An Analysis of Parasitic Capacitances in Ioimpedance Spectroscopy and Their Impact on Impedance Measurements Book Review:

Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy techniques have long been used to investigate the frequency dependent electrical properties of biological tissues. Typically termed BioImpedance Spectroscopy, or BIS, these measurements are used in many medical and fitness-related applications. However, many of these measurements suffer from a "hook-artifact", or erroneous increase in reactance at high ($f>$ 500 kHz) frequencies. Existing work models this hook with a stray capacitance in parallel with an existing tissue circuit model. While this model certainly produces a hook artifact, it does not account for the presence of electrodes in the circuit model. This thesis expands on this model to include the impedance of the electrode/tissue interface expected in bioimpedance measurements and include an additional stray capacitance that may exist as a result. This thesis develops the circuit theory to describe the impacts of the electrode/tissue impedance and parasitics in this expanded model. This circuit theory is validated through both simulation and experimental results of the proposed circuit model. From the proposed model, a correction technique to reduce the hook artifact based on measuring both the applied and return currents in a bioimpedance test setup is proposed and explored in simulations

Human Body Composition Book Review:

This book is the compilation of papers presented at the International Symposium on In Vivo Body Composition Studies, held in Houston, Texas, November 10-12, 1992. The purpose of this conference was to report on the state-of-the-art techniques for in vivo body composition measurements and to present the most recent human data on normal body composition and changes during disease. This conference was the third in a series of meetings on body composition studies held in North America, and follows the successful meetings at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1986, and the one in Toronto in 1989. A large number of excellent research papers were offered for consideration at this Conference which demonstrates the rapid growth of the field in the last three years. However, we had to limit the presentations to approximately 90 papers which provided a broad spectrum of the applications and recent interest in the subject. The proceedings of the Brookhaven meeting "In Vivo Body Composition Studies", is published by The Institute of Physical Sciences in Medicine, London. The proceedings of the Toronto meeting "In Vivo Body Composition Studies" was published by Plenum Press in its basic life science series. Both these meetings placed more emphasis on technical aspects while the current Houston meeting tried to emphasize more the emerging clinical applications of these techniques. The general sessions used at the Conference for presentations forms the basis of the order of appearance of the papers in this book.

Tissue Characterization and Cancer Detection Based on Bioimpedance Spectroscopy Book Review:

Current research envisions improvement of breast cancer detection at early stages by adding a non-invasive modality, electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to the detection procedure. The accuracy of clinical breast examination (CBE) is highly dependent on the clinician's experience. EIS enhances the physician's diagnostics capabilities by providing supplementary diagnostic information. Performing CBE besides EIS effects the electrical measurements of soft tissue. In this research the effect of the applied compression during CBE on the electrical properties is studied in-vitro and in-vivo. EIS is also tested over healthy and tumorous subjects. The correlation between tissue electrical properties and tissue pathologies is identified by offering an analysis technique based on the Cole-Cole model. Additional classification and decision making algorithms is further developed for cancer detection. This research suggests that the sensitivity of tumor detection will increase when supplementary information from EIS as well as the built-in intelligence is provided to the physician.
