Basic Food Microbiology Book Review:

The second edition of Basic Food Microbiology follows the same general outline as the highly successful first edition. The text has been revised and updated to include as much as possible of the large body of infor mation published since the first edition appeared. Hence, foodborne ill ness now includes listeriosis as well as expanded information about Campylobacter jejuni. Among the suggestions for altering the text was to include flow sheets for food processes. The production of dairy products and beer is now depicted with flow diagrams. In 1954, Herrington made the following statement regarding a review article about lipase that he published in thejournal of Dairy Science: "Some may feel that too much has been omitted; an equal number may feel that too much has been included. So be it." The author is grateful to his family for allowing him to spend the time required for composing this text. He is especially indebted to his partner, Sally, who gave assistance in typing, editing, and proofreading the manuscript. The author also thanks all of those people who allowed the use of their information in the text, tables, and figures. Without this aid, the book would not have been possible. 1 General Aspects of Food BASIC NEEDS Our basic needs include air that contains an adequate amount of oxy· gen, water that is potable, edible food, and shelter. Food provides us with a source of energy needed for work and for various chemical reactions.

Essential Microbiology Book Review:

Essential Microbiology 2nd Edition is a fully revised comprehensive introductory text aimed at students taking a first course in the subject. It provides an ideal entry into the world of microorganisms, considering all aspects of their biology (structure, metabolism, genetics), and illustrates the remarkable diversity of microbial life by devoting a chapter to each of the main taxonomic groupings. The second part of the book introduces the reader to aspects of applied microbiology, exploring the involvement of microorganisms in areas as diverse as food and drink production, genetic engineering, global recycling systems and infectious disease. Essential Microbiology explains the key points of each topic but avoids overburdening the student with unnecessary detail. Now in full colour it makes extensive use of clear line diagrams to clarify sometimes difficult concepts or mechanisms. A companion web site includes further material including MCQs, enabling the student to assess their understanding of the main concepts that have been covered. This edition has been fully revised and updated to reflect the developments that have occurred in recent years and includes a completely new section devoted to medical microbiology. Students of any life science degree course will find this a concise and valuable introduction to microbiology.

Food Microbiology Book Review:

Yousef and Carlstrom’s Food Microbiology: A Laboratory Manual serves as a general laboratory manual for undergraduate and graduate students in food microbiology, as well as a training manual in analytical food microbiology. Focusing on basic skill-building throughout, the Manual provides a review of basic microbiological techniques–media preparation, aseptic techniques, dilution, plating, etc.–followed by analytical methods and advanced tests for food-bourne pathogens. The Manual includes a total of fourteen complete experiments. The first of the Manual’s four sections reviews basic microbiology techniques; the second contains exercises to evaluate the microbiota of various foods and enumerate indicator microorganisms. Both of the first two sections emphasize conventional cultural techniques. The third section focuses on procedures for detecting pathogens in food, offering students the opportunity to practice cultural, biochemical, immunoassay, and genetic methods. The final section discusses beneficial microorganisms and their role in food fermentations, concentrating on lactic acid bacteria and their bacteriocins. This comprehensive text also: - Focuses on detection and analysis of food-bourne pathogenic microorganisms like Escherichia coli 0157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella - Includes color photographs on a companion Web site in order to show students what their own petri plates or microscope slides should look like: http://class.fst.ohio-state.edu/fst636/fst636.htm - Explains techniques in an accessible manner, using flow charts and drawings - Employs a "building block" approach throughout, with each new chapter building upon skills from the previous chapter

Microbiology Book Review:

This loose-leaf, three-hole punched version of the textbook gives students the flexibility to take only what they need to class and add their own notes--all at an affordable price. For pre-nursing and allied health students (including mixed-majors courses). Building tomorrow's healthcare leaders Lourdes Norman-McKay wrote Microbiology: Basic and Clinical Principles to equip tomorrow's allied health professionals with necessary critical thinking skills. In the first and only introductory microbiology text developed from the ground up for allied health professionals, Norman-McKay teaches not only the fundamentals of microbiology, but also how to apply critical thinking to real-world healthcare scenarios. The author introduces her unique "S.M.A.R.T." problem-solving framework (Summarize known and unknown, Make connections, Avoid distractors, Read and re-read, Thoroughly answer) that helps students tackle clinical cases online and throughout the book. This textbook is the first on the market written to align with the American Society of Microbiology's Allied Health Learning Outcomes, featuring NCLEX/HESI/TEAS-style questions and emphasizing topics that are medically relevant. The author's conversational writing style employs accessible analogies and humor to engage students in their reading, while the artwork incorporates new research-based learning design principles to focus learners on what is truly important.
