to rise. But so far we have lacked the courage to really try. In this clear-sighted and compelling book, Joshua Goldstein and Staffan Qvist explain how clean energy quickly replaced fossil fuels in such places as Sweden, France, South Korea, and Ontario. Their people enjoyed prosperity and growing energy use in harmony with the natural environment. They didn't do this through personal sacrifice, nor through 100 percent renewables, but by using them in combination with an energy source the Swedes call käkraft, hundreds of times safer and cleaner than coal. Clearly written and beautifully illustrated, yet footnoted with extensive technical references, Goldstein and Qvist's book will provide a new touchstone in discussions of climate change. It could spark a shift in world energy policy that, in the words of Steven Pinker's foreword, literally saves the world.

A passionate defence of humanity and a work of radical optimism from the international bestselling author of Postcapitalism How do we preserve what makes us human in an age of uncertainty? Are we now just consumers shaped by market forces? A sequence of DNA? A collection of base instincts? Or will we soon be supplanted by algorithms and A.I. anyway? In Clear Bright Future, Paul Mason calls for a radical, impassioned defence of the human being, our universal rights and freedoms and our power to change the world around us. Ranging from economics to Big Data, from neuroscience to the culture wars, he draws from his on-the-ground reporting from mass protests in Istanbul to riots in Washington, as well as his own childhood in an English mining community, to show how the notion of humanity has become eroded as never before. In this book Paul Mason argues that we are still capable - through language, innovation and co-operation - of shaping our future. He offers a vision of humans as more than puppets, customers or cogs in a machine. This work of radical optimism asks: Do you want to be controlled? Or do you want something better?

The twentieth century bequeathed us a fabulous gift: thirty more years of life on average. Supersized life spans are going to radically alter society, and present an unprecedented opportunity to change our approach not only to old age but to all of life's stages. The ramifications are just beginning to dawn on us.... yet in the meantime, we keep thinking about, and planning for, life as it used to be lived. In A Long Bright Future, longevity and aging expert Laura Carstensen guides us into the new possibilities offered by a longer life. She debunks the myths and misconceptions about aging that stop us from adequately preparing for the future both as individuals and as a society: that growing older is associated with loneliness and unhappiness, and that only the genetically blessed live well and long. She then focuses on other important components of a long life, including finances, health, social relationships, Medicare and Social Security, challenging our preconceived notions of “old age” every step of the way.

Multiple sources were used to study the status of children in the District of Columbia, and recommendations for the improvement of their living conditions and opportunities are made based on these findings. The health and well-being of children in the U.S. capital lag behind the rest of the nation. One in 3 children in the District of Columbia lives in poverty, a rate 40% higher than the national average. The mortality rate for black infants places the District last among states and last among the nation's largest cities with measurable black infant death rates. More than 25 children a day are reported abused or neglected, and more than 5,000 juveniles were arrested in 1990. Every night, 1,300 children sleep in shelters across the city. Conditions have been worsening, and District officials have failed to use all available federal assistance to meet the needs of children and families. Recommendations for improvement of children's status are made in the areas of: (1) maternal and child health; (2) housing and homelessness; (3) the child welfare, mental health, and juvenile justice systems that can help vulnerable children; (4) family income; and (5) city management and budget practices. Suggestions are made for community action to help children, including the establishment of tutoring and mentoring programs. Civic and social, religious, and business organizations can all help, and all citizens must feel an obligation to place children higher on the political agenda. Appendices present information about District officials, volunteer opportunities, organizations that can help the District's children, and a list of 15 selected resources. (SLD)

Despite technological advances in new materials, design processes, artificial intelligence, 3D-printing, miniaturized electronics and design software, changes in the fashion industry and everyday apparel have not been as significant as we might expect. Should the fashion industry embrace any of these innovations, its system could change completely within only one or two seasons.00This book shows what the future of fashion could look like, according to designers, scientists, industry professionals and theorists in the fashion tech field. It unites their different perspectives on the challenges and explores alternatives to the plentitude of discarded garments buried in landmasses. Unfolding Fashion Tech: Pioneers of Bright Futures offers a hopeful vista for the future of fashion, textiles and technology.
