Energy produced from non-renewable matter like fossil fuels, for example, has been shown to increase environmental pollution compared to energy produced from renewable matter like biomass. Therefore, many countries are developing national energy strategies or policies that target the reduction of the high dependency on energy produced from fossil fuel and moving towards renewable energy that is produced from biomass which is bioenergy. This study explores the challenges of how a sustainable forest fuel biomass supply chain can be established in South Africa, to supply the required volumes of forest fuel biomass to multifuel biomass boiler organisations to produce bioenergy. This research study used a qualitative, exploratory and inductive research methods to gain insights into how this forest fuel biomass supply chain can be established. The data was collected through 12 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with farmers, biomass boiler operational stuff and forestry management personnel. The interviews were transcribed, coded and analysed to answer the research questions. The study confirmed that transparency and openness through the forest fuel biomass supply chain was imperative as it has been identified through the review of the literature, and risk management needed to be incorporated when establishing the supply chain. A framework is presented that would help with the establishment of the forest fuel biomass supply chain.

Biomass has competing uses, different kinds and origins which are potentially exploitable, poor geographic distributions for retrieving and transporting, and variations in physical and chemical properties. It is difficult to make informed decision for any biomass utilization project without having an optimal supply chain. This research intended to solve those issues by modeling and optimizing biomass supply chains for manufacturing energy, chemicals, and materials based on their respective processing routes. The aim was not only to focus on energy production from biomass but also to include chemicals and materials because of several factors such as an emerging cost competitive energy resource such as shale gas, highly volatile energy prices, and customer's preparedness and acceptances. Furthermore, it also could leverage biomass plantations on the producers' sides. The biomass supply chain model has considered annual profitability of producing products as the performance indicator. It was derived from revenues of selling the products subtracted all the associated costs such as biomass cost, transportation cost, production cost, and emission treatment costs from transportation and production activities. It summed up simultaneously all the profitable processing options that have existed in the superstructure to yield the optimal value, while a single ownership was assumed for the whole supply chain's facilities. Three optimization models have been developed and implemented in GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System).

The objective is simultaneous minimization of the expected annualized cost and the financial risk which is measured by conditional value-at-risk and downside risk. The model determines the optimal network design, technology selection, capital investment, production planning, and logistics management decisions. Multi-cut L-shaped decomposition approach is implemented to circumvent the computational burden of solving large scale problems. The proposed modeling framework and algorithm are illustrated through two case studies of hydrocarbon biorefinery supply chain for the State of Illinois.

Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.
